Stansberrey Pau~merican Petroleum Corp. Security Life Bldg. Denver, Colorado 80202 Dear ~,~. Stansberry: Me have no~ completed the potassium~rgon age dete~m~inations on several s~ples described in yo~z- letter of 15 July 1969. ~Ye were able to obtain age determina- tions on three of these samples and you will find these written reports enclosed. A sample from Mobil Great Basins #1 at a depth of 11,0~0' gave an age of 120 ~y. This is an early Cretaceous age, A ~rye' Small s~pie frOm the General Pet. Great Basins #2 well gave an apparent age of 96.3 .~aoyo We had anticipated separating a s~,ll se~uple of ~.~phibo!e for this analysis but we were unable to obtain enough for analysis. We finally chose to go s2~ead and analyze the ~,,hole robk s~ple in order' to provide you with some useful ~n~o~ation. In light' of o~r experience we would suggest that the age of 96.3 'moy is slightly young and that the rock is probably ~ore likelY to be about 120 ~,yo old as a result of a small ~ount of ~rgon loss from the feldspars. I trust these results will be sueful to you and that you will get in touch ~ith · ',~e' if you have ~my questions about any of them. As has been previously stated, no significant showings of oil or gas were encountered in these wells. Copies of the electric logs, sample logs, dipmeter results, core analysis results, and logs and histories are enclosed herewith. A structural interpretation of these data is presented in Plate II, Section A -A°. The following approximate stratigraphic correlations are suggested by an analysis of the data, particularly the electric and sample logs: CORRELPLTION POINT ",-'ELL NO. 1 "'ELL NO. 2 1. Base of Pliocene: -Miocene' 2213' 2460' 2. Approximate top of marina: tongue 3690' 3770' 3. Base of marine tongue 4234' 4330' JI. Base of intcrbcdded shalt `732' 5775' and porous sand section in Wt ll No. I. 5. Top of basi_ment cornplex 10975' 8780' -h- CONCLUSIONS I. The Bristol Bay Basin contains a substantial thickness of Tertiary sediments which are strikingly similar to those in the Cook Inlet Basin. 2. These Tertiary rocks are predominantly non -marine, but include one. marine tongue comprised of several hundred feet of fossil- ifcrous sand. The non -marine faci(-,s can be expected to inter - finger with a marine facics in the: direction of the Bering Sc-a . 3, The Bristol Bay Area is a logical place in which to explore for sedimentary wedges extending inland from the Bering Sea, Such wedges could b: contiguous with a nearly continuous marines secti )n ranging in age from the Tertiary Period to the: Paleozoic Era. t 4. Ni.ith,:r of the General Rtrol-_um wells app(-:ars to have been a co ne;lusive structural test. `^'ell No. 1 was located i;,ar thL axis of an anticline, but apparently was somewhat d,:,wn-plung` from th,: crest. Indieatiers are that 'P'11 No. 2 was loeat,_d on a humoclinal flank and should b,, r-gard,-d as b,-ing strictly a strati:;r,phic S. Tht: drilling of two wells by Gcnt:ral Petroleum Corporation was a constructive pntAiminary step to further exploration of the basin. It confirmed thee existence: of a structural basin containing strata favorable for accumulation of oil or gas. General Petroleum also has made available sufficient geophysical information to be a quid, in further work. 6. Inasmuch as the area is favorably located geographically with rt:spect to other possible competitive sources of oil or gas in Southern Alaska, it merits a comprehensive, program of geophysical exploration and drilling. CAL17CMNIA Subject Core, Mud and Cuttings Analysis General Petroleum, Great Basins No. 1 Well Wildcat Bristol Bay Area, Alaska Ai elzi(l mnurtvrt mud and cuttings analysis unit was prevent at the site urn Great Basins No. 1 well during drilling opera- tions between the depths of initial spud -in and 1 1 , 080 feet. Using izt.an- dard logging procedures for a three-man unit, the drilling fluid was checked continuously for hydrocarbon content and the drill cuttings were checked at regular intervals for gas and oil content and lithology. The multi -column chromatograph was employed for these determina- tions in addition to the hot-wire filaments. The results of these opera- tions are shown on the accompanying Grapholog with other pretinent information including drilling rate data, drilling fluid properties, for - mation tops, and a detailed lithological description. No shows of any significance were encountered in this well. The cored interval, 7227 to 7246 feet, verified that fluorescent and cut observed in some of the sandstone rnelnbers were corning from a black tar. When heated this would give a slight fluorescence to the cuttings. The gas .gas from the numerous coal members penetrated. These coal mem- ompanied by a marked increase in penetration fers mere usually acc rate The core arialysis data are presented in tabular form. Porosity and permeability determinations were made on all sand formations as an aid in determining reservoir properties of the formations.
