Wednesday July 30, 1975 ~ LOCATION INSPECTION - I departed Anchorage at l'O:l'5 AM in a state 'Ve~h~cle (Pord sta'[i-on~wa-gon) and drove toward the Little Bear location. The purpose of the trip was to check on the current status of the operation in general and to check on preparations for an up coming wellhead pressure test which is necessary prior to comnencement of drilling. Due to road conditions I was able to drive only about 1/2 mile on the access road to the well site. Since I could drive no further I parked the car and walked about l-l/2 miles to the well site. When I arrived I found that the operation had been delayed due to several problems. The previous day several of the operators vehiCles had been stuck on the access road. The cable tool drilling rig had been on location but had to be rigged down and used to pull out the stuck vehicles on the.-road. The water well used for supplying water for the drilling operations was pro- ducing at a very low rate and the operator predicted _an eight hour delay for filling the hole with water before a pressure test could be conducted. Chuck Sauve, the Little Bear Petroleum Corporation representative, arrived at the location shortly after I did and we discussed the procedure for the pressure test. Since nothing else could be done until the well was ready for the pressure test I caught a ride back to the state vehicle and returned to Anchorage arriving back at the office at 3:00 PM. Thursday July 3!, 1975 - BOPE TEST - The BOPE pressure test was witnessed by Lbnnie C. Smith. - See-Fi'eld Re~ort dated August 5, 1975. Thursday August 7, 1975 - LOCATION INSPECTION - Russell .Douglass and_ .I left the office' at 9:'3'0 AM 'and 'droVe' tO' 't~"'L'iti~le Bear locatien in my personal 4-Wheel drive truck. Chuck was not at the location when we arrived so we talked with the driller. The driller thought he had drilled through a cement retainer at approximately 1617 feet and showed us three coffee cups full of cement cuttings with what looked like small (sand grain size} pieces of metal. No rubber was recovered. After 30 minutes Chuck arrived and we looked at .the samples again. We told Chuck that the cuttings did not appear to be from a cement retal~. I asked Chuck to put up a well sign and gave him a copy of the Field Inspection RePort Lonnte had prepared on the BOPE 'pressure test dated July-31, 1975. ! also checked to see that bolt cutters were on the rig in the event it would be necessary to cut the drill line. The purpose of the trip was to witness the setting of a brtd~ plug on wtreline. At I:00 PM GO International rigged up and ran a junk basket and ga~e rt~ to 1850 feet with no problem. A cast iron bri~ plug was then ~ and set in the seven inch casing at 1820 feet. No collar log was available at the wallrstte SO the depths were wireltne measurement. The well had .been bailed dry .~ to ~ brt~ ptug and a two inch flare line had been Installed for ~sti~. GO International rigged up and ran a ~ Ray Neutron Collar log over the interval 1830 to 1300 feet. This log was then ~~lated with the o~ hole IE4) log and perforating depths were defined. The interval 1780 - 1783 {IES depth) was then perforated with II shots from a four i~h hollow steel carrier gun. Perforating was done at 4:45 After the perfoeattng gun was retrieved from the well the welt pressure was checked and found to be zero. The well press~ was obse~,~d for about 45 minu~s and it remained unchanged at zero. Chuck Sauve decided to wait at least 24 hours before further, testing so Russ and I left the location at 5:~ PM and returned to Anchorage at 7:10 O, K. Upon arrival at the well I fo~d ~uck Sauve and L~ Lovely looking at previous logs of the well and discussing perforating gun~ performance with Carlos Montgomery, the ~ Engineer. Lovely had ~ies of CBL logs run in both the 10-3/4 inch casing and the seven inch casing. After comparing all available logs. all present a~ t~t the perforating done the pe~tous day had been done exactly on depth. However, al ignnmnt of t~,~~ ~ strings of casing was such that casing collars of both strings of casing were exactly at the cen- ter of the interval perforated. Since the welt was still dead Sauve and Lovely decided that insufficient penetration was a possibility and they decided'to perforate again 3-I/2 feet lower in order to get away from the ~sing collars. GO International then rtgged up a gun and reperforated the interval 178~1/2 feet to 1786-1/2 (1ES depth) feet with 12 shots from a four inch hollow steel' carrier gun. After the perforating gun was. retrieved the well pressu~ was found to be zero. Sauve decided to wait 24 hours before further testing so I left the location at 2:00 PM and returned to the office at 4:15 PM. Chuck Sauve was checking the well pressure when I arrived. The well had a very small amount of pressure. A 1/4 inch ru~er hose was c~cted to a wing valve on the wellhead.. When the hose was i~eersed in a bucket of water gas or air would bubble through the water. 