Hi Judd and Deborah,
Gas results came back with the following composition:
67 percent methane
26 percent nitrogen
7 percent oxygen
The lab report stated the following: "The chemical and isotopic composition
of the sample indicate that the methane was formed by bacterial
decomposition of organic matter via the carbon dioxide reduction metabolic
pathway. It is quite clearly not thermogenic in origin" Not thermogenic
simply means that the gas was not formed during the high temperature and
pressure processes that form natural gas.

James,
Please note the attached field inspection report.
Deborah says the site was clean, there was a wood cellar containing
water in which there were bubbles. No sheen was observed. She didn' t
know if the bubbles were gas or air.
Please acknowledge and advise as to your course of action.

Blair Wondzell;
I have been checkin9 inactive reserve pits with the Dept. of Environmental
Conservation. On September 17, 1997, we did a field examination of
Johnson Slough #1,
API number 1332017000
Permit to Drill number 6900050
Lease ADL# 17797
This well was plugged and abandoned on February 17, 1969.
It is a Shell Oil well site in Section 36, T8N, R16W, SM in the Redoubt Bay
area on USGS Quadrangle Kenai C-6.
When I visited the site on September 17, 1997, I saw gas bubbling up around
the well head marker. Apparently the cement job was not adequate.
There is a wood plank enclosure around the well cellar.
On September 17, 1997, there was water standing within the wood plank enclosed
well cellar. The gas was bubbling up through the water around the well head
marker.
Please send me copies of any findings your field person makes or any
corrections required of Shell Oil.
Thank-You,
Deborah Heebner

SUBJECT: Johnson Slough No. l
Shell Oil Company, Operator
The Johnson Slough No. 1 well is within the area that the Department of
Fish and Game has requested be transferred to it for management under an
ILMT. The request is still awaiting the signature of your Commissioner.
The prima~y use of the Area requested is wildlife oriented. It is important
that the following restrictions be strictly adhered to:
1. Prior to drilling, a ring dike will be constructed around the
drilling area to contain any spills that might occur. The
dike will be lined so that it'is impervious to petroleum.
2. Prior to the beginning of drilling, a sump of sufficient size to
contain all waste fluids will be constructed. This sump will
also be made impervious to petroleum products.
3. Prior to the abandonment of the site, the sump must be cleared of
all oil, and be covered.
4. The operator must dispose of all refuse, including, but not
limited to: pallet boards, garb.a~je, visqueen, sacks, barrels,
etc. by burning and burying 'in a sanitary fill facility.
