(Enclosed) INTRODUCTION Walakpa No. 3 was the firsu well drilled in the Walakpa Gas Field Development Program and was drilled in February, 1991. This development program was designed to drill as many as eight wells in the Walakpa Gas Field during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 winter drilling seasons. The field is located about 18 miles south- southwest of Barrow and was accessible by an ice road connecting with the Barrow Gas Field road. The Walakpa No. 3 well is located 23 feet from the south line and 994 feet from the east line of Section 19 Township 20 North, Range 19 West, Umiat Meridian, Alaska. The latitude is 71 degrees 03' 53.64" North and longitude is 156 degrees 57' 33.86" West. Alaska Plane Coordinates are: x = 623,683 and y = 6,240,319, zone 6. The Kelly Bushing elevation of this well is 41.6 feet above sea level. All depth measurements are in reference to this datum unless otherwise specified. Walakpa No. 3 was drilled one mile north of Walakpa No. 2, which tested gas in the Lower Cretaceous (Neocomian) Walakpa Sandstone. Structurally, Walakpa No. 3 is located updip from the No. 2 well; therefore this well was also expected to encounter gas in the Walakpa Sandstone. The objectives of Walakpa No. 3 were to test and develop the Walakpa Sandstone. The prognosis depth of the Walakpa Sandstone was 2380'. The productive zone was forecast to be 30 feet thick. Walakpa No. 3 was spudded on February 2, 1991, and was drilled to a total depth of 2574'. On March 2, 1991, the well was completed as a gas well with perforations of 8 shots per foot in the Walakpa Sandstone from 2369' to 2393'. The well is presently shut in awaiting pipeline facilities. The Department of Industrial Development of the North Slope Borough supervised and directed the drilling and support operations for this well through their Barrow Gas Field Development Project. All engineering and drilling operations were managed by Allen and Crouch, Petroleum Engineers. Geological matters were supervised by Arctic Slope Consulting Group. Ail other tops from wireline data. Walakpa Sandstone: 2368' - 2395' Cuttings sample intervals and lithologic descriptions focused on the Walakpa Sandstone, the objective formation of this well. In Wa!akpa No.3 the Walakpa Sandstone consists of light-brown, moderately hard, very fine-grained, moderately-to poorly-sorted, sandstone. Grains of the sandstone are predominantly clear quartz. Accessory grains include white chert, fragments of pyrite pseudomorphs after Inoceramus, and glauconite. The gamma ray log of the No. 3 well indicates sandstone from 2368' to 2395'. Log porosities of the sandstone average 22%. Formation Density logs are greater than 18% for the interval from 2368' to 2392'. Formation density/neutron porosity logs show continuous crossover from 2368' to 2392'. The lowermost 3 feet of the sandstone is interpreted to be tight and non-productive. In this interval density porosity valves are as low as 6%. The basal part of the sandstone is interpreted to be a zone of increased water saturation, possibly caused by a fining of the sandstone matrix and/or increased cementation. In general resistivity of the Walakpa Sandstone decreases toward the base, from a peak deep resistivity of 100 ohm-m at 2371' to 23 ohm-m at 2393'. Separation between the deep and shallow resistivity log curves is relatively uniform between 2371' and 2393', with the greatest amount of separation at the top of the interval. This decrease in resistivity with depth is interpreted to represent decreasing permeability and increasing water saturation toward the base of the sandstone. The Walakpa Sandstone in well No. 3 has a gross sand thickness of 27 feet. Engineers · Architects · Scientists · Surveyors Structure Introduction The Walakpa Sandstone reservoir is located on the south side of the Barrow structural high, often referred to as the "Barrow high". This subsurface high marks the northern edge of the Colville Basin which trends northwest from Prudhoe Bay extending through Barrow and on into the Chukchi Sea. In general, strata on the south side of the Barrow high are south-dipping and relatively unfaulted. In the Walakpa Gas Field area, strata dip to the south at about 2 degrees. Walakpa Nos. 1 and 2 were drilled on this regional south- dipping structure by the Husky/ONPRA in 1978 and 1981, respectively. Both of these wells encountered the gas-bearing Lower Cretaceous Walakpa Sandstone, and identified a minimum gas coi~mn of 550 feet if reservoir continuity is assumed. The 1991 North Slope Borough drilling program followed a progress~ ~e step-out, both laterally and updip, from Walakpa No. 2. Of the t~ original Walakpa wells, Walakpa No. 2 showed the most favorable conditions in the Walakpa Sandstone. Structural Position Walakpa No.3 is located 1 mile north-northwest of Walakpa No. 2, at shotpoint No. 235 on North Slope Borough seismic line 61-89. This seismic line ties walakpa No.3 to Walakpa No. 2. The inferred "top of Walakpa Sandstone" reflector at the Walakpa No.3 location was shown to be 44 milliseconds higher than at Walakpa No. 2. The prognosis depth to the top of the Walakpa Sandstone was 