Sullivan Strat No. 1 was spudded on April 11. A 16" conductor pipe was
cemented at 198'. After drilling to a depth of 810', 10 3/4" casing was ce-
mented at 798'. Drilling below the casing was commenced on April 21. The
formation was very soft and the drilling rate averaged less than one minute
per foot as shown by the Baroid Well Logging Service log. In the interval from
840' to the total depth 34 attempts were made to recover cores to obtain the
dip of the tormation, but only a few of the se attempts gave any information.
On IVlay2 the geologist at the well reported that a core at 3530' showed vertical
bedding and that he suspected that the well l1.ad been drilling in practically
vertical beds since a depth of 1618'. Consideration was given at that time to
terminate the drilling, but it was decided that it should be continued in order
to obtain information on methods for improving the reoovery of eo res and con-
trolling the quality or the drilliog mud.
At a depth of 4600' the well showed evidence that water was entering the
hole. At 4837' while coring, the bit became plugged and it was necessary to
pull the cirillpipe from the hole. The well then started flowing water which
stopped when the hole Þ:ridgeditself with sand. An attempt was made to drill
out the bridge and control the flow of water with heavy mud in order to run an
electric log. With a bit two subs and 28 singles in the hole the drillpipe
twisted off at approximately 8l0'leaving the bit, two subs and one tool joint
in the hole. vlhile attempting to recover this fish the water pressure blew the
drillpipe out of the hole and water ßlowed until the hole again bridged itself.
Since there was some evidence of weter leakage around the outside of the 16"
conductor pipe the field recommended plugging of the well without further attempts
to run an electric log. Verbal ap;Jroval was obtained from the Supervisor to ter-
minate the drilling and plug the well by placing a cement plug above a bridge
in the 10 3/4" casing. The plug was placed from 540-590'. The casing w:-,s then
perforated with six holes from 475-476' and 195 sacks of ce~~nt were squeezed
through the perforations leaving 10 feet of cement inside the casing above the
perfora tions.
Slight showings of gas were recorded by the B¿,roid mud logging unit throughout
the depth of the hole and a slight fluorescence was noted in some of the sarrlples.
Since no abrupt increase in the recorded volun~ of gas was noted and no evidence
of porosity was seen in any of the samples, it is believed that these showings
are of no significance. There is no reason to believe that any permeable beds
that might be productive of oil or gas are present below the 10 3/4" casing. The
final condition of the \.¡ell as plug¡:_~ed is a8 follows:
25 sacks spotted 5401 to 590'.
20 sacks spotted 5' to 45' (top of this plug later located at 481').
195 sa.cks squeezed through 6 perforations at 475-4761. 1000# bleak down
pressure - 800# ptullping pressure - no final build up.
5 sacks left in pipe above perforations.
50 sçcks spotted 5' to 1051.
No leakage aroW1d top of either string of casing after bOtt011 plug was spotl.ed.
No leakage during squeeze job.

"It was later found that the 'Proposed l1ethod of ExtendiDg the

pared by the Bureau of Land Ma.nagelL~nt at our requ.est, provided tha.t the

Leo H. Saarela, Regional Mining Supervisor

Subject:
Well samples, Sullivan Unit, Katalla-Yakataga Area
Attached is a copy of a letter from Phillips Petroleum Company
concerning the above subject.
I feel that we should collect samples from these wells both
for our information and other branches of the Geological Survey and
it v¡ould appear that your office is the logical place tó have them
sent. However, before advising Phillips Petrole~~ Company, would like
to l{DOW if you have room to store them and would be willing to take
care of the samples.
A prompt reply would be appreciated.

Dear :VII'. Snow:
Section 221.8 of the oil and gas operating regulations of
the United States Geological Survey provides "When deemed necessary
or advisable the Supervisor is authorized to re~uire that ade~uate
samples be taken and tests or surveys be made in an acceptable
manner without cost to the lessor to determine the identity and
character of formation ....".
We a:ve now drilling the second well in the Katalla-Yakataga
area and would like to be advised if the Geological Survey wishes to
have a set of w~ll cuttings and samples of cores. Ir so, we wo~d
appreciate being advised as to where these samples should be sent.
Since our storage space in the field is ~uite limited, we would like
to send such samples as you may re~uire from time to time rather than
await the compl~tion of a well.
,/'
Unless otherwise specified, these samples will be furnished
in paper envelopes stamped with the name of the well and depth at
which the sample was taken.