14hen the main valve was opened the well bled to zero in about 10 seconds. Chuck had decided to perforate the zone again with larger perforating charges in order to get maximum penetration. GO International then rigged up and perforated the tnterval 1781 to 1'784 feet (IES depth) with seven 80 gram glass jet charges on a 3-S/8 inch steel strip. After perforating the well was dead. Chuc'k decided to wait 24 hours before further testing so I left the location at Il:30 AM and returned to the office at 2:10 PM. The purpose of the trip was to witness placement of a cement plug for abanxionment. The approved program for cementing required 50 sacks of cement to be pumped into the casing in order to cover the perforated Intervals at !6~ - t669 feet and 1781 - 1784 feet. An additional ~5 foot cement pl~ would be placed at the top of the casing with the tnterval between ~t p!~ filled with .water. When we arrived on location we found Chuck ~dy to b~in mixi~ cement. A steel tank containing about lO0 gallons of water ~s to ~ used for mixi~ the cement. A small mud pump was connected to the tank so that the screened suction line took water (or cement slurry) f~ tl-~ bottom of the tank and the discharge from the pump was free to be used et~r .as a Jet for mixing in the tank or connected to the wing valve in order to pump c~-t into the well. Twenty-eight sacks of cement were d~d into the tank and the discharge from the pmep was used in order to mix the ~nt. ~ jet of water from the p~p was not strong enough to mix the cement. Finally after working the cement with a shovel and the discharge jet a very poor quality cement slurry was pumped down the well. Rather than continue the operation in this manner ~ and I ~ided to drive O. K. Gilbreth, Jr. Page 5 Ted Stagg - Field Trip Report Little Bear Corp. Beaver Lakes State No.. ThursdaY July 31, ]975 - Mr. Sauve called me at the office at 10:30 AM and indicated that he would be ready for a pressure test early in the afternoon and that I should meet one of his men at the mud bog-about one mile in on the lease road at 1:30 PM. I departed the office at ll:30 AM in the state vehicle and drove to the appointed meeting place, arriving at 1:30 PM sharp. One of the roustabouts working for Little Bear Petroleum was' waiting on the other side of the bog with a vehicle. I .walked across and he drove me to the location. We arrived at the location at 2:00 PM. Mr. Sauve and his driller and one other roustabout had just completed filling the well with water and we t~medtately commenced pressuring up the wellhead and casing .with the mud pump. We were only able to obtain 500 psig pressure with this pump so they commenced hand pumping the pressure with a small hand operated hydraulic pump. The use of this hand pump required pumping a quart of oil into the wellhead and then refilling the pump with another quart of oil and pumping that in. This produced only about 1.70 pstg pressure increase per hour of hand pumping operation so fr~n the time hand pumping commenced at/2:30 PM, it was 8:30 PM before we had obtained 1500 pstg pressure on-the wellhead. I observed this pressure with no. leakage for five minutes and approved the pressure test. This test was on the 7" casing with a piug at 1581 ', the casing head, a spool with 2-2, outlets, 2-2" plug valves, a manual adjustable choke and a 7" gate valve. I did not have a Fteld Inspection Report form with me so I departed the location with Mr. Sauve and his cr~w and drove back to Anchorage, arriving home at 11:00 .PM.. The next day I filled out a Field Inspection Report form (attached) and will send a copy to Mr. Sauve. I indicated on this form that there was no well sign on location and the flow line has not been installed. All other items, mostly related to the manifold pressure test, were satisfactory as was the general housekeeping on the location.. While waiting for the pressure build- up I had walked around the location and observed that previous drilling operators, either Lure Lovely or. Harbinger Oil, had left drilling lines and thread protectors off in the woods around the edge of the. location which had not been detected on previous inspections and clean-up of this location. Also this operator has reworked the location, from the stand-.~.int of moving alot of the dirt around and has uncovered some debris and drilling lines a~d pieces of material that had been buried. On this field trip I went to the Little Bear Petroleum Corp.'s Beaver Lake State No. 1-B and observed a successful pressure test of the wellhead, casing and BOP equipment that will be utilized to control any fi'ow during the drilling of this well. Friday August l, 1975 - In a brief meeting with the Conservation Committee, I discussed the operation and test at the well. After reviewing the safety aspects of this operation it was decided that a line cutting device capable of cutting the half inch drilling line would be available on the rig at all times should they not be able to get out of the hole with the tools. Cutting the line would allow closing of the BOP valve. Mr. Sauve will also be cautioned not to use a torch to cut this line. "Easy" Gilbreth Director Division of Oil & Gas Department of Natural Resources State of Alaska, 3001 Porcupine Dri ~v~~~~ ~ Anchorage, Alaska 99504 