Re: Request for Gas -Only Certification for Kahiltna Prospect
Dear Mr. Cataldi:

AOGCC
Cook Inlet Energy currently plans on drilling a gas exploration well west of Trapper Creek,
approximately 1.3 miles north of the old Kahiltna River No. 1 well. The latitude and longitude
of the Kahiltna No. 2 well is proposed to be 62° 3' 32" North, 150° 46' 54" West. The Kahiltna
No. 2 well will be drilled to a maximum depth of 7,500' true vertical depth and will penetrate
into the Chickaloon Formation.
This structure was previously drilled to a depth of 7,265' without encountering any evidence of
oil shows or liquid hydrocarbons. CIE believes it improbable that a liquid hydrocarbon system
exists in the Susitna Basin, and is particularly confident in the absence of liquid hydrocarbons in
the Kahiltna structure, since it has been previously drilled. Please see the attached geological
review of wells that have been drilled into this basin.
Cook Inlet Energy believes that there is no appreciable risk of encountering liquids as part of this
drilling, and hereby requests that AEDC make the determination that the Kahiltna prospect is
exempt under AS 46.04.030(c) from the requirement to submit an oil discharge prevention and
contingency plan and proof of financial responsibility, since the well will not penetrate a
formation capable of flowing oil to the ground surface.
Please contact Ae At (907) 433-3805 or jr.wilcox(&cookinlet.net if there is any further

The section drilled in each well was predominantly Tyonek with some shallower formations, probably
equivalent to the Beluga and/or Sterling Formations. The deepest well drilled encountered
predominantly Tyonek Formation with some pre-Tyonek (probably Chickaloon Fm. Equivalent). The
Tyonek section is a series of meandering and anastomozing stream channels with sandstones,
interbedded siltstones and claystones with interbedded coals. The coals are thin and any gas seen is
biogenic gas generated from the coals and is not associated with any liquid hydrocarbons. The Tyonek,
Beluga and Sterling are all gas prone formations. Liquid hydrocarbons are only encountered in the
lowermost Tyonek (G -Zone) section a considerable distance to the south in Cook Inlet.
The disposition of each well surrounding the proposed Kahiltna 2 location is listed above. In each case it
was determined from mudlog and wireline logs that no liquid hydrocarbon was encountered. The
deepest well, Trail Ridge U-1 well, was drilled to a depth of 13,707' to the south-west of the Kahiltna 2
location and was a dry hole. It did not encounter any oil shows or liquid hydrocarbons or encounter any
appreciable gas shows on the mudlog while drilling. Each of the other wells that have wireline and/or
mud logs encountered only minor gas shows while drilling.
The Kahiltna River 1 well, 1.3 miles to the south of the Kahiltna 2 location, drilled a section of gravels
from the surface to a depth of approximately 500'. It then drilled approximately 2400' of sand, with only
background gas, before encountering 3 thick coals at 2900', 3000' and 3200'. These coals did not
encounter any gas while drilling and should act as a seal for potential gas below. Gas readings remained
very low with no shows until coals encountered at 4430' were drilled. The coals in the remainder of the
well down to 7265' only displayed a coal gas signature with no oil shows, fluorescence or cut. The
Kahiltna 1 well drilled a section believed to be Chickaloon Fm. at the TD of the well.

SUBJECT= Site Abandonment Inspection -
Inlet Oil Con, any Fish Creek No. 1
The above location was inspected on April 4, 1969, for final abandonment clean-
up approval. Travel was by company charter helicopter. Mr. Winhold of the
Department of Fish and Game accompanied me.
The location was properly marked with standard pipe, except the footage from
section lines was not noted.
Both mouse and rat holes were open on arrival but were filled in before I
left the location. The dirt contractor had moved a large portion of the
downed timber, brushs and forest duff to the edge of the bank above Fish
Creek,
Mr. Winhold strongly objected to having this material on the edge of the
creek bank, which was some distance (approximately 150 feet) below the
edge of the bank. His objection was that it could cause silt to work into
the creek. This did not appear to be as large a potential silting problem
as provided by the road leading from the location to the creek. The dirt
contractor a~reed to provide terracing and brush cover for the roadway but
stated that it was nearly impossible to remove the other material ,from the
top of the bank.
Because the location was cleaned to my Satisfaction, I advised the contractor
that no more work would be necessary and Mr. Winhold told the contractor
that he could move his equipment out that evening.
The various aspects of this clean-up were discussed quite fully with Mr.
Winhold but he remained adamant that he, personally, would not approve the
location abandonment under Fish and Game Department stipulations.
It is recommended that the Division of Oil and Gas approve the clean-up as
it now is.

Drillin~ Time
Copies of the geolograph charts are enclosed. There were
several errors and corrections made during drilling operations.
These are of course reflected on the charts and it is difficult
to illustrate exactly, the drilling time opposite the sand and
clay members on the enclosed stratigraphic log.
As a result the following charts will serve mainly to dam=
onstrate the slow drilling in the weathered and fresh granite
as opposed to the fast drilling in the overlying sands and clay
intervals,

Geological Di.scussion
Subject well spudded in Tertiary Sediments, remainin8 in the
Tertiary to a depth of 1800 feet where Weathered basement was en-
countered.
The Tertiary consisted of alternatins streaks of very soft
soluble to slishtly Sun,ny, gray clay and sandstone. The sandstones
ransed from well cemented varyins grain sized to unconsolidated pebb-
les and sravels. Most of the sandstones were arkosic and/or conslo-
meratic. There were no shows of oil or Sas encountered in any of
the sandstones.
Frequent ltsnite and coal streaks were interlaminated with the
clays and sandstones.
Below the Weathered Basement, fresh biotite sranite was found at
1830 feet and continued to the total depth. A bottom hole core was
taken which confirmed the findtnss in the drill cuttinss.
Co.nclusions
_
As' mentioned above there were no oil or 8as shows associated with
any of the sandstones,
Subject test well was bottomed at 203§ feet after penetratins 20§
feet of fresh tsneous basement.
As a result of the above, the hole was plussed and'abandoned in
accordance with the Alaska State rules and resulstions.
