Field Trip - Abandoned Well
Location Inspection of Union-
Bachatna Creek Unlt Numbers
I, 3, and 7.
~e~?uary 25, .1972_- I depar-teG'd~nchorage for West Foreland by company
chartered 1~ I n engi ne Beechcr~t at 9: 15 A.14. w I th Bob Reerden and Ben
Tal lay, Union Oi t of Cailfornta personnel In charge of dri I ling operations
in the Cook Inlet Area. The purpose of the trlp was to make final abandoned
well location inspections of Union-Bachatna Creek Unit Numbers I, 3, and,
7.
We landed a, the West Foreland airs, rip and were met by a Union cl~artered
helicopter from East Foreland. We faf, immediately on the inspection trip.
We flew over the off-loading site at West Forel.and where the house ?ral lets,
drI t I lng rig, heavy equipment and suppl les from the central camp and wel I
locations had been moved. All this equipment will be barged to Kenai
next summer. We flew the road, which was in excel lent condltfon, to
Union's camp on top of a Iow hi il, centrally located to the original seven
proposed drilling locations. This camp had been used In the past by Shell
Oil Company. Ben Tailey mentioned that before moving to this site they
hauled out about eighty 55 gallon drums which had been left by Shell 0II
Company. The camp site had been plo~ed after everythtng~was moved away
and all the remaining loose snow had blown away exposing a couple of large
boards,' which we removed. Ben explained that the snow berm was pushed
back and fork lifts slfted through It to make sure no debrls was buried,
Just before the roi ling equipment was taken to the off-loading area. See
Photos #1, i~2, and #3.
We left the central camp site and flew the 17 miles of ice road to the most
distant well, No. 7. The road was laid out in a meanderlng pattern In order
to miss wooded areas and to give the same. appearance as the creeks and
streams in this vicinity. Parts of the road that were drifted with snow
did have this desired effect in sharp contrast tO the straight selsmlc
cuts across the countryside, We landed at the Bachatna Creek Unit No. 7
location, the most recently drllled well. This location had been blown clean
of snow exposing a few small places of vlsqueen, metal fastening strips and
a tin can. We gathered all these Items up and put them In the chopper. The
small pit had been mounded over to guard against ground settling later on.
The abandoned well marker was 1/4" steel plate ~lth ~e required Information
cut Into lt. The plate was welded to the steel plpe ~hlch was welded to
the well casing and set into the cement casing surface plug. The abandoned
well i/iarkers for all three locations were constructed and set the same. See
Photo #4.
Next, we flew cross country to Bachatna Creek Unit th. I. This location was
located in small to medium size tlmbe-~. The location ~as cleanedtthen the

original trees were laid in a random manner over the site to glve I, a more
natural appearance and to inhibit erosion. The site was level except for the
small pit which ~s mounded over. The abandoned well marker was slmllar to
the marker a, Well No. 7. See Photo #5.
We f. lew from ~ell No. i ,o Bachatna Creek Unl, No. 3. This location was very
simi lar to ,he previous location. 1, is located In the trees and the down
timber was .replaced tn a random manner as a, Well No. I. The Iocs$lon was
leveled except for the small pi, which was mounded over. The well sign
was slmi lar ,o the o, her ,wo wells. See Pho,o #6. The helloop,er was
running very Iow on fuel now so we flew cross court,fy back to ,he West
Fore I and a
We left immedla, ely for Anchorage via ,he ,win engine Beechcraft. Ben Tal ley
asked ,he ~11o, ,o fly Iow and slow along the 16' caslnghead gas plpellne
right-of-way between West Foreland and Granite Poln,. Approximately ,he firs,
half of the pipeline length was welded and buried, except for s,ream crosslngs.
About ,wo mi les of ptpe at ,he nor, h end remained to be welded. Four stream
crossings and four road crossings still had to be Ins,al led. Work wes
progressing on the crosstngs~ the final t~o miles of welding, and pipeline
burial as we flew along ~he pipeline rlgh,-ott-way. We passed close to ,he
Texaco-Nicoiai Creek No. 5 wel I which was drl I I lng. We arrlved In AP~horage
about 12.~45 P.M. I made out field inspection repor, s for the ,hree wel Is,
approvlng final Inspection for these abandoned Ioca, lons. I gave ,wo copies
~""~.of each repot, to Ben Tal ley and re,al.ned one copy of each~ attached~ for
our records.
