Uoyle H. Hamilton .~//~ Chief Petrolemt Engineer FROM: John C. ~!.il ler Petroleum Engineer ~^~ "~.4ay 21, 1976 su,J~c~.. Check BOPE & Drilling Operations at LL&E-Doyon No. l, Kandik Basin APr!!~ ~28_,~ 1976- I traveled b~ company charter aircraft to the captioned Well to Che~--deficiencies which o~ccurred on a March 24, !975 visit. These deficiencies were (1)no we)l sign. (2) no .berm around fuel tanks (3) replace and retest leaking kelly cock, and (4) test second (bottom) set of pipe rams after necessary piping modifications. I left Anchorage at 8:55 AMand arrived at. LL&E Doyon No. 1 at 10:15 AM. Bob Chadwick, consulting drilling engineer for LL&E,.met the plane at the newly constructed gravel airstrip A directional survey was undemtvay so pressure testinfl was delayed. In the meantime, Bob and i toured the area and drill site. The fuel tanks had been bermed with dirt and two well signs had been installed. A pressure test of the extra set of pipe rams could not be done because pipe modifications necessary to accomplish this were held up waiting on delivery of special alloy valves for hydrogen sulfide service. It should be noted that these pipe rams are an extra set that are not normally provided even on exploratory wells. Logging was finished at 2:15 PM and pressure testing the kelly cock was started. Testing was prolonged while we searched for an elusive leak. It turned out to be a faulty gasket in a mud line union. A good test on the kelly cock at 4500 psig through the rotary hose was obtained. I noted the three satisfactory items and the still pending test on 'the extra pipe rams on a Field Inspection Report. I left a copy with Bob Chadwick, mailed a copy to Tom Moore with LL&E in Anchorage, and a copy is attached. I departed immediately on the LL&E charter plane and arrived in Anchorage at 7:55 PM. In sunm~ary, I revisited the subject exploratory drilling well located on Doyon native lands to check prior visit deficiencies. All deficiencies were corrected except one. A pressure test on an extra set of pipe rams is still to be witnessed when valves for hddrogen sulfide service are received and instal 1 ed. .~. . · Attach)Trent .<sat~.~'faCtOry.-:- :>~TyPe _In~P~.q~jon Satisfactory Type Inspection · ~ Y~~:~tem.-'(':~) '~oE'A'~n;~enera] Yes' ~o -~te~ ( ) ~OPE Tests ..'~ ' ~--:.,'(.,~'-~ .... ~.~ We]] S~9n ' ( ) ( ) IS. DATE SUBJECT: April l, 1976 BOPE Test and Operations Inspection at LL&E - Doyon Ltd No. l, Kandtk Basin .Marc~ 23, 1976 I departed Anc.horage by conmmrcial aircraft at 1:30 PM for the s:~6J'&ct i~ell-:- ~ landed at Fairbanks at 2:20 PM and transferred to a Louisiana Land and Exploration Company {~LL&E} charter flight. Departure was delayed until ~6:40 PM while a plane tire that blew out was repaired. Our plane loaded, with perSonnel and supplies landed on the ice airstrip east of Circle near the Canadian border at 7:35 PM. The Parker Rig No. 147 and camp was less than a mile from the airstrip via a good gravel road, At the camp I met consulting drilling engineer for LL&E, Bob Chadwick, and Parker toolpusher,. Clyde Argo. Nippling up was to be completed during the night and testing started in the morning. Bob explained the difficulty they'd had drilling a straight surface hole in steeply dipping fomations, and the anomalous high temperatute emcountered at a shallow depth. March 24, 1976 - At 7 AM B°b Chadwick and I .left on a tour of the area, The EountrYL'~s rolling low to high hills with thick stands of small spruce trees. WillOWs and large spruce, birch and cottonwood trees grow along the many creeks and rivers. Tundra is absent, A road wlth one to two feet of gravel on the ground supports large loads.. A 5000 .foot-gravel runway was being built adjacent to the ice airstrip and should be completed in ten days, Gravel was being obtained from a quarry operated _on.. a near-by .hill top. Permits to obtain river grail had not been pursued as that gravel was very poor quality, t'.~ater for the rig and camp was obtained .... ~ the Black River a sump in the ground near the river and a' lake on federal lands. We returned to the. all new 20-000 foot capacity rig and camp. Bob explained that the entire drilling, rig and camp broke down into 1,180 individual packages each ~ighing 4000 lbs. or less. and transportable by helicopter. It is all assembled with one D-5 cat with a crane attachment. A package sewage treatment plant and lagoon is utilized and all combustibles are incinerated. Housekeeping was good. There was no well sign and no berms around the fuel tanks, This was discussed and Bob agreed to build ta~berms using stockpiled dirt. Testing the blowout preventer equipment started at lO AM using water and a triplex ce~ting pump. Test pressure-, was limited to 4000 psig by the 5" pump liners.. ~ B~ a~t s~~ at ~ ~p ~ a~ular .~~r, b11qd ~ p~ '~1.