February ~5, .197,2 - I depar~e~Anchorage for West Foreland by company chartered ~tn engine Beechcro~t at.9:15 A.M. wl,h Bob Reerden and Ben Tal lay, Union Ol I of Californla personnel in charge of dri I ling operations In the Cook Inlet Area. The purpose of the ,rip was to make final abandoned well location inspections of Unlon-Bachatna Creek Unit Numbers I, IS, and, 7. We landed at the West Foreland airstrip and were met by a Union ci~artered hal lcopter from East Foreland. We felt Immediately on the inspection trip. We flew over the off-loading site at Wes, Foreland where the house tral lets, drl t I lng rig, heavy equipment and suppl les from the central camp and wel I locations had been moved. All this equipment will be barged to Kenal next summer. We flew the road, which was in excel lent condition, to Union's camp on top of a Iow hill, centrally located to the originat seven proposed drilling locations. This camp had been used in the past by Shell 011 Company. Ben Tel lay mentioned that before moving to this slte they hauled out about eighty 55 gallon drums which had been left by Shell 011 Company. The camp si,e had been plowed at,er everything was moved away and all the remaining loose snow had blown away exposing a couple of large boards, which we removed. Ben explained that the snow berm was pushed back and fork I'if,s slfted ,hrough It to make sure no debris was burled, Jus, before the rolling equlpmen, was taken to the off-loading area. See Photos #1, #2, and #3. We left the central camp site and flew the 17 miles of Ice road to the most distant weti, No. 7. The road was lald out In a meandering pattern In order to miss wooded areas and to give the same appearance as the creeks and streams in this vicintty. Parts of the road that were drifted with snow did have this desired effect in sharp contrast tO the straight selsmic cuts across the countryslde~ We landed at the Bachatna Creek Unit No. 7 location, the most recently drilled well. This location had been blown clean of snow exposing a few sinai I pieces of vtsqueen, metal fastening strips and a tin can. We gathered all these Items up and put them in the chopper. The small pit had been mounded over to guard against ground settl lng later on. The abondoned well marker was I/4" steel plate with ~.~e required information cut !nfo It. The plate was welded to the steel pipe whlch was welded to the wel I cas ing and set into the cement cas ing surface p Iug. The abandoned well iaarkers for al I three locations were constructed and se, the same. See Photo #4. Next, we flew cross country to Bachatna Creek Unit No. I. This location was located in s~all to medium size timber. The location was cleanedtthen the Homer L. Burrell -2- February 29, 1972 original trees were laid In a random manner over the site to glve It a more natural appearance and to Inhibit erosion. The site was level except for the small pit which ~s mounded over. The abandoned well marker was slmllar to the marker at Well No, 7. See Photo ~5. We flew from Well No, I to Bachatna Creek Unit No. 3. This location was very similar to the previous location, It is located in the trees and the down timber was .replaced In a random manner as at Well No. I. The Iocallon was leveled except for the small pit whlch was mounded over. The well sign was slmi lar to the other two wells. See Photo ~6. The helicopter was running very Iow on fuel now. so we flew cross country back to the West Fore I and a I rstr t p. .. We left immediately for Anchorage via the twin engine Beechcraft. Ben Tal ley asked the ~ilot to fly Iow and slow along the 16" caslnghead gas pipeline right-of-way between West Foreland and Granite Point. Approximately the first half of the plpellne length was welded and buried, except for stream crossings. About two mi les of pfpe at the north end remained to be welded. Four stream crossings and four road crossings stl'l I had to be Instal led. Work wes progressing on the crossings, the flnal two miles of welding, and plpellne burial as we flew along the pipellne right-or-way. We passed close to the Texaco-Nlcolal Creek No. 5 well which was drl II lng. We arrlved In Anchorage about t2.~i5 P.M. I made out field inspection reports for the three wel Is, approvlng final inspection for these abandoned locations. I gave two copies of each rep~ to Ben Tal ley and retained one copy of each, attached, for our records. Attachments SatiSf~cto~ Item , . I hereby certifY' ~e°rrect with the Division of Mines &finerals by the 15th of the succeeding month, unless otherwise directed. Note to files Uni on Oi 1 Comp.any Bachatna Creek ilo. 7 On February 6, 1972, I received a telephone call at home from Ben Talley outlining drilling activity on subject well to date. The well had been drilled to a total depth of 2655' and they were logging at the time. The)' spudded-in in the Tyonek formation at top of Hemlock at 1330', West foreland 1768' and jurassic at 2555'. They were approx- imately 100' in the basement and were shooting sidewall samples. No shows had been en countered. He proposed a plugging abandonment as follows: drill pipe at 1850' with a 300' plug which would give lO0' below and 200' above West Foreland top; set drill pipe at 1430' with a 300' plug which would give 100' below and 200' above at top of Hemlock. 9 5/8 casing shoe is at 806' and he proposed a plug lO0' out of the shoe and 200' in casing. Then a lO0' surface plug with normal abandonment markers. I verbally approved the proposed procedure over the telephone. Subsequently, on February 7, 1972, Ben called me by phone, advising that log cal- culations indicated, anomalies in the Hemlock - to the extent that they felt they had to test to determine the cause of the anomalies. All logs showed much higher in the Hemlock at this location than at other wells drilled in the vicinity. Porosity calculations were 29% and they had not yet received lab analysis back on the sidewall samples. If they do test, they will set 1900' of 7" casing and circulate cement to sur- face. I verbally approved of this program by phone. J aa~a~y 24, ti~:h~tae Creek alt F/ Untcm OI 1 Cempan¥ ef Petrol t ~ t4ro Rebert T.