Re: Continuation of Operations (Beaver Lakes, State NO. lB) Dear Mr. Gilbreth: CORPORATION As you will recall in the May 14, 1975, letter to you concerning the re-entry of the Beaver Lakes State No. lB, we encountered what we believed to be a Haliberton E-Z Retainer approximately 270' up hole from its reported. location, which rendered continued operation with the equipment we had unsafe and environmentally dangerous (breakup was beginning to deteriorate roadway). It was therefore decided to move off until a new plan could be worked out, proper equipment secured, and an all weather road constructed to eliminate the necessity of only winter operations. The new engineering plan is now ready, all equipment needed has been secured, and t~e roadwork is due to be completed on or about July-t~3~ 1975. It is our intention to resume drilling operations (re-entry) on or before the 2~-th day of July, 1975. Prior to anyone--, we will notify your department at least one (1) day in advance, so that you may have a representative present. Attached you will find the revised Prognosis for Re-entry and an explanation of the equipment to be used. If there is an equipment substitute to be made, that substitute will be equal to or surpass requirements. We hope this will satisfy the requirements of your depart- ment. As you are aware, all drilling activity in the Beaver Lakes unit have been winter operations and therefore the roadway into the drill site was an ice road. After due consideration, we have determined that this is terribly restrictive to developmental operations. Therefore, we have decided to make a road way into the drilling area suitable for year round travel, (with the possible exception of "Break-up" in the spring when most all roadways are restricted to travel). The July 1, 1975' date to begin road preparations, leaves adequate time to make a suitable roadway before a 'drilling rig can be moved in and to complete the re-entry operations. The availability of small drilling rigs capable of doing the job we need' and at the same time in good condition, is almost nil, this time of year the drilling rig that we have selected that meets our needs and standards, will not be available until about the s~con~~ week in July. . We hope you will understand, that we need a rig which will render a safe operation and can bring this operation to a conclusion in the least possible time, Very truly yours, LITTLE BEAR PETROLEUM CORPORATION .,,'~ ,- /. //' .' Smith Petrole~ Engi~r ' May 14, 1975 Witness BOrE Installation Well Test and Equipment on Little Bear's Beaver Lake State No. 1-B _deednes.~,,ry April 30, 1975 - I departed Anchorage by a state vehicle arriving Signated-meei;ing place at mile 56 on the Talkeetna Highway at 7:40 AM.. I waited 25 minutes and no one showed up so I decided to attempt driving into the location on the ice road. I finally arrived at the location at 8:25 AM after drowning the engine out several times in deep water holes. At the location I met Little .Bear manager and operator Chuck Sauve who informed me that there had been work delays and he had attempted unsuccess- fully to contact me to delay my trip since he estimated it would be 3:00 PM before ~he could be ready to test. Due to the bad road conditions and the time required to make a round trip to Anchorage, I elected to stay on location. ~rough out the day progress of the well work deteriorated and the crew was unable to clean out the casing to. the proposed perforating depth. Alternate spudding and bailing continued until late in the afternoon and they had reached a total depth of only 1560 feet. At this point consenus opinion was that, in vie~ of the slow progress, it would be about lO:O0 PM to 12:00 midnight before any perforating could be initiated. Due to the conditions and personnel involved in this operation, I suggested it might be hazardous to perforate after dark. All agreed that it would be better to wait till the 'r~xt morning before perforating. The .perforating crew, well tester and I d'ec~de~:~ to leave the location and return the next morning when we were Called. Chuck indicated he would try to be ready and call me some time in the range of 3:00 or 4:00 AM by relay message via the M-W Drilling radio. Chuck drove his four wheel drive vehicle ahead of me over the badly deterio- rated ice road. I was able to make it back out to the highway, even though some of the water holes were deeper with melt water. I returned to Anchorage, arriving home at 9:30 T~h~rsday May l, 1975 - ~ received no calls from Chuck so at 6:00 AM I contacted ~i~'-Drilling "Company- an the answering service informed me that there would be no one available on the radio until 8:00 AM, In view of the early start that Chuck wanted to make I knew that if I waited till 8:00 AM to check with him it would be lO:O0 AR before I could be on location, so I elected to drive back to the location and arrived at the highway turn-off at 8:00 AM. There was an M-W Drilling truck with a radio parked at the highway so I utilized the radio on the truck and finally at 9:00 AM I was able to contact Chuck and found out no progress had been made all night and the crew had changed tools and were then ready to commence drilling again and that he would contact me when they reached the proper depth. I returned to Anchorage around 11: O0 AM. O.K. Gilbre~, ~r. Friday May 2, 1975 - When I arrived home at 5:30 PM I had received a call 'ff-~~k'a~l:~5-.