Originally drilled to 16,428’ looking for oil, based on success after discovery of oil in Swanson River. After drilling surface the rig had a blowout while circulating at 3254’ and the well was killed 4 days later, and set casing at 3742’. The well was TDd and after testing for oil, plugged back to test for gas sands. A single packer tubing string was run. The well came online for fuel gas in 1967 for additional drilling and started sales providing gas to Chugach in 1968. The well was completed in the Beluga F and G sands and has been producing from those zones since. The well has produced 68.3 BCF to date. Seward B & M STAN~ OIL COMPANY OF CALiFORNiA,"'WE~TERN OPERATIONS, INC. - OPERATOR BLOWOUT SUMNA~ At 3:10 P.M., April 28, 1962, while circulating prior to a deviation survey, the well started .to flow over the Kelly bushing. The driller pulled up to place drillpipe opposite the pipe rams at which time the Kelly bushing was blown out of the table. He actuated the Eydril ~K preventer which cut out before complete closure. He then actuated the pipe rams on the ~" drill pipe and they were ineffective in controlling the blow which by then was about 50 million ~?ay gas mixed with large amounts of fine sand and considerable mud, rocks ~d~-~ater. All engines were shut down, and the crew evacuated the area. No loss or sain of fluid was noted before the well blew ~n~ The mudlogging unit noted the gas at about the same time as the driller. Both the contractor toolpusher and the Company Drilling Representative were near the substructure at the time of blowout. The manual closure wheels were checked and confimed that the pipe rams had closed completely but had cut out. Since the Kelly was still attached, it was decided to attempt to rig up to pump down the drillpipe with the skid mounted cementing unit and preparations were made to pull the unit away from the rig to a safe area with a caterpillar tractor. The rig engines by this time were covered with sand and mud. Also a portable generator was brought into the area to permit additional pressure on the Eydril GK preventer. The well co~inued to blow at about the same rate until 12:30 A~4., April 29, at .which time the drill pipe parted near the rotary table. Also the blow changed to clean gas at somewhat reduced rate. The blind rams in the Shaffer preventer were closed at 1:O0 A.M. April 29 and the well was brought under partial control with a light gas blow of about 1 million CF/Day continuing through the preventers with 850 psi on the casing. Au attempt was made to control this blow by flanging a valve on tbp of the Hydril GK preventer. Upon closure, it was found that the flange at the bottom of the GK had cut and was leaking. Attempts to plug the leaks with lost circulation material injected in ann~us were not effective . Heavy mud with lost Circulation. material was pumped in the casing annulus and after repeated stages and bleeding gas, the casing pressure was lowered to 25 psi. This reduced the blow sufficiently to permit replacing the cut out ~" rams with new blind rams and the new rams suceeded in completely shutting off the gas blow. Mud with lost circulation material was pumped in stages in attempt to completely kill the well with no success. Diesel Bentonite was introduced by several methods. Eventually Diesel - Bentonite and thin Gel mud were pumped through opposite sides of the casing head at the same time and followed with 50 sacks Calseal - cement mix. This plug was displaced with sufficient water to avoid having the plug too high. COMPLETION t~POI~ 2 -35 (1) Section 35.~ T.-13 N..~.. R. 10 W-~ Seward B & M SSmDA D OF' Page 5. - OPERATOR The plug'held approximately 1500 psi and upon bleed off, the pressure leveled at 13lO psi. At no time was any fluid seen upon bleeding off. It was con- cluded that'the annulus was holding and g~s was coming up the drill pipe fish. Slugs of 80-90 pcf mud were pumped in and the gas bled off until the well was dead. The cut out blin~ rams were replaced with new pipe rams and a new Hydril GK was installed. The top of the drillpipe fish was located at 54' and backed off to 137~. The drtllpipe was screwed in and the formation broke down with 3400 psi. Feeler runs would not go below 2019' inside the drill pipe with the free point located at 1325'. While working the pipe, gas broke in but was controlled with 70-75 pcf mud. 760 sacks cement was displaced out the drillpipe to leave 400' inside the drillpipe. After 9 hours, the annulu~ tested to 1600 psi and the drill pipe 2500 psi. The drill pipe was then backed off and recovered to 1963' using the Ford Alexander clean out toel as required. Upon backing off at 1963', circulation was lost a~ soon as the pipe was pulled a few feet and the well attempted to blow in. Appparently a bridge had been loosened. Again use was made of diesel bentonite by pumping diesel bentonite mix down the drillpipe while pumping mud in ~he annulus to keep the hole full at about the same rate. The pipe was washed over to 2012'. It was not possible to washover further due apparently to crooked pipe. An attempt w~s made to shoot and back off collars below 2024' with no success. An attempt was made to shoot the pipe apart at 2017' and the Pipe parted upon working at 2004'. A 10 5/8" Simplex bit was run and drilled by. the top of fish to 20S2'. A 12~" rerun bit was run to 2010'. ~2gular size 12~" bits would not go below 1895' as the casing appeared partly collapsed below that depth. A cement retainer was then set above the shoe of the 13 3/8" at 1895' and the shoe squeezed with 1400 sacks cement. Revised blowout prevention equipment was installed which included a hyclril GK and two sets of Shaffer rams.
