Superviso~ FROM' Bobby Fo..4te[~//,- \ SUBJECT: PetroleumI "nspector FILE NO: GGGIFZDD.doc Leakoff Test ARCO - PBU - DS 15-44 PTD # 96-0061 Prudhoe Bay Field Wednesday, June 26, 1996: ! traveled this date to ARCO's PBU well DS 15-44 after being contacted by my supervisor, Blair Wondzell, concerning the amount of cement that was circulated out of the well while cementing the surface casing using the "stab-in method". I arrived at the rig and met with Tom Anglen, SSD rig rep., and he informed me that he was on his way to the rig floor to do a leakoff test. Tom said that the Doyon toolpusher, Mark Eghiom, had performed a leakoff test while he and his alternate were making changeout but did not record the pressures on a chart. The first leakoff test, performed after drilling 20' (depth 3916') of new formation, had a EMW of 13.2 ppg and the second test, performed after ddlling approximately 57'( depth 3973'), had a EMW of 13.0 ppg. Attached to this report is a copy of the graph generated by Tom when the test was completed. As the chart shows/the formation began taking fluid at 775 psig and the pump was shut down. At the end of 5 minutes the pressure had dropped to 550 psig. At the end of the test I spoke with the mud engineer who was present when the cement job was performed and he told me that after pumping 330 bbls. of "scavenger cement" and lead cement he began getting contaminated mud back to surface. After pumping 650 bbls. of these 2 cement slurries combined he began getting 12.2 lb./gal, cement returns. Then 69 bbls. of 15.8 lbs/gal, of tail cement was pumped with 66 bbis. of displacement mud was pumped. The mud engineer told me that he got back approximately 135 bbls. of 12.2 cement back. The 15-46 well was expected to spud in early April, 1996 and the permit was granted on April 4,1996, the drilling schedule was revised and this well is now planned to spud about May 29,1996. At the time of request for the 15-46 permit no waiver for the diverter system was requested, however, since that time a waiver was requested and granted for the 15-43 well which is 60' away at surface (permit # 96-083). We therefore request consideration of a waiver on the diverter system for the 15-46 well. Sincerely, SSD Engineer ~A/kY I 5 1996 Alaska 0il & Gas Cons. Hole cleaning is critical, design flowrates high enough to clean the expected washed out hole, not gauge hole. It is recommended that all drills, except for a diverter drill, be scheduled for either casing point or lower section of hole. Drill, case and cement the surface hole as fast as possible. Faulting In many wells on Drill Site 15, drilling through faults has resulted in catastrophic lost returns. Be aware that faults are present on Drill Site 15 and are known to be conductive. The asset have listed as a major uncertainty the presence and location of smaller conductive faults. A major fault is mapped just prior to reaching to top of the Sag River. The wellbore has been designed to cross this fault prior to reaching the Sag River. No other faults have been prognosed within the target polygon. Close Approaches The nearest surface well, 15-19 is 15 ft north from the 15-49 wellhead. The 15-33 is located 45ft south of the 15-49. Both wells will be shut-in and secured during the move in and rigup/rig down. All the wells can be returned to service after rig up and until just before rig release. There is a deep close approach with the 15-21 well beginning at 11800'MD depth on the 15-49 and continuing to TD. The minimum separation distance is 409'. Pore Pressure Expectations CRETACEOUS (4014'-7816'MD): The Cretaceous interval on Drill Site 15 has possible overpressured sands in the T-5 to K12 intervals. The degree of overpressuring will depend at any given time on the daily injection volume at GC3-D. The 15-48, drilling on Jan 23, 1996, had flow between 4000-5675 MD, (4000-5630 TVD). Mud weight had to be raised from 9.3 ppg to 9.8 ppg. Close contact with the onsite pad supervisor on the injection status at GC3-D is necessary. It is recommended that a 9.8 ppg mud is in the hole prior to 4500 TVD. K-5 to BASE HRZ (9110'-9885' MD): Pore pressures should be in the normal range considering shales (9.2-9.5 ppg) but 9.8 ppg should be maintained due to Cretaceous overpressure. PUT RIVER (9885-9891'MD): Some gas cut mud problems have been observed. It is recommended that mud weight be 10.2 ppg at the Put River. 