Asphalt is moderately soft, has blocky fracture, dull to shiny lustre and gives moderate to strong yellow -white cut fluorescence. Many of asphalt "inclusions" are 1/2"xl/16" lath -shaped fragments that look like carbonized wood, having a lineation parallel to length. They are generally oriented parallel to bedding but unoriented with respect to each other. One fresh surface had scattered small spots of semi -liquid moderate brown oil. At 11,685-11,686' there are 3 thin 1-3mm lenses to laminae of light olive gray clay with abundant inclusions of tiny (1/4-lmm) asphalt fragments. These laminae are generally parallel to other irregular very thin laminae of asphalt which are found singly or in groups at various intervals. Lamine of asphalt and clay generally parallel bedding but some follow fractures. Except for wood - like asphalt inclusions, asphalt and clay were probably introduced into sandstone after deposition. Several slickensided fractures in sandstone generally lined with ca cite and asphaltic material. Sandstone, greenish -gray, fine to very -fine grained, massive, tight clayey matrix, difficulty friable, hard (4-4-1/2) , generally well -sorted but scattered medium to coarse grains, difficult to distinguish grains from matrix. Greenish grains (probably chloritized mafic minerals, but possibly include some glauconite) comprise 10% + of clasts down to 12 , 102' and 0% to 2% thereafter. These grains are soft, spherical to irregular shaped, range from 1/4 to 2 mm in diameter and range in color from gray -green to pale green to dusky yellow green. Other grains are scattered muscovite, scattered bronze biotite, scattered white clay grains. One probable foramanifera, snail -like in form, lmm in diameter was seen. Several dark yellow -brown shell fragments and two large sections of thick laminated pelecypod-- probably an oyster, were found. At scattered intervals, there are thin (Imm +) irregular patches of light olive gray silty clay. Throughout core are scattered small fragments to patches of asphaltized (?) wood fragments similar to those of Core No. 1. Similar material fills some fractures at various angles to probable bedding. 1/2 of core divided vertically is highly calcareous between 12 , 106' and 12 , 106 -1/2' . No general stain or fluorescence was observed, but a slight to moderate cut fluorescence was obtained throughout the core. Slight golden fluorescence (believed not to be mineral fluorescence) was obtained in the interval 12 , .106' - 12 , 106-1/2' and 12, 111' to 12 , 111-1/2' . Moderate to good cut fluorescence was also observed in these intervals. A few scattered small :Mains of dark yellow -brown oil were occasionally seen in v,jrious parts of the core. A dip of 6-1/20 was obtained on one of the cl.iy laminae. It should be considered only fairly reliable. This fauna appears to me to be equivalent to the Zemorrian Blakeley of Washington. The only published material on the Blakeley is Rau's Willapa Valley section, however, he has a paper in the works now on the Type Blakeley of Washington. The fauna in these samples is least compared with the Type Blakeley. I have given species numbers to those forms not described in the literature awaiting a specific determination by Rau. He informed me of his plans to write this paper three years ago and this is one way of avoiding a taxonomy problem. Elphidium minutum and anomalina sp Rau restricts to the Blakeley in the Willapa River section. Elphidium sp 1 is the form we had seen in the Port Moller of Alaska. E op nides sp 1 and possibly Discorbis are forms I have seen only in the Type Blakeley of Washington. Elphidium is the dominant species in the samples from the well. Many of asphalt "inclusions"' are t/2"xl/16" lath-shaped fragments 'that look like carbonized wood, having a lineation parallel to length. They are generally oriented parallel to bedding but unoriented with respect to each other. ~ One fresh surfa'ce had scattered small spots of semi-liquid moderate brown oil. At 11,185-11,186' there are 3 thin 1-3mm lenses to laminae of light olive gray clay with abundant inclusions ,of tiny (1/4-1mm) asphalt fragments. These laminae are generally parallel to other irregular very thin laminae of. asphalt which are found singly or in groups at .varioUs. i~tervals. Lamina of asphalt and clay generally parallel bedding but some follow fractures. Except for wood-like asphalt inclusions, asphalt and clay were probably introduced into sandstone after deposition. Several slickensided fractures in sandstone generally lined with calcite and asphaltic material. Fractures measured dip at angles of 13°, 27.°, 29© and 30©. 1t',688-11,691, 3' Ctaystone to Clay. Shale, dark brown-gray, iocaily very slightly silty, homogeneous, very hard (5), angular fracture, some slight fissility, abundant tiny ~ near-spherical white grains--probably mainly microfauna. Sandstone, greenish-gray, fine to very-fine graihed, massive, tight clJyey matrix, difficulty friable, hard (4-4-1/2), generally, well-sorted but scattered medium to coarse grains, ~'~-ieult to distingu±sh §rains from matrLx Greenish grains (probably ch~loritized mafic minerals, but possibly include some glauconite) comprise 10%-+ of clasts dovrn to 12,102~ and 0% to 2% thereafter. These grains are soft~ .spherical to i~~re§ular shaped, range from 1/4 to 2~ in diameter and range .in color from gray-~reen to pale green to dusky yellow §teen. Other grains are scattered muscovite~ scattered bronze biotite~ scattered white clay grains. One probable foramanifera, snail-like in form~ l~m in diameter was seen. Several da~k yellow-brown s~ell fragments and two large sections of thick laminated pelecypod--probably an oyster, were found. At scattered intervals, there are thin (lmm.+) irregular patches of light olive gray silty clay. Throughout core are scattered small fraEments to patches of asphaltized(?) wood fraEments similar to those of 'Core No. 1. Similar material' fills some fractures at various angles to probable bedding. 1/2 of core divided vertically is highly calcareous between 12,106~ and 12~106-1/2~. No general stain or fluorescence was observed, but a slight to moderate cut fluore'scence was obtained throughout the core. Slight golden fluorescence (believed not to be mineral fluorescence) was obtained in the interval 12,106.'-- 12,106-1/2' and 12,111.' to 12 ,111-1/2' . Moderate to good cut fluorescence was also observed in these intervals. .A few scattered small stains of dark yellow~ brown oil were occasionally .seen in various parts of the core. A dip of 6-1/2° was obtained on one of the clay laminae. It should be considered only fairly reliable. , . The lighter colored rocks were probably originally in the range dacite to rhyolite, are composed predominantly of feldspar (-altered to clays)' and many have green pyroxene or amphibole phenocrysts.