2380', based on seismic interpretation. The actual depth to the top of the Walakpa sandstone in Walakpa No. 3 was 2368', 230 feet updip from Walakpa No. 2. Walakpa No. 3 is located south of an inflection in seismic reflectors, marking an interpreted southward steepening of dips. North of this inflection, reflector dips are relatively constant extending north beyond Walakpa No. 1. Farther south of this inflection, reflector dips are also relatively constant, but with a steeper dip angle southward beyond Walakpa No. 2. Walakpa No. 3 was drilled to test the structurally highest portion of this southern domain and to test the northward continuity of the Walakpa reservoir. Drilling of Walakpa No.3 confirmed the northward continuity of the Walakpa Sandstone reservoir, and indicated that the above described seismic inflection represented true structure. Therefore, no hydrocarbon shows above the Walakpa Sandstone in the mud or the cuttings were recorded. No gas shows were detected while drilling the Walakpa Sandstone from 2368' to 2395'. Productive Zones The gamma ray log of Walakpa No. 3 indicates good sandstone development in the Walakpa Sandstone from 2368' to 2395'. Formation density/neutron porosity logs indicate good porosity and probable gaseous hydrocarbons from 2368' to 2392'. The interval from 2392' to 2395' is interpreted to be tight and nonproductive. CONCLUSIONS The objective formation of Walakpa No. 3, the Walakpa Sandstone of the Lower Cretaceous (Neocomian) 'pebble shale', was encountered at 2368'. This formation was found to be gas-bearing, and Walakpa No. 3 was completed as a gas well with perforations of 8 shots per foot from 2369' to 2393'. No other productive zones were encountered in this well. At Walakpa No. 3 the Walakpa Sandstone is a fine- to very fine-grained, moderately- to poorly-sorted sandstone. The unit has a gross thickness of 27 feet, with 24 feet of net pay sandstone. Log porosities of the perforated interval average 22%. Resistivity logs and cuttings samples analysis indicate continuous permeable sandstone through the pay zone. Walakpa No. 3 confirmed the northward continuity of the Waiakpa Sandstone within the Walakpa gas reservoir. Structurally, Waiakpa No. 3 is 230 feet updip from Walakpa No. 2, which is ~.©cated about one mile to the south. While awaiting the BOP stack nipple up, I conducted a follow-up inspection on the items found in non-compliance by inspector Lou Grimaldi during his previous walk-thru inspection. Five of the seven items had been corrected. Two additional N2 bottles were added to the N2 back-uD system. The master accumulator panel was hooked up so that all stack components could be opened and closed. A gas detector had been installed in the pit skid and was operational. The two hammer unions between the choke manifold and the gas buster were welded solid and the blind rams handle cover had been added. ~aturdav Fe~ 9 .... 1991: As a result of electrical problems with rig generator and test pump hook-up problems caused by the inability to test with a test plug because of the small stack bore diameter, the testing commenced at 2:00 p.m. and was concluded at 2:00 a.m. on 2/10/91. In addition to the non-comPliance items uncovered by Mr. Grimaldi, I found that the accumulator was not powered by an independant power source and there was no master accumulator pressure regulator by pass. The accumulator performance was satisfactory without the installation of the two additional accumulator bottles and larger capacity accumulator pump. However, as Mr. Grimaldi requested, I required the two additional bottles and pump be installed before the next well to handle the larger fluid requirements of the diverter system. The BOP test was successful with the exception of the upper kelly valve which could not be tested due to the lack of a 02-00lA (Rev. 6/89) 20/11/MEMO1.PM3 wrench to opera-~ the valve. The deficien~ s of this 'test were corrected on 2/11/91. When I arrived at the rig, they were still in the midst of rigging up. I inspected the rig and found it to be in very good shape with the exception that there was not a gas detector in the pit skid. As the rig was not operational and the diverter was not assembled~ I could not perform a diverter test on this day. Wednesd~ !./30/91 & Th. urs~av 1/.3!/91' Weathered in at camp. No activity at rig. Friday 2/1/91: I performed a diverter test and also tested the accumulator system. The diverter was satisfactory with the exception that one of the legs did not extend far enough to provide down wind protection. This was remedied immediately. On the accumulator system, it should be noted that the system passed API RF53 minimum standards marginally. Example. The pump took 2 minutes and 20 seconds to close the annular preventer and open the HCR and the capacity test was passed with the minimum 200 psi above, after repairing the relief valve. In summary: JADE rig #2 is a very good looking rig with the exception of the accumulator system. Bill Allen assured me that before they would nipple up the BOP stack, he would add another pump and 2 accumulator bottles to the system. This should give the accumulator set an extra margin of safety.
