Dear Bob:
Receipt is-ack~.ow~edged for the respective thin sections, palynolo§ical
slides, foraminiferal.slides and residues prepared from samples and cores
of the following wells in fulfillment of the February 28, 1979 and April
19, 1979 letters of understanding to you and the April 30, 1979 letter to
Dick Stewart:
ARCO Sag River tl
ARCO Prudhoe Bay St. ~1

Two sets of the thin sections and palynological slides were received, as
per our agreement.
It is presumed that inasmuch as no thin sections from the ARCO Put River
~I were received, the approximate 20' of Lisburne carborate penetrated
Within the 9810' - 9903' interval that you sampled was considered
insufficient to.warrant preparation of a thin section.
The slides and thin sections have now been placed in the State's public
library of specially prepared well materials. A copy of the June 1, 1979
inventory of special materials is enclosed for your reference. Please
refer to the June and July issues of the Commission's Bulletin for. .~

additions to this inventory.
Your prompt preparation and return of the materials prior to our agreed
7/1/79 date reflects well on your, Jim Hiller's, Bill-Reay'$, and
Dick Stewart's attitude of fairness to others in the geologic profession
and contributes to the mutual beneficial aspects of the slide preparation
program. We look' forvard to the possibility of making additional slide

Ret Acquisition of Drill
Cuttings and Core Chips for
Preparation of Thin Sections
and Paleontologic Slides
Dear Bob:
In response to our discussions this reek, permission is hereby granted
to Union Oil Company to make small quantity cuts (approximately one
cc. maximum each)'"'from the State's set of samples and cores of the
following wells 'f~r'the purpose of preparing thin sections,
foramlniferal slides, palynologic slides and kerogen slides, subject
to the conditions set forth below:
Set Ilo. Well
''-334 .... 'H6'bll G~ydyr Bay So. #1 (8-12-13) 10,020- 12,237
223 Hobil. W. Kuparuk River 3-!!~il' 8,700- 11,532
322 ~xon Canning River 'Unit ~A-I (.19-~-24) 4,300 - 8,874
Cuts are to. be made only from those intervals in which the volume of
cuttings or core material in the State library sample is greater than
10 cc. No cuts are to be extracted if the volume of material in the
_State set is less than 10 cc. Union will provide the State with a
list of the specific sample and core footages sampled. Union shall
assume all costs entailed and will provide the Alaska Oil and Gas
Conservation Co~u~ission with two co~plete sets of all thin sections
and slides prepared and return all remaining sample and core residues,
All thin sections and slides prepared from these cuts are to be
received by the Commission no later than July 1, 1979.
We are pleased to work with you in this mutually beneficial endeavor
and look forvard to your company's, continued exercise of care and good
Judgement in the handling of 'this well material, as evidenced in the
sample processing arrangements you have undertaken with the State in
the past.
Very truly yours~

SUBJECT: Abandoned Location Inspection,
Mobil, North Slope, Alaska
?
Friday August 29, 1975 - Left Anchorage at 8:30 AM via Wien. Arrived .at
'ARCO strip ~t IO:05'~AM". Met Barry Wood, Mobil helicopter pilot, who flew
me to the Mobil camp. The purpose of my trip was to inspect abandoned
locations of three Mobil wells:
1. North Kuparuk No. 26-12-12
2. Kadler State No.15-9-16
3. West Staines State No. 18-9-23'
I arrived at the Mobil camp at 10:45 AM. Here I met Bud Abrams, Mobil
Drilling Supervisor. We talked briefly about abandoned location markers.
He showed me one at the base camp location. Instead of welding the infor-
mation directly to the marker pipe, he had made a flag out of quarter inch
steel plate and had welded.the well information on this and then welded it
to~the marker. I told Bud that I would check with the office to see if this
was satisfactory. ~We then flew to the North Kuparuk location (Photos ND.l-
No. 6). The well cellar had not been filled and the marker had been placed
to the side of the w6~l. I told Bud that the regulations require the marker
to be attached direct~,j~ to the wellhead in sOme manner. He made a note to
correct the Well marke~s. There were also some piles of metal and debris on
and off the pad. The'reserve pit and the sewage pit had not been backftlled.
When I told him they would have to be backfilled he was puzzled. Somewhere
along the line he had been informed that the older locations on the Slope
did not have to backfill their pits. I told him., I hadn't heard anything to
that effect but would check with the office when we returned to the camp.
I called Anchorage about 11:30 AM and talked with Lonnie Smith. He told me
the well marker information had to be bead welded to the pipe and the flag
·
was not acceptable. In regard to the pits it was decided to check on past
inspections and make a decision on the results sometime next week. Bud
agreed to this and the subject was referred to Fritz Schall, Mobil Drilling
Superintendent.
Bud and I went to the Kadler State well after lunch (Photos No.7-No.12).
The pad was clean and the leveling was rough but acceptable. The reserve
pit was not filled and the abandoned location marker was not yet in place,
We returned to the Mobil camp since the weather would not permit us to go to
the West Statnes location.

September 5, 1975
I filled out a Field Inspection Report for Bud and will send a copy to
Mobil in Anchorage (a copy is attached). I told Bud that I would call him
back Tuesday (September 2, 1975) and tell him of'any developments concerning
the pits. I returned to Anchorage on the 5:15 PM Wien flight.
· In summary, I made preliminary inspections of Mobil's North Kuparuk N0.26-12-12
and Kadler State No. 15-9-16 abandoned locations. Final inspection is pending
a decision by the Division concerning backfilling of reserve pits.
On ~ednesday September 3, 1975 Hoyle Hamilton called Fritz Schall to inform
him that the State would require all pits to be backfilled before any aban-
doned location can be approved.
