It is believed that these procedures represent good oil field practice and that they will not only enhance our performance on this well but will improve overall safety of the operation. SURFACE CASING -- 0 - 300': 1. A 22" hole is to be drilled in three stages - 9-7/8", 15", 22". The drilling of a 9-7/8" hole initially shouid result in a straight hole and will permit ~etter handling of lost circulation should it be encountered. 2. A chemiCal test is to be run on water to be used for cementing and if there is any doubt as to its compatibility, inlet water will be used. 3. Preheat water for cementing so that cement water slurry will be at least 50 F. Three percent (3%) calcium chloride accelerator will be used with cement pumped through drilling pipe stabbed into a duplex shoe. 4. The following equipment is to be installed and tested prior to drilling out the 16" shoe: a) Degasser to be installed and tested for operation. b) Adequate phone communication is to be installed between the mud logger's trailer and driller's location. Test for opera- tion once each hour. c) A 20" single gate with CSO rams and hydril are to be installed on 16" casing. The hydraulic line operating the hydril will be pressure connected to a hydraulic valve located in the blow-down line. Should the hydril be closed, the blow-down line will automatically be opened in order to preclude pressure on the 16" casing. d) A Series '600 control manifold with welded and flanged connections is to be installed. CONFID NT A Long Lake Unit ~1 Special Conditions & Procedures 3-13-73 page 2 e) Mud is to be conditioned to between 85 and 88~ with 44 to 48 viscosity prior to dril- ling out the shoe. f) The cement k° the shoe is to be drilled out with water to avoid contamination of mud. Convert to mud while drilling the shoe. g) A blow-down from the control manifold shall be laid and tied down approximately 150' from the rig. UPPER INTERMEDIATE HOLE -- 300' - 3000': 1. Drill out 16" casing shoe with 9-7/8" bit and 15" hole opener to center the hole. Drill ahead with 9-7/8" bit only. 2. One member of each drilling crew is to remain on the ditch and maintain continuous record of mud weight throughout this interval. He will not be allowed to leave this station unless relieved. In addition to this, the mud company will provide two mud men throughout this interval, one on duty at alltimes. 3. Mud logger is to stay in the trailer and monitor gas readings at all times when drilling and opening hole. Special precaution should be taken prior to making connections, and the driller should be advised at any time the mud logger feels that a hazardous condition exists. Communications should be checked once each hour. 4. The Texaco drilling foreman will be on the floor when starting out of the hole to determine that the hole is not swabbing and that the well is under control. He will also instruct the "ditch watcher" to monitor for swabbing as well as the mud man on tower. The Texaco foreman will also be on the floor prior to reaching bottom and through the "bottoms up". The Texaco foreman and contract tool pusher will not be absent from the drilling rig at the same time throug~ this interval. 5. If sufficient gas is encountered, mud will be in- creased as necessary. If mud weight reaches the range of 100, lost circulation material should be used. 6. A float will be installed in the drilling string prior to drilling out the 16" shoe. CONFIDENTIAL Long Lake Unit #1 Special Conditions & Procedures 3-13-73 Page 3 7. While 10-3/4" casing is being run, change CSO rams to 10~3/4" . 8. Slips for hanging 10-3/4" casing are to be dropped through the blow-out preventors in order to ensure centering. If for any reason this is not possible, pipe rams are to be closed to center casing. LOWER HOLE -- 3000' to 11,200': 1. Mud should be conditioned prior to drilling 10-3/4" and should be brought to specifications of approximately 759 and 40 to 45 viscosity. 2. A cross section showing anticipated formations will be furnished by the well site geologist. Recommended bit program will be furnished under separate cover. 3. In general, bit program will incorporate long-tooth bits throughout this interval, and bits shorter than OWV should not be necessary. 4. Rotary speeds of between 150 and 180 with weights between 30 and 50,000~ should be run so long as they are compatible with directional program. ~. 5. If directional control is effective, every effort should be made to reduce surveys to a minimum. 6. Mechanical drilling jars (Daly type) will be included in the drilling string below the 10-3/4" casing shoe. 7. Caution should be exercised in the event of increased gas measurements and/or hole sloughing conditions mud to preclude over-reaction to these problems. Previous experience indicates that premature increase of mud weight and/or viscosity results in only temporary solution to these problems, and on numerous occasions has resulted in aggravation rather than improvement. At its extreme, additional strings of casing have been required due to unnecessary changes in flow prop'erties of circulated fluids. 8. If high-pressure salt water flow is encountered, immediate action should be taken to convert the mud system to a salt-tolerant condition. CONFIDENTIAL Long Lake Unit #1 Special Conditions & Procedures 3-13-73 Page 4 GENERAL RECO~ENDATIONS: 1. A hydraulic program will be designed to maintain an annular velocity between 85 and 100 in both the 15" and 9-7,/8" holes. An annular velocity of approxi- mately 85 is considered optimum through coal beds in order to minimize hole washing and sloughing. 2. There will be a pre-spud meeting of all field per- sonnel to conduct a school in blowout prevention and to issue instructions concerning each man's duties and responsibilities in any emergency situation. A regular schedule of these schools will also be ini- tiated by the contractor, possibly in coordination with normal tests conducted each Monday. 3. The pipe will be kept in motion at all times. 4. On any drilling break a maximum of ten (10) feet shall be drilled before the bit is picked up off bottom. An attempt should be made to circulate back to bottom. If fill is found, clean the hole to bottom and pick back up off bottom. Repeat this procedure until no fill is found. Drill ahead at maximum inter- vals of ten (10) feet throughout the drilling break and circulate out any fill as outlined above. This procedure is designed~to prevent coal from sluffing in and sticking the pipe.