15-48 drilled into the Put River with 10.0 ppg mud, the mud was gas cut and the weight was raised in steps to 10.4 ppg before drilling ahead. Prior wells this year and late last year on DS 15 drilled the Put River with 10.0-10.1 ppg. The 10.2 ppg weight should produce sufficient overbalance for the Put River. High levels of cuttings gas should be expected from this interval. If gas-cut mud becomes a problem, pick up off bottom and circulate the gas cut mud out of the system. If after circulating bottoms up the gas still appears in the mud, raise the mud weight by 0.1-0.2 ppg and circulate the gas out. Continue drilling if the well appears stable. SAG RIVER (10270'-10320' MD): No DS 15 well drilled during the 1995- 96 season has seen problems with the Sag while drilling with 10.2-10.4 ppg fluid. SADLEROCHIT (10390-TD): Current pore pressure in the Sadelrochit is 3550 psi @ 8800' TVDss (7.7 ppg EMW). Mud weights used on DS 15 previously were 8.8 - 9.3 ppg. Lost Circulation Lost circulation has been a serious problem on Drill Site 15, but catastrophic losses have been primarily associated with crossing faults. Be prepared to handle massive lost circulation associated with faults following M-I's recommendations, a prototype (Damaging) massive loss circulation prevention fluid has been developed but not tested, use is decided on a case by case condition. Check with D. Nims before use. Lost circulation from seepage has been most common at mud weights greater than 10.2 ppg, with loss rates of 20 - 50 bph. Be prepared to handle lost circulation as we drill below the Put River, especially since there is a major fault expected in the Kingak. If lost circulation due to seepage occurs and is at a Iow rate, OM Seal and Liquid Casing have shown to be effective. In cases of catastrophic losses, pre-treatment with calcium carbonate followed by Maraseal has been effective in controlling losses. · Stuck Pipe There has been several cases of stuck pipe, 15-6 Cretaceous, 15-24 Ivishak and 15-4 Ivishak zone 2. There were also some cases of tite hole. Stuck pipe potential for this well is highest at the top of the Shublik due to the decrease in pore pressure, and in the Kingak due to mud weights too Iow for the stabilization of the shales ° Surface Casing Shoe Kick Tolerance The smallest kick tolerance for the casing shoes is calculated as 30 bbls of influx assuming a swabbed gas influx at the top of the Put River along the planned directional path. Based on 10.2 ppg MW @7873'TVD, 10.2 ppg reservoir pore pressure, and a 12.3 ppg shoe test. 15-49 DRILLING AND COMPLETION PROGRAM , MIRU drilling rig. N/U diverter and function test same. All drilling and completion fluids can be annular injected. Well DS 15-46 is being permitted for annular injection. Request to AOGCC for Annular Pumping Approval For DS 15-46 1. Approval is requested for Annular Pumping for well DS 15-46 and any well on the pad/drillsite previously permitted for disposal activities by AGOCC. 2. The Base of the Permafrost for all wells located in the PBU Unit is 1900 feet. Aquifers in the PBU Unit have been exempted from Class II injection activities by the AOGCC by Aquifer Exemption Order #1 as referenced in Area Injection Order #4 (PBU-EOA). 3. The receiving zone to which the fluids will migrate is identified as the Sagavanirtok (Tertiary/Cretaceous Sands) geological formation at 3574 'TVD. The confining layer is the overlying shales above the SV3, defined by the base of the permafrost and 3574 'TVD. Additional data which demonstrates the confining layers, porosity, and permeability of the injection zone was submitted to the AOGCC on 7/25/95. 4. There are 53 wells on Pad/Drillsite 15. There may be additional unidentified wells within a quarter mile distance from the subject well. There are no domestic or industrial water use wells located within one mile of the project area. 5-6. The drilling wastes to be disposed of during this operations can be defined as drilling muds and cuttings, rig wash up and waste water, cement wash up water, brine, and formation fluids. The maximum volume to be disposed of in the annulus is 35,000 bbls. The maximum density is 17 ppg. 7. The Maximum Allowable Surface Pressure while annular pumping is calculated according to the following equation and is 1535 psi for a 17 ppg fluid in this well. MASP = 4328 psig - ((fluid density ppg - 1.9) X 0.052 X 9-5/8" Casing Shoe TVD 8. The 9-5/8" casing shoe will be set at 3989'md (3556' tvd) and cemented with 1602 sacks of cement. This depth is below the base of the permafrost (1966'TVD) and into the SV3 formation which has a long established history of annular pumping at PBU. 9. The burst rating (80%) for the 9-5/8" casing is 4600 psig while the collapse rating (80%) of the 7" 26# L80 casing is 4325 psig. The break down pressure of the Ugnu formation is 13.5 ppg equivalent mud weight. 10. Pumping into the hydrocarbon reservior will not occur. DO NOT EXCEED 35,000 BBLS IN ANY ANNULUS.
