Petroleum Engineer · SUBJECT: Test BOPE and Inspect Operations at LL&E - Doyon Ltd. No. 2, Kandik Basin ' T~esday, March 22, 1977 - I left Anchorage by company charter aircraft at 7':45 AM-~6~' t~st ~lOwout preventer equipment and drilling operations at the LL&E- Doyon No. 2 exploratory drilling well. Lawrence Davis, LL&E project manager, and a conmmrcial photographer accompanied me on the flight. We arrived at the ice airstrip about a mile from the vmll location at 10:00 AM. ! was driven over the ice road to Parker Rig No. 147 where I met Gene Harmon, consultant drilling Superintendent for LL&E. The Doyon No. 2 is northeast of Fairbanks and about 23 miles from the Canadian border in rolling hills covered with small to medium sized conifers and hardwood trees. It is 38 miles north of the LL&E - Doyon No. 1, P&A well drilled this time last year. When I arrived they were preparing to cement the 13 3/8" surface casing and estimated the BOPE test vmuld start before the next morning. I visited with Gene Hard, mm and Lawrence Davis, toured the rig and location, and then watched the casing cementing.operation. About 1:30 PM i accepted an invitation to accompany Lawrence Davis and the photographer, by helicopter, to the LL&E - Doyon No. 3 well location being prepared 48 miles to the north. An ice road, which will be abandoned before spring break-up, connects the No. 2 and No. 3 locations. We landed and met people supervising construction of the No. 3 drilling pad, the mile long gravel airstrip, connecting gravel ' roads and rock quarry. It was a beehive ' i of around-the-clock actlv ty, They were experiencing difficulty finding water. They had drilled four dry wells to 700' and were at 150' on the fifth try. Parker Rig No. 147 will be flown from No. 2 to. No. 3 by 10,000 lb. capacity helicopters. They estimate that rig down, 342 chopper loads, and rig up will take 30 days. This rig was constructed to be nmved to remote sites in this manner. We arrived back at Doyon No. 2 about 6'00 PM. I~ippling up BOP's was getting underway. SUednesday, Harch 23, 1977 - Nippling up contiilued through the. day and night. ¥~--'~as ~h~-.CO~Sumi~beCaus6 all' Casing strings are hung about 150' below Doyon No. 2 -2- May 4, 1977 ground surface with subsea type casing hangars. The top 150' of the 13 3/8" by 20" casing annulus had to be changed over to diesel. The top 150' of soil is very ice rich so efforts are being made to prevent melttng this section and to getting casing support below 150'. I made a careful location inspection. The reserve pit, burn pit and test pit were well bermed. Pillow and vertical steel fuel tanks were in diked and lined areas. The sewage treatment plant discharged into a diked pit. The location was orderly and housekeeping was good. Thursday, March 24, 1977 - Nippling up BOP's was prolonged because a ~seal for-the 'piPe rams door had to be ordered from Anchorage. At 2:15 PM the Parker toolpusher, Jim Bates, called me to start BOPE tests. Water pressured by the BOP accumulator was used to apply 5000 psig to the choke manifold. All eight valves, 14 flanged connections, remote adjustable choke, manual adjustable choke, HCR valve and choke line valve were tested good at 5000 psig. There was a delay while the pipe ram door seal was installed, then the hydril was tested at 2700 psig. The two sets of pipe rams, blind rams, kill line valves, lower kelly valve, kelly and floor dart valve were tested to 5000 psig. The kelly cock failed to test so a new one was installed and tested at 5000 pslg. The ball floor valve was being overhauled. The BOP closing system accumulator had 2600 psig pressure but there was no N2 backup BOP closing system. Also the remote BOP controls would not clos~ the BOP's. Testing was completed .at ll:30 PM. I completed a "Field Inspection Report" indicating satisfactory rig and location inspection, and BOPE test with the following provisions: {1) install N2 backup BOP closing system {2) locate repaired ball type floor valve on rig floor {3) repair remote BOP closing controls. I left a copy of my report with Gene Harmon at the rig, sent a copy to Lawrence Davis, with LL&E in Anchorage, and a copy is attached. I departed the Doyon No. 2 well by LL&E contract aircraft at 12:30 AM and arrived in Anchorage at 3:00 AM. Monday, March 28, 1977 - Gene Har~n phoned that: (1) the N2 backup BOP ~i~-gin~-~-§~s~h~~n installed; (2) the remote BOP controls were repaired and working properly: and (3) the ball type floor valve was repaired and in place. !_n_ sqmmary: BOPE and drilling operations were checked on the LL&E - Doyon NO. 2 wel'¥. All items were satisfactory except three and these were sub- sequently corrected.
