The well was designed as a horizontal sidetrack from the Tyonek formation into the Hemlock Benches 1 though 5 of the parent wellbore SCU 321-9. Unfortunately after performing the sidetrack, overpressure was noted in the Tyonek formation which required weighting up the mud system to 12.0 ppg to control the well. As the reservoir pressures in the lower Tyonek and Hemlock was anticipated to be approximately 6.0 ppg EMW it was decided to set an intermediate liner in hopes of isolating this overpressure. After setting the 5" liner and drilling out, it was found that a mud weight of 11.1 ppg was required to control the well. It was thought that perhaps a channel behind the cemented 5" liner existed, so a cement squeeze was done on the shoe. The shoe squeeze was not effective in isolating the overpressure so it was assumed that the formation below the shoe was indeed overpressured. This abnormal formation pressure coupled with the risk of becoming differentially stuck in the Hemlock portion of the well if the original horizontal well course was attempted, resulted in a decision to complete the drilling of the well in a tangent course of approximately 32 degrees dropping to 24 degrees at TD. The well was completed as a 3-1/2" monobore completion on 26 August 1999. As you can see we were not able to meet our objective of ddlling the well to TD in one hole size. The unexpected high pressure zone encountered has made it necessary to set an intermediate 5" liner and ddll the remainder of the well with 4-1/8" hole. We plan on setting either a 3-1/2" FJ or 2-7/8" liner on reaching TD and then perforalJng afterwards with coil tubing conveyed guns. I will call you later today to answer any queslJons you may have and see what needs to be done fi.om a Sundry standpoint. I hereby certify that the foregoing is true and correct to the best of my knowledge: Signed /( _ Title: Drilling Manager Date: Form 10-404 Rev 06/15/88 SUBMIT IN DtJPLICATE',,~~:~~ Well Name Change From SCU 11-9 to SCU 21A-9 The well was designed as a horizontal sidetrack from the Tyonek formation into the Hemlock Benches 1 though 5 of the parent wellbore SCU 321-9. As a result of the well not reaching the horizontal objectives, only 575' of vertical section was realized rather than the 1579' originally programmed. As such the well reached TD in the NE ¼ of the NW quadrant of Section 9. (The well had been programmed to reach the NW ¼ of the NW quadrant of Section 9) Following the numbering system methodology traditionally used in the field this bottom hole location dictates a well number of21A-9. Union Oil Company of California (Unocal) by letter dated May 27, 1999, requested an exception to the well spacing provisions of 20 AAC 25.055(a)(4). The exception would allow drilling the Soldotna Creek Unit (SCU) # 11-9 gas well to a bottornhole location that is closer than 1500 feet to a section line. The Commission published notice of oppormnit3_' for public hearing in the Anchorage Daily News on May 29. 1999, pursuant to 20 AAC 25.540. 3. No protests to the application were received. FINDINGS: The SCU # 11-9 well will be drilled as a deviated hole from a surface location 530' from the north line (FNL), 1890' from the west line (FWL)of Section 9; T7N, R9W, Seward Meridian (SM) to a bottomhole location 148'FNL, 313'FWL. Section 9, T7N, R9W, SM. 2. Offset owner Cook Inlet Region, Inc. has been duly notified. 3. An exception to the well spacing provisions of 20 AAC 25.055(a)(4) is necessary to allow the drilling of this well. CONCLUSION: Granting a spacing exception to allow drilling of the SCU # 11-9 gas well will not result m waste nor jeopardize correlative rights. Conservation Order No... June 14. 1999 Page 2 NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS ORDERED: Unocal's application for exception to the well spacing provisions of 20 AAC 25.055 (a)(4) for the purpose of drilling the SCU # 11-9 is approved. DONE at Anchorage, Alaska and dated June 14, 1999. Robert N. Christenson, P. E., Chairman Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission Camill50echsli. Commissioner Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission AS 31.05.080 provides that within 20 days after receipt of written notice of the entry of an order, a person affected by it may file with the Commission an application Ibr rehearing, A request for rehearing must be received by 4:30 PM on the 23rd day following the date of the order, or next working da3' ifa holiday or weekend, to be timely filed. An affected person has 30 days from the date the Commission refuses the application or mails (or otherwise distributes) an order upon rehearing, both being the final order of the Commission. to appeal the decision to Superior Court. Where a request for reheating is denied by nonaclion of the Commission. the 30-day period for appeal to Superior Court runs from the date on which the request is deemed denied (i.e.. 10® day after the application for reheahn$ was filed). Hazard Section Application for Permit to Drill SCU #11-9 There are no known over-pressured intervals in the proposed drilling of SCU #11-9 from the KOP of 9400' MD/TVD to 11650'MD/10381'-I-VD. The indicated pressure from the Hemlock and G zone indicates a pore pressure of .22psi/ft for an equivalent mud weight of 4.3 ppg. The proposed mud program of 8.6 to 8.8 ppg mud density will be sufficient to control the reservoir pressure to 10381 q-VD Lost circulation is anticipated while drilling the well so extra attention will be directed towards good drilling practices including slow trips in/out of the hole, accurate monitoring of trips with a trip sheet and keeping the hole full by circulating over it during trips. Lost circulation will be treated initially with 10ppb liquid casing. Should losses become severe, a formulation of graded nut plug and calcium carbonate will also be utilized. Mud and Cuttings Disposal The mud from SCU #11-9 will be disposed in the mud disposal well, SCU #43- 4MD. The cuttings generated by drilling SCU#11-9 will be disposed in the solid waste facility at the Swanson River Field. Notice of Public Hearing STATE OF ALASKA Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission Re: Soldotna Creek Unit #11-9 Union Oil Company of California (Unocal) by letter dated May 27, 1999, has requested an exception to the provisions of 20 AAC 25.055(a)(4) for the drilling of a deviated gas well to an undefined gas pool within the Soldotna Creek Unit. The exception would allow Unocal to drill the Soldotna Creek Unit No. 11-9 well to a bottomhole location that is closer than 1500 feet to a section line. The well will be drilled as a deviated hole from a surface location 530' from the north line (FNL), 1890' from the west line (FWL), Section 9, T7N, R9W, Seward Meridian (SM) to a bottom hole location 148' FNL, 313' FWL, Section 9, T7N, R9W, SM.