~-t~- ~. Blow Out Preventers: BOP's should be operated each trip and choke line flushed weekly. Pressure should be maintained on Accumulator for BOP's at all times. Test surface casing and all related equipment (BOP's) to 1,000 psi. Test intermediate casing to 1,500 psi. Test protective casing to 2,500 psi. II. Cgnt.rol .D~illing Practice and Hole Safety: a) Any time there is significant gas increase (double base line values or more) or chloride increase, particulary when this increase is associated with drilling rate increases that indicate broken or sand stringer type development, drilling progress shall be stopped and bottoms circulated up. b) After any gas shows or trouble zones have been encountered that indicate abnormal pressures, such as mud being gas cut .5 #/gallon or more, or having to increase the mud weight above the planned weight to contain gas show or salt water flow, extreme caution should be exercised in drilling ahead. A limit should not be set on drilling rate, as this would mask drilling breaks. However, it may be advisable to not let the bit to get more than 15' ahead of returns from bottom be'fore stopping drilling progress and circulating out. Drilling progress should always stop when: . There is any significant change in pit level indicating lost returns or fluid entry into well bore. 2. There is a significant increase in pump strokes per minute indicating help from bottom. c) On trips, make sure the hole is taking proper mud to fill hole for pipe displacement. d) Safety of the operation is paramount; therefore, when in doubt, circulate out. , e) In no case shall basic plans be arbitrarily changed without having discussed the problem with the Operations Manager in the Anchorage office. III. In Controlling Any Kick where BOP's Have to be Closed: a) Reducing pump rate invites increase gas or salt water in mud. After closing preventors, open well on the 3" or 4" flow line - No Choke - until it can be determined that maximum pump rate will not keep up or equal well flow. This is to prevent any unnatural pressure on the formation. To determine what this unnatural pressure on the for. marion might be due to circulating through the control manifold, the following procedure is requested: 1. Prior to drilling out below surface casing and any other subsequent string of casing; (a) Establish normal circulating pressure with the size lines, pump~ stroke rate to be used in drilling and note same on drilling report. (b) With pump operating at this rate and pressure, open water operated valve on control manifold. (c) Close preventor to force circulation through control manifold. (d) Note this circulating pressure and record same on daily drilling report. (e) If there is any increase, record this difference. (f) Reduce pump stroke rate to reduce to normal circulating pressure. (g) Record this pump stroke rate on drilling report. (h) In the event of gas kick, do not exceed rate established in item "g". b) If pit level continued to increase, put well on 2" full opening No Choke choke line, and shut in 3" or 4" line. While well is shut in making changes from 3" or 4" to 2" choke like, check pressure or preven'~ers, then adjust pump rate to Not Exceed this static pressure or Preventers. If pit level continues to increase., adjust choke size until well can be contained or has to be shut in. IV. Hole Filling Frequency: Never let mud get more than 100' down holel ''This will take 49# off hydrostatic with 9.5~/gal. mud, 57# with ll#/hal, mud, 68~ with 13~/gal. mud, and 88~ with . 17#/gal. mud. Recommend filling hole ~ery five stds. with dry 4 1/2" D.P. or every three stds. with wet pipe. Extreme caution should be taken to insure that the hole is taking the ro~ amount of mud. ' ~eware of balled bits that could be swab~-~g, pit 1~-~ r~order should be located within easy vision of the driller. V.~ Pipe and..Equipment Deliveries and Measurements: The Company Engineer, or Consultant Engineer, shall check equipment deliveries to ascertain that the proper items are available when needed. In his absence, the tool pusher is requested %o perform".this function. It shall be the responsibility of the Company Engineer, and/or the tool pusher to measure all tubular goods to be used in the hole. In all cases, there shall be a measurement on all tubular goods on location, being or to be used in the hole in order that a check of pipe left on the rack will correct any measurem~ ...... confusion. This particularly concerns drill pipe'. VI. RePOrts: Morning reports will be made out on IAODC drilling report form sheets, and company report sheets, and be called in to the Anchorage, Alaska, office by the company representative on the job. In case t~e company representative is not available, the report will be called by the tool pusher to the company representative at a designated spot, or to the Anchorage, Alaska, office. The Geologist on the job, or in his absence, the mud logger, shall be responsible for the preparation of a daily, 24 hour summary of all shows and the results of having circulated out any breaks, even though there is no significant gas increase associated with the circulation out of a drilling break. This report shall be ready each morning by 8:00 a.m., and/or in time to be called in with the regular drilling report. Ail copies of tickets and written reports will be sent in as fast as possible to the Anchorage o~fice at 550 West Eighth Avenue, Anchorage, Alaska 99501.
