WALAKPA WELL NO. 7
Prepared by: Richard Glenn, Geologist
for the
North Slope Borough
Barrow Gas Field Development Project
Barrow, Alaska 99723
June, 1992
INTRODUCTION
Walakpa No. 7 was the seventh well drilled in the Walakpa Gas Field Development
Program, and was spudded on March 11, 1992. This two-year development program, was
designed to drill four wells and one workover during the 1990-1991 winter drilling season, and
up to four wells during the 1991-1992 winter drilling season. The field is located about 18 miles
southwest of Barrow, Alaska, and was accessible by an ice road connecting with the Barrow Gas
Field road.
The Walakpa No. 7 well is located 1274 feet from the north line and 1025 feet from the
east line of Section 23, Township 20 North, Range 20 West, Umiat Meridian, Alaska. Alaska
State Plane coordinates are x = 613,486 and y = 6,244, 134, Zone 6. The Kelly Bushing
elevation of this well is 48.39 feet above sea level. All depth measurements are in reference to
this datum unless otherwise specified.
Walakpa No. 7 was the furthest northwest stepout well in the Walakpa Development
Program. This well was drilled about 2.2 miles west of Walakpa No. 4, which tested gas in the
Lower Cretaceous (Neocomian) Walakpa Sandstone. Based on seismic and well data correlation,
the No. 7 well was interpreted to encounter the Walakpa Sandstone at a structurally intermediate
level, between Walakpa Nos. 3 and No. 4.
The objectives of the Walakpa No. 7 well were to test and develop the Walakpa
Sandstone. The prognosis depth of the Walakpa Sandstone was 2,270 feet. The productive zone
was forecast to be 25 feet thick.
Walakpa No. 7 was spudded on March 11, 1992, and was drilled to a total depth of
2425'. On April 9, 1992, the well was completed as a gas well with perforations of 12 shots
per foot in the Walakpa Sandstone from 2260' to 2290'. The well is presently shut in awaiting
pipeline facilities.
The Department of Industrial Development of the North Slope Borough supervised and
directed the drilling and support operations for this well through their Barrow Gas Field
Development Project. All engineering and drilling operations were managed by Allen and
Crouch, Petroleum Engineers. Geological matters were supervised by ASCG, Incorporated.
Jade Drilling Company, Ltd. was the drilling contractor.

Cuttings sample intervals and lithologic descriptions focused on the Walakpa Sandstone,
the objective formation of this well. In Walakpa No. 7, the Walakpa Sandstone consists of
brown, fine grained, moderately sorted sandstone. Sandstone grains are predominantly clear
quartz. Accessory grains include carbonaceous (wood?) fragments, pyrite, shell fragments,
bentonite, and glauconite.
The gamma ray log of the No. 7 well indicates sandstone from 2258' to 2289'. Log
porosities of the sandstone interval average 25 %. Density porosity logs are greater than 18 %
from 2260' to 2286'. Formation density and neutron porosity logs show continuous crossover
from 2261' to 2284'. The lowermost four feet of the sandstone interval is interpreted to be tight
and non-productive.
In general, resistivity of the Walakpa Sandstone is relatively uniform throughout the
zone. The upper eight feet of the sandstone interval is a zone of higher resistivity, with a
maximum deep resistivity of 85 ohm-m, the remainder of the interval averages about 30 ohm-
m.
Three half-foot intervals, at 2280', 2284' and 2287' show high shallow resistivity
readings, and are interpreted to be tight zones of increased cementation.
The Walakpa Sandstone in Walakpa No. 7 has a gross pay thickness of 29 feet. Log
analysis indicates a net pay sand of 25 feet.

STRUCTURE
Introduction
The Walakpa Sandstone reservoir is located on the south side of the Barrow structural
high, often referred to as the "Barrow high". This subsurface high marks the northern edge of
the Colville Basin which trends northwest from Prudhoe Bay extending through Barrow and on
into the Chukchi Sea. In general, strata on the south side of the Barrow high are south-dipping
and relatively unfaulted. In the Walakpa Gas Field area, strata dip to the south at about 2
degrees.
Walakpa Nos. 1 and 2 were drilled on this regional south-dipping structure by the
Husky/ONPRA in 1978 and 1981, respectively. Both of these wells encountered the gas-bearing
Lower Cretaceous Walakpa Sandstone, and identified a minimum gas column of 550 feet if
reservoir continuity is assumed.
The 1991 North Slope Borough drilling program followed a progressive step-out, both
laterally and updip, from Walakpa No. 2. Of the two original Walakpa wells, Walakpa No. 2
showed the most favorable conditions in the Walakpa Sandstone. The 1992 drilling season
involved stepout drilling to the west, on 640-acre spacing, to test the lateral continuity of the
Walakpa Sandstone reservoir.
Structural Position
Walakpa No. 7 is nearly equidistant from the Walakpa Nos. 3 and 4 wells, located about
two miles to the southeast and northeast, respectively. Structurally, the No. 7 well is at an
intermediate level, approximately 90 feet downdip from Walakpa No. 4, and 115 feet updip
from Walakpa No. 3.
Walakpa No. 7 well was drilled to confirm the lateral continuity of the gas-beating
Walakpa Sandstone in the northwestern end of the development area. The well is also located
near a structural inflection interpreted from seismic data, where dips change from predominantly
south-dipping (as in much of the development area) to southwest-dipping. The well was situated
downdip of the Walakpa No. 4 well to encounter potentially warmer reservoir temperatures, yet
high enough to maximize gas recovery.
Drilling of the No. 7 well confirmed the northwestward continuity of the Walakpa
sandstone reservoir.

HYDROCARBON SHOWS
This well was drilled without the services of a commercial mud logging unit. Therefore,
no hydrocarbon shows above the Walakpa Sandstone in the mud or the cuttings were recorded.
The cuttings from the Walakpa Sandstone gave off pale to bright yellow fluorescence under
ultraviolet light.
PRODUCTIVE ZONES
The gamma ray log of the Walakpa No. 7 well indicates good sandstone development in
the Walakpa Sandstone from 2259' to 2288'. Formation density/neutron porosity logs indicate
gas-bearing porous sandstone from 2259' to 2286'. The lowermost two feet of the Walakpa
Sandstone is interpreted to be tight and non-productive. Continuous perforations covered the
following interval:
KB DEPTH
2260'-2290'
NET THICKNESS

No other productive zones were encountered in this well.
CONCLUSIONS
The objective formation of Walakpa No. 7, the Walakpa Sandstone of the Lower
Cretaceous (Neocomian) "pebble shale", was encountered at 2259'. This formation was found
to be gas-bearing, and Walakpa No. 7 was completed as a gas well with perforations of 12 shots
per foot from 2260' to 2290'. No other productive zones were encountered in this well.
Walakpa No. 7 confirmed the northwestward continuity of the gas-beating Walakpa Sandstone.
At Walakpa No. 7 the Walakpa Sandstone is a brown, fine-grained, moderately sorted
sandstone. The unit has a gross thickness of 29 feet, with 25 feet of net pay. Log porosites of
the perforated interval average 25 % Log analysis indicates porous, gas-bearing sandstone from
2260' to 2286', with several half-foot thick zones of reduced porosity. The lowermost two feet
of the Walakpa Sandstone is interpreted to be tight and non-productive.
