SUBJECT :
Abandonment Tazlina #1
It was proposed to drill Tazlina #1 to 9,000 feet. On October 22, Union request-
ed permission to abandon at 8,837 fee~, 163 feet short of the proposed depth.
In the absence of the Supervisor, permission was granted.
The company states that they found no oil and gas shows, encountered no water
sands, and no sand at all above 5,600 feet just claystone. Below 5,600 feet
there were a few 10-foot sand beds. In other words, no permeability reservoir
rocks were encountered, just some thin sands in a predominately shale section.
There was good Upper Cretaceous to 6,600 feet. 8,260 feet was the lowest core
taken. The rocks may have been Upper Jurassic (Shell) or Lower Cretaceous
(ðOcal). There was no change in lithology from the top to the bottom. There
'Was a change ìn dip at 7,000 feet. The dip was southeast above and southwest,
below. Perhaps an unconformity or a fault was enoountered at. this horizon. At
7,300 feet there were steep dips 400 to 650.1 From 8,000 feet down the shale
'Was badly fractured and they may be next to ~ fault zo~e.
The only age ccnfirmation comes from the fossils. Apparently there is debate
as to their age assignment. It would appear that they were in the Matanuska
formation and may have been in either the Nelchina (Lower Cretaceous or
Naknek formation (Upper Jurassìc) or even possibly Chinitna. This is not
known at the present time.

Tazlina Unit Area
On looking over the geological infoJ"Illation submitted, I would
like to point. out that. there is insufficient infoI"lJlation on the
geologic map.. Ther~~ are no seismic dips" i.e. no strike or dips
indieated seismic work. There is nothing to support the lines
that have dra\'lrl and. called the UclosiDg contour indicated by
seismic worku.
As we discussed, you ¡uight wish to explain this to Bradley if he
wants to go ahead with the unit application.

SUBJECT: Tazlina Unit Area
DATE: April 11, 1961
Branch of Oil and Gas Leasing received the application for this
unit January 9, 1961 and subsequently were asked by Haring Brad-
ley to withhold any action on the unit until he notified them.
MCB received the application from BOGO March 17, 1961. On look-
ing over the geological information submitted, I would like to
point out that there is insufficient information on the geologic
map. There are no seismic dips, i.e. no strike or dips indicated
by seismic Í'vork. There is nothing to support the lines that have
been drai,n.l and ,call~d the U closing contour indicated by seismic
Ìi'JorkH an'id' \'l"(h~ušs"êd this today: He will tell Bradley that there
is insufi'lcient information submitted when the opportunity arises.
The information given in the written part of the report is little
more than information already been published or available to any-
one. His cited source vms Bun. 1094. The following probable
stratigraphic column for the Tazlina Unit indicates:
