MPH-08a CTD Sidetrack Prep
FEB 2 ? 2001
Alaska Oil & Gas Cons. Commission
Anchorage
Well MPH-08a is scheduled for a multilateral sidetrack to be drilled with coiled
tubing. The following summarizes the procedure required to prep MPH-08a for
drilling and is submitted as an attachment to Form 10-403. A schematic diagram
of this proposed completion is attached,
Background
Nabors 4ES was unable to regain access to the existing horizontal wellbore (H-
08A) below 9126' DPM due to apparently collapsed 4 %" slotted liner. As such,
the plan is to set a cement plug to abandon the MPH-08A and then CTD drill
MPH-08B in the OA sand (replace MPH-08^) and MPH-08B L1 in the OB sand.
P&A Procedure
1. Set whipstock at 9110' in 4 %" slotted liner. - service coil
2. P&A H-08A by bullheading ~10 Bbls of 15.8 ppg class G cement from just
above whipstock. (The cement serves to plug off H-08A in the heel area to
reduce mud losses while drilling and to further anchor the whipstock). -
service coil
CTD Sidetrack Operations
3. MIRU CTD drilling rig. Test BOPs.
4. Mill window off whipstock at 9110'. Drill Schrader OA sand horizontal. Run
2 7/8" pre drilled liner.
5. Set whipstock at 9075' in 4 %" slotted liner.
6. Mill window off whipstock at 9075'. Drill Schrader OB sand horizontal. Run
2 7/8" pre drilled liner.
The P&A portion of this work is expected to begin 3/5/01. CTD sidetrack is
scheduled for mid March.

Mr. Wondzell,
Our completion plan for the subject well, H-08A, has changed from what I
stated on 7 January. We now plan to position the payzone packer (ECP) above
the open hole junction between the aborted first lateral and the recently
TD'd second lateral. This will effectively turn the well into a
multilateral in the Schrader Bluff 'OA' sands. Our hope is that both
laterals will contribute to the well's production. The well will be
completed with a jet pump as per our original permit application
I will fax you a hand sketch illustrating these plans.

The purpose of this email is to update you on progress on well MPH-O8A
(API# 50-029-22808-01; Permit # 199-22) and to obtain your approval for
our forward plans.
Progress to Date:
We have drilled the 6" lateral to a measured depth of ll,091-ft. There
have been no drilling problems, but geologic steering has been difficult
in the Schrader Bluff "OA" sands. We believe the hole drilled thus far
will access only a fraction of the reserves targeted, and we are
pessimistic that geosteering efficiency will improve in the remaining
1600-ft of hole. For this reason we plan a geologic sidetrack of the
well.
Sidetrack and Abandonment Plan:
We plan to low-side sidetrack the well in open hole. The sidetrack point
will be below the 7" whipstock and above the "OA" sand penetration depth.
This will be accomplished by "trenching" and time drilling. The original
sidetrack will be left open as we essentially twin the originally hole
lO-12-ft TVD deeper. After reaching TD, we will run and cement a 4-1/2"
liner into the new hole. This liner will be equipped with a payzone
packer (External Casing Packer) on the bottom and a liner top packer at
the top. These two packers and the cement will effectively isolate the
first sidetrack from the new wellbore. We currently plan to leave the
hole below the liner barefoot. The well will be completed with a jet pump
as per our original permit application.

Chuck,
Thanks for the information provided in our phone converation, this e-mail as
well as the faxed sketch.
Tom Maunder, Bob Crandall and I looked at all the information you provided. We
understand that the logs showed the redrill was in the top of the sand -
sometimes in and sometimes out - and that it cut at least three faults. Based on
this infromation your geolgists concluded that the current redrill should be
abandoned and a new horizontal wellbore segmaent drilled lower in the sand.
You proposed drilling a new horizontal wellbore in the same sand going to the
same bottomhole location as the one permitted, but approximately 12 feet lower -
the two could be in communication within the sand. You proposed that a solid
liner with ECP will be cemented from within the top of the new wellbore segment
into the original casing, approximately 150 feet above the top of the window.
Because of the mechanical problems you encountered in controlling the well path
and because the bottom hole location is not changing - you are only cutting a
new wellbore withing the permited sand at the permitted location, we concluded
that a new PTD is not necessary, neither is a 10-403. It comes under 20 AAC
25,005(e) straightening the wellbore. Therefore this e-mail correspondance will
be sufficient.
Sincerely, Blair Wondzell 7jan00.

Dear Mr. Mallar).::
Enclosed is the approved application for permit to redrill the above referenced well.
The permit to redrill does not exempt you from obtaining additional permits required by law from
other governmental agencies, and does not authorize conducting drilling operations until all other
required permitting determinations are made.
Blowout prevention equipment (BOPE) must be tested in accordance with 20 AAC 25 035.
Sufficient notice (approximately 24 hours) must be given to allow a representative of the
Commission to witness a test of BOPE installed prior to drilling new hole. Notice may be given
by contacting the Commission petroleum field inspector on the North Slope pager at 659-3607.

