Well Prudhoe Bay Unit OS-lOB Prudhoe Bay Field, Prudhoe Oil Pool AOGCC Permit 196-150 Requested Action: BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. (BPXA) proposes to plug the existing well to prepare it for sidetracking. Recommendation: I recommend approval of BPXA's request. Discussion: Well 05-10B was originally drilled and completed in September 1996. The well has produced on a very infrequent basis since that time. Production, if it occurs at all, is usually for only a few days per month. The well has produced a total of 215 mbo and 6.2 bcfg since start up. Recent production, when the well has been allowed to flow for more than just a day or two, has ranged from 400 to 800 bopd with GORs in the range of 50,000 to 65,000 scf/stb. It is difficult to draw any conclusions about production trends since the well is not routinely producing, but there appears to be a general trend towards decreasing oil production rates and increasing GOR. BPXA's application cites a high GOR that makes the well non-competitive with other producing wells as a primary reason for their proposal. When compared to the overall pad production, approximately 10,000 bopd at a GOR of 40,000 scf/stb, well 05-10B is indeed producing at a high GOR. BPXA's proposal is to abandon the existing Zone 1 wellbore and drill a new horizontal completion in Zone 1 A to better capture the remaining reserves in this portion of the pool. Conclusion: The 05-10B well is providing minil1lal benefit to depletion of the Prudhoe Oil Pool due to its high GOR and infrequent production. Abandoning the existing wellbore to allow a new sidetrack to target additional reserves is a prudent operational step.