Dear ¥æ. Snow:
Reference is made to our applicatiorl dated January 8, 1954, for
a permit to drill the subject \'lell, and to telephone conversation between
/ you and ¡.'b:'. F. F. Lovering of our office. \ie are attaching a corrected
copy of our application to drill, Form No. 9-331A, in which we indicate
that 1611 casing was set at 1981 and 10-3/4" casing set at 7981 rather
than that sho~TI on our previous application. Also attached are other
forms pertinent to the drilling and abandonment of the well.
¡'Ie are indeed sorry that our original casing program was not
followed, but we feel sure that you realize we are faced with unusual
problems due to both the isolation of our properties and our l~ck of
knowledge regarding subsurface conditions in Alaska. ~~_or.rginal pro-
gram \"i"as changed by personnel at the drilling site without our previous
knowledge, and they no doubt felt that they were properly perforITáng their
duties in setting the amount of surface casing conditions warranted,
rather than follow the program established previous to operations. We
have, however, inaugurated a procedure of requiring field personnel di-
recting-drilling operations to adhere to our planned program in the-future.
Yours very truly,

Memorandum
From: Acting Oil and Gas Supervisor
Subject: - °lling operations
ge 011Z93
Mr. George Kitchel with Kerr-McGee Industries called today
and asked permission to abandon their well Sulliva.n Strat Ifl which was
drilled to a depth of approximately 5000 feet with 10" casing cemented
at 810 feet. Mr. Kitchel stated that a strong flow of water was
encountered near th~total depth of the well and they had been unable
to shut off the water ADd in attempting to place heavy weighting
materials in the hoJ:è some of the drill pipe was blovrD out vlith the
lower part hanging up at approximately ß59 feet. T'ney were unable
to recover all of the fish and left the bit and few feet of drill
collar assembly just below the 10" casing. The repo:cted bottom hole
pressure in the well was 2700 lbs. and according to-Mr. Kitchel was
500 lbs. higher than the average water pressure for that depth.
Mr. Kitchel was granted permission to proceed with the
abandonment by placing a cement plug as low as possible which would
probably be on the top of the fish and tq extend several ßeet up
inside the lOll casing; also that another cement plug will be placed
near the top of the 10" casing. It was further explained to lIæ.
Kitchel that if there is any doubt as to whether or not a satisfactory
cement job was obtained:on the 10" casing, that it would be perforated
and cement s~ueezed out through the perforations to give added pro-
- tection against possible washing out around the outside of the 1011
casing and with the_understanding that in the event the water does
work its way to the surface in the future that the company will shut
it off satisfactorily.

Mr. Frank Lo'",reri.ne; of the Phillj ps Petroleum Company ,called
this mornin~ from Bartlesville .\. Oklahoma, a,nd advised that it had been
necessary to make some, changes in the ca,sing program for Strate NOe 1.
He stated .that they had not been informed (~f this unt.il yesterday and
that there WèlS apparently some delays in advising them and he '¡'lished
to r~S~3Ure us that it was not an attempt to 8yade the Regulati.ons. He
stated th:J.t they had set and ,cemented 198 feet of 16'" surface casing
instead of the 400 feet provided on the Intention t6 Drill. Also,
t.hey' hàd s et_ 800 feet of lO~3/1~ It casi P-g 1'..11'ile the approved no tice
c311ed for 2500 feet. It was further po:inted out !,hat the program
furnished V,T,::; merely a guess and they wère satisfied tha.t the change
w~s npcessary as a result of conditions encountered, and that, they
would furnish us with a subsequent report giving the depth at which
the cas;ngw~s set and reasons for the change. I advised him we
a~)sumed there was justification for the change and that under the
conditions we would be lenient in the matter of submitting reports.

«Last fall the operators agreed on the :irst two wildcats
to be drilled on/the Johnston Creek anticline prospect. The
first test was to/be drilled on ,little River at a location in
the Northeat qu~rter of projected Section ¿OJ T22S, R21E, and the
second test on Big River in the Southeast quarter of projected
Section 18, T ¿2S, R22E. However, there has been considerable
difficulty in buiding the road which h&5 now reactrêd L1 ttle
Ritler but has ~ not been canpleted upstream, a distance of
about 1-1/2 miles, to the proposed location. Because of
consideré;ble delay it has now been -decided to reverse the
order of the tests, and the one on Big River will be drilled
first and is expected to be spudded before the middle of March.
