Your letter of April 21 was received in this office on April 23. The next day, Newmont's Vice President, E. D. With reference to the wildlife stipulation, s':contained in Mr. Wienhold's memorandum to you dated April 16, we are making earnest efforts to comply and have passed on copies of your letter to Colorado Oil and Gas Corporation, the drilling contractor, and to Texaco, Inc. As Mr. Whitis has advised Mr. Wienhold, we believe compliance with stipulations 1 through 5 can be achieved~ but we have some concern as to the May 1 date for item 6 with respect to construction of an airstrip on a gravel bar along the east bank of the Kuparuk River. Base facilities to support work at the subject location will be available in approximately ten days and the required survey by a registered land surveyor will be made at that time under the supervision of Colorado Oil & Gas Corporation, as Drilling Contractor. Survey plat will be promptly supplied to you and to the U.S. Geological Survey by the contractor. We are also attaching to the application a plat of the proposed East Kuparuk Unit, showing the location of the No. 1 well with respect to such unit.. If you have any questions concerning this matter, we would appreciate your telephoning us immediately collect. Very truly you rs, Robert S. Moehlman Pres i dent RSM:ajg Enclosures cc: Mr. W. J. Burrell The operator should be advised to use a cement for the 9 5f8" casing which will set up under permafrost conditions. Our in~ormation indicates that the heat of hydration from Portland cement will melt the permafrost and a satisfactory job cannot be obtained. There are two types of cement avail'able which can be used satisfactorily in the permafrost. We suggest that you contact your cememter and determine the merits of the 1°w temperature setting cements as opposed to the Portland cement which you have proposed. .. Please note a typographical error in the original application under Item 4. "T2N" should r.ea~d "T2~to conform with the plats and the March 13 le~,ttal~7. Since submitting the original application, the casing program has been modified to allow setting a protection string if required. We are planning to transport 4500 feet of 7-inch casing to the job before rotary drilling commences to give us greater security and elasticity in the drilling operations, as follows: 2,000 feet - N-80 38# 2,50.0 feet- d-55 23#. ~G~NERA~_ PROGRAM~. DRILL.lNG, C.ASING,_~a.~d_ MUD 1. The well will be spudded by Colorado Oil and Gas Corporation as drilling contractor with a Bucyrus Erie cable tool rig with a 45-foot mast. 2. A 16-inch hole will be drilled to approximately 50 feet and fifty feet of 13-3/8-inch conductor pipe will be driven. A Texas pattern shoe will be used with all joints spot welded. 3. The cable tool rig will drill 12-1/4-inch hole to 1,050 feet, using cold salt brine. 4. Surface string of casing will be set to'bottom - 9-5/8-inch OD j~ J-55 38#. In running the surface pipe to approximately 1~050 feet~ a float shoe and float collar will be used and the bottom two joints will be spot welded in addition to the float collar and float shoe. Three centralizers are to be used on the 9-5/8-inch surface pipe. 5. The surface string will be cemented with 300 sacks of Portland cement pre-mixed to 3% Bentonite by weight. No CaCl.will be placed in the initial 250 sacks used, but 2% CaC1 will be added to the last 50 sacks of cement pumped around the casing. If the cement fails to circulate, the casing will be cemented around the outside with 1-inch stinger~ using enough cement to'bring the cement to surface. 6. During cable tool drilling operations~ a Cardwell rotary rig will be moved on location~ with a string of 3-1/2-inch drill pipe. i', 7. After 9-5/8" casing has been set and cemented and without suspension of operations~ rotary drilling will be commenced. After the surface pipe plug has been drilled~ t'he system will be converted to an oil emulsion using 5-10 % topped Umiat crude or diesel oil along with bentonite and fresh water to make an adequate mud for drilling purposes. Quebracho caustic soda and driscose will be used for stabilizing the mud system and keeping the water loss at a proper level. · Weight materials.will be available but will not be used unless drilling conditions are encountered which require weighted mud. A mud engineer will be at the location when required and he will have a more detailed mud program. 8. Then 8-1/2-inch hole will be drilled to approximately 4500 feet. 9. At 4500 feet if indicated by hole conditions or shows~ a) Protection string of the 7-inch OD casing will be run and cemented wi th 250 sacks of cement wi th 3% bentonite by weight. b) Afterwards, drilling will be continued with 5-3/4-inch hole to 7~000 feet total depth. ¢) Then~ if shows warrant~4-1/2-inch X-line liner will be run to a depth sufficient to test the shows between 4500 feet and the prospective interval. 10. At 4500 feet, if setting of the string of 7-inch is not required~ the 8-1/2-inch hole will be drilled to a total depth of 7~000 feet and 5-1/2-inch casing can be run for testing if required. EVALUATION OF THE WEL,~L 1. The principal format'ion tops or zones of prospective sands are estimated at the following depths for the East Kuparuk Unit No. 1 well: Uppe.r., ,Cre ta ceou s Barrow Trail Zone of prospective sands Tuluvak: Top at Zone of prospective sands Ninuluk - Top at 1350-1600 feet 3800 feet 4000-4200 feet 6000 feet Lo~w~e r ~C reta ce o.,u,..s Grand Stand - Top at 6500 feet. 2. In cable tool operations, samples will be taken at intervals of l0 to 20 feet depending on runs of the bailer. Fluoroscopic examination will be made of the cuttings. In effect, the cable tool should give a continuous open hole drillstem test. A mud logging unit is to be moved to the location prior to spudd i ng. 3. After rotary drilling commences, the mud logging unit will be in cont i nuous ope rat ion. 4. Conventional core barrel will be on location and cores will be taken as directed by Operator's geologist. 5. It is presently planned to run Schlumberge. r logs covering the following intervals: From base of surface to surface: Gamma-ray/Neutron Log (if not previously logged in the open hole). b) From base of surface casing to total depth: i) Induction electric Log ii) Borehole Compensated Sonic Log-Caliper iii) Formation Density Log iv) Sidewall Neutron Porosity Log v) Continuous Dipmeter. All runs to be on scales of 2" equal 100' and 5" equal 100'. All the logs to be forwarded for Synergetic presentation. A Wireline Formation tester and sidewall coring equipment will be used if required by Operator's geologist. 6. Arrangements will be made for open hole testing as may be directed by Operator's geologist. BLOWOUT PREVENTERS Blowout preventers (double ram Shaffer and Hydril KG) shall be installed prior to drilling the plug after the 9-5/8" surface casing has been set. The blowout preventers are to be tested daily. NOTE The above well program sets forth Operator's present plans for the well, which are necessarily subject to modification as required by con- ditions encountered in drillin9.