~'o~ PM. The ~ssage he left indicated he could foresee no perforati ng before Sa tu~ay morni rig. Saturday May 3~ 1975 - Saturday morning at lO:O0 AM Mr. Sauve called and '~l-~t~'~'~ss~ ~they still could not get the hole deepened and that it would not be ready to perforate or test before Sunday and possibly Monday. Sund~ I did not rceive a progress report. nday May 5, 1975 - I called. Little Bear's office (8:30 AM) and left word f! ~J--S~uve'~' give us a progress report. Since no report was received from Mr. Sauve, I contacted M-W Drilling and learned that the crew was to go to t~ well at 9:00 AM to rig down and move the rig out. At 2:15 PM I called M-W Drilling again and obtained a report over the radio from Chuck indicating that he thought they were on the cement retainer which appeared to be at l~O' instead of lB10' where it was suppose to be (250 feet high). He planned to shut down the re-entry work and suspend operations until drier weather when he could, get a rotary drilling rig on the location. I left word for him t~ call in and give us a first hand report when he departed the location. I kept Pedro ~nton infornmd of the progress reports as noted above. Tuesday May 6, 1975 - Chuck Sauve called Hoyle and confirmed that he had mowe~ :~h6"'~a6i~OO1 rig off the location and had reinstalled the P & A marker on the well casing. He stated he thought the cement retainer was 270' higher than reported by the previous operator. Chuck also indicated that he planned to complete the re-entry work after it dried up enough to move a small rotary drilling rig (78,000 #) onto the location. Wednesda~ May 7, 1975 - Hoyle called Little Bear Petroleum's office and ~'i:ked Wi~h Bi~l":~~nd, requesting that Chuck Sauve submit a P-3 report reflecting the change in status at the well and a revised plan of operation. Monday_ May 12, 1975 - Mr. Sauve called in response to Hoyle's request and after~dfsc~si'ng E-he P-3 requirements assured Hoyle that he would submit the form as requested. On this field trip I monitored the field operations of Little Bear Petroleum Corp.'s re-entry of Beaver Lakes State No. 1-B. Gilbreth, Jr. Department of Natural Resources Division of Oil and Gas 3001 Porcupine Drive Anchorage, Alaska 99501 Dear Mr. Gilbreth; 99509 DIVISION OF OiL ]INl) {;AS On April 30, 1975 at an approximate depth of 1,546' the drilling crew encountered something solid, while in the process of bailing the well dry of mud and water. By 4:30 P.M., that day no progress was being made. On May the 1st at approximately 10-30 A.M., at a depth of 1,550' a core sample was taken. The sample proved to be cement although according to 'the aband- onment repbrt-filed by Ken Willits of Drilling Services Inc.., on behalf of Harbinger Oil Corporation.on Hay 21,. 1974, we should not have encountered cement until approximately 1,790'.--~At 12'15 P.H., that same day we rigged up and. drilled away at the. plug in the hope that only the plug was set in the wrong place. By 3'00 P.M., on the Third of.May at a depth of 1,581' approximately, the driller encountered something very hand which was bending the~.chizet"~bit~he~-had~:riggedL.. The damaged area 'indicated that we had run into the Haliburton Easy SU Retainer..(Bits and mud samples are being analyzed for metal'residue to varify this susp'icion).. If this is the retainer and if only 35 .sack'of cement were miXed, with 25 sacks below retainer, and 10 sacks above retainer then, there is Open perferations at 1,846'-1~856'. Therefore, we could not take a chance on penetrating any further without a rig capable .of a proper BOP stack and mud equipment. In the interest of safety, and environmental consideration (the road was getting very soft, and probably would not support.the weight of a heavier rio until it dryed out a b~t), we suspended drilling at approximately 5:15 Pi'M., on the Third day.of May,'1975. The well..was prepared for suspension by pouring 3 barrels of water on the top of the suspected retainer, Ceplacing the monument and thout a no tack welding it in'4 places, to'insure, it's non~remova~ w! ~,~eldi torch. By 9:30 P.H,.~ on the 5th day of May, 1976, all equ~pment~was move~ off the drill site. It.is our intention to move i-n a rotary rig capable of mud equipment and BOPE, as soon as the road has dried enough to support the weight of the heavier rig. If the present drying trend continues, we should be able resume operations by mid June or early JUly. There is one bog that will orobably ha~e to be graveled (approximately 300 yards, and another short one that will probably take 100 yards and possibly a culvert). In so doing with proper grading we should have an all weather'road for year round operations, but limited weight and traffic during spring break-up. This revised plan is subject to change depending upon scientific and technical findings.