Well Control
a)
At the end of the 4-1/2" Bonzai liner procedure the well will be displaced over to 8.8 lb/gal
completion fluid. According to recent pressure data 8.8 lb/gal completion, fluid,s[~ould be .3 BP,g
.~verbalance. During and after displacement monitor the well closely to!¢~hS;U~:~ t~hat there is';.~-:;:'-¢
Kick tolerance
a)
The kick tolerance for the 6" open hole section is infinite assuming an influx at the 12,746'
TD in the Schrader OA formation. This is a worst case scenario based on a 8.8 ppg pore
pressure gradient in the top of the production section and a minimum fracture gradient of
12.5 ppg at the base window in the 7" casing with a 9.1 ppg mud in the hole.
b)
H-08 ran a single string of 7" casing to TD and cemented the casing to surface. The top of
the 13.1 lb/gal tail cement slurry is estimated to be 7500'.
Lost Circulation
a).
Earlier wells H-03 and H-05 experienced some lost circulation above the Schrader Bluff. The
other H pad wells did not experience lost circulation.
b)
Several minor faults are possible in the horizontal target interval. Maintain minimum ECD thru use
of proper hole cleaning procedures and PWD monitoring.
c)
Follow the LOST CIRCULATION DECISION MATRIX in the well plan if fluid losses occur while
drilling. Break circulation slowly in all instances and get up to recommended circulating rate slowly
prior to Cementing.
Unexpected ~High PreSsures
a)
It is unlikely there will be unexpected overpressure when drilling to the Schrader Bluff formation.
The original H-08 well had a reservoir pressure is 1,774 psi, 3,945'TVDss or 8.5 EMW. In this
well, the Schrader Bluff formation will be drilled with 9.1 ppg mud.
Stuck Pipe
a)
During the drilling phase of MPJ-01A we did not experience any stickiness while building angle
through the shaley clay !nterval of the Ugnu formation, however there were possible indications
that we experienced differential sticking while drilling horizontally in the OA sand interval.
b)
c)
Stuck Pipe: Go immediately to SURE manual, determine stuck pipe mechanism, follow
recommendations in the SURE manual. DO NOT JAR UP if packed-off!
There is a risk of differentially sticking the 4-1/2" liner. The 9.1 lb/gal mud will be 0.6 lb/gal
overbalanced to the 8.5 lb/gal OA sand reservoir pressure (125 psi differential pressure @
4,000' TVD). The liner should be kept moving as much as possible while running in the
open hole. The 5-1/2" casing on the J-151 well was just recently differentially stuck. We
previously encountered differentially sticking in the OA Sand interval while running in the
hole with the 4-1/2" liner on MPJ-01A, with 350 psi differential pressure and no
centralization. Moderate differential sticking was encountered while running the
centralized slotted liner on the MP J-09A well with 9.1 lb/gal mud and 300 psi differential
pressure.
d)
To reduce the risk of becoming differentially stuck with the 4-1/2" Bonzai liner, the BARADRILn
mud weight is programmed to be 9.1 ppg. This is 0.5 ppg lower than was run in the J-01A well
and will be accomplished by decreasing the calcium carbonate and KCI concentrations. No
compromise in well bore stability is anticipated as a result o. e density or KCI concentration
changes.

Pad Data Sheet
a) Please Read the H-Pad Data Sheet Thoroughly.
Breathing:
a) No breathing problems are expected drilling the Ugnu or the Schrader Bluff formations.
Hydrocarbons:
a) Will be kicking off in the Ugnu interval which is oil charged in this area, therefore the first possible
hydrocarbon zone will be the Ugnu formation just outside of the window
Geosteering: ~
a) -['wo rig site geologists are required onsite for accurate geosteering through the thin OA sands
b) It is critical that we achieve 100% in zone drilling of the OA Sand interval in order to obtain enough
pay sand to meet the oil rate production goals.
HES Cement Retainer:
a) The cement retainer was e-line set 3' below a 7" casing coupling. The window is planned to be
milled in the middle of a short 20' marker joint of 7" casing.
Hole Cleaning and Hole conditions:
a) This well has a 80° tangent angle above the planned kick off point. Good window milling and hole
cleaning practices will be critical in ensuring that metal and formation cuttings are removed from
the well.
b) Monitor metal cuttings returns to ensure that the metal is being effectively removed during and
after the milling job. While drilling, utilize PWD to monitor hole cleaning efficiency.
c) Monitor and record torque and drag data closely to check against modeling to help determine
what level of differential sticking or cuttings beds may be occurring during drilling to help make the
decision on running the 4-1/2" liner.
d) If the Bonzai ECP does not reach the programmed setting depth below the "N" sand, the well
could be in jeopardy from sand and water production. The final determination of w-~ether to run
the full Bonzai liner will be made based on hole conditions as the well reaches TD. For this
reason it is critical that the rig team effectively communicate all information about hole
conditions to Anchorage.
Hydrogen Sulfide
a) MP H Pad is not designated as an H2S Pad.
