Alaska 99501-3509 Dear Tom: Unocal is continuing to evaluate the feasibility of reinstituting water injection on the Bruce platform. Injectivity tests were run on wells 5-86, 6-42 and 12-42 on April 20 and 21. Injection was established in all three wells at pressures well below the fracture pressure. All three wells maintained mechanical integrity during the tests, and no increase in casing pressure was observed during the test period. Well 6-42 took water at the lowest injection pressure. Final injection rates and pressures for the 3 wells were as follows: Br 6-42 Br 5-86 Br 12-42 14 GPM (480 BID) 15 GPM (514 BID) 15 GPM (514 BID) 2,400 psi 4,200 psi 5,000 psi Each of the three wells was tested for approximately 6 hours. A summary of the tests is attached. State form 404 for each of the wells is also included. While the tests confirmed that injection into the wells was possible, the fact that injection pressures continued to increase during the test, and the short term duration of the tests made it difficult to determine the long term injectivity of these wells. ,; iii- Based on the results of the test, Unocal requests permission to perform a six month injection ,;' test on wells 5-86 and 6-42. The purpose of the long term test is to determine the injection pressures to be expected under stabilized injection rates. This information will be used to size a permanent installation. Injection will be performed using produced water volumes. Current produced water volumes are approximately 140 BWPD. Injection will likely take place in a batch mode with produced water stored for one to two day periods and then injected. It is estimated that a test period of up to six months will be needed to ensure that injection rates and pressures are truly stabilized before sizing pumps. It is planned to perform state witnessed MIT's before moving ahead with the long term injection test. Attached is form 403 for each of the two wells planned for the test. ~.S ince. rely, fx \ ~Tt~! Alaska 99501-3509 Dear Tom: \\o/y 0 \q Unocal is proposing to evaluate the restart the waterflood on the Bruce platform. As the first step in the process, Unocal requests permission to perform an injectivity test on wells Br 5-86, Br 6-42, and Br 12-42. The purpose of the injectivity test is to determine if water can be pumped into the formation at reasonable pressures and rates. At no time will rates and pressures exceed the fracture gradient. The waterflood on the Bruce platform has been shut-in since 1986. Prior to performing the injectivity test, in-house MIT's will be performed on all the wells to confirm that they still have maintained well bore integrity. There will be no injection tests on wells that have not passed the MIT. An example procedure for the injectivity test is attached along with the form 404's for each of the wells. ~~ Steve Lambert cc: M IT book Well File SCÂJi'iNEÐ JUL 242005 i '~""~Baali ~ ~~ 3. The tubing, production casing and outer casing pressures were monitored and recorded for three (3) consecutive days. The production casing pressure was altered by 200 psi. Pressures were then monitored and recorded for an additional four (4) consecutive days. See attached data sheet and well schematic. It is clear from recent~ressure surveillance and testing that the Bruce 6-42 well has tubing/packer ~ integrity and therefore cannot have flow from the productive interval into the 9 5/8" casing. The water flood sys/tem on the Bruce Platform has been disassembled and we are not currently planning to resume further injection on this platform. Yours very truly, F. K. Marshall, Jr. Petroleum Suoervisor . Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Committee 3001 Porcupine Drive Anchorage, Alaska 99504 Dear Mr. Marshall: Mr. Floyd Krebi!l has told us that he visited with you on July 11 regarding the status of our water injection tests at Granite Point, and has referred Mr. Gilbreth's request for some additional information to this office. We attach a graph-which shows injection rates and pressures at Well 18742 No. 6 since the start of injection at this well on May $. Our Anchorage Area office will report our future injections monthly on your State Form P-13. You should receive a set of these reports covering all of our operations in the near futura. At Well No. 6, we have been injecting water at a rate of 1,000 to 1,500 barrels per day. We have performed two stimulation jobs - one using acid and one using a surfactant - in an effort to. increase the injection rate, because we are very doubtful that a satisfactory flood can be conducted if the average injection rate cannot be improved above that ;~nich we have seen so far at Well No. 6. Earlier this month, we ran tracer surveys and did some selective testing with a packer to determine the zones of fluid entry. It appears that only some of the sands open in Well No. 6 are taking water. We are currently working on the well - reperforating and selectively acidizing - in an attempt to improve the distribution of water into more sands andthereby increase the total injec- tion rate. This work is just now in progress. We will continue to keep you informed regarding our injection testing. Attachment Yours very truly, I',,'~ONTHS BY DAYS 46 2613 120 DIVISIONS ,~.r ~** us.*.. The well encountered formations productive of oil in the NE/4 of Section 129 Township 10 North, Range 12 West, S.M. and it is now being completed for production. ,Because of its location on structure, no unusual difficulty was encountered in drilling this well or in controlling the degree and direction of its deviation. All parts of the well bore which encountered productive formations area located more than 500 feet from the outer boundaries of the quarter section upon which the well is located. Granite Point A 18742 Well No. 4 is now drilling from the same Fcatform, It was intended to complete this''ell in the SE/4 SE/4 of Section 1, Township 10 North, Range 12 West,'S.M:, as the permitted well for this quarter section. " The well was intentionally deviated from the vertical to permit it to be completed on this quarter section. Due primarily to the location of the well bore on the structures more difficulty was encountered both in the drilling of the well and'in the controlling of the direction and degree of deviation than was anticipated. Drilling is still in progress on this well and the Operator is continuing to attempt to control deviation so that the distance of the well b,re from the quarter section line and from Well No, 3 on the quarter section tj the south will be progressively greater with depth. If this exception is not granted it will be necessary to abarc°don the well elmost in its entia ty and to attempt to drill a atibstitute well to 4 location which will comply with Rule 2061.1. This would n6sult in the drilling rf an unnecessary well, at a cost in excess of $1,00o900000, It would not result i;' y in(-r7e od reccovery of oil from any of the pools in which the well may be completed nor will it accomplish any useful conservation purpose. Two cases were run. In each case, a total of sic wells wow*e drilled in the area studied. In the first case, Well 18742.-4 was assured to be completed at the originally proposed location, but in tits second case it was assumed to be at the actual location. Otherwise, locations and estimated completion dates were identical for the two cases. Table 1 lists the ,location and estimated completion dates, as well as the estimated values of the reservoir properties used. For each case, the reservoir pressure at 400 points within the model were then calculated as discussed above for each of B different time intervals. An IBM System 360 computer was used for this _calculations. For values below 0.01, ,the exponential integral function was approximated Hess $ i Ei(-x) a.vn(x) +0,57722 where 0,57722 is'Euler's constant. For values above 10, the approximation ' I Ei(x) -x was used, and for intermediate values a t4b1e to I -up and interpolation routine was used, Otherwise the calculations re ordina . At the and of each time step, the average pressure in.the model area, and the average boundary pressure, were found, and a pressure distribution snap. printed. This procedure assumes an infinite reservoir, which is probably spot ve.2.i rl for Granite Point inasmuch as water influx in not expected to provide a sigtii. ficant source of reservoir energy. Thus, the actual' pressure drops for both cases are expected to be greater than those calculated for an infinite resew ir.
