Dear Mr. Burrell ·
This letter is written in response to your letter to
Shell Oil Company, dated June 26, 1972, in regard to the
status of We~t..Forelands Unit Well No. 4. This well was
drilled on Lease No. ADL 187S8. 'b~ November 3, 1967,
Shell's interest in this 1.ease was assigned to Atlantic
Richfield Company; and so we are responding to your
inquiry regarding the status of the well.
West Forelands Unit No. 4 was completed on November 6,
1966, as an ocean floor completion. The well encountered
no commercial hydrocarbon pay zones. The completion was
classified with the State as suspended with SO sack
cement plugs set at 83S0', 2S00', and 6S0'. A DC retainer
was set at..~O-'~,
Atlantic Richfield Company has no future plans to re-enter'"',
this well for any reason. Therefore, it would be appro-
priate to reclassify the completion status of this well
as abandoned. The appropriate paper work to accomplish
this will be submitted in the near future. _..~-
.
Very truly Yours,
Howard A. Slack

SUBJECT: 2nd production test on Shell's

CONFIDENTIAL
On October 29 I proceeded to the drilling ship Glo. mr II via PNA to Kenai,
car to Heliport and helicopter to the rig. Condition of the hole was the
same as on the previous test except that a plug had been placed above the
previously tested perforations amd the 7" perforated from 9090' to 9132'.
This sand was then tested with a Halliburton tester with packer set at 9042'.
It took ll hours for fluid to reach the surface and the flow varied from 3.6
to 5.6 bbls (86 to 154 bbls/day) per hour and wet gravities ranged from 12.6°
AP1 to 30.0° APl.
The,~ test was completed early Monday morning, 10-31-66~ but high winds up to
65 miles per hour caused dama§e to the casing riser and prevented pulling out
the tester until after repairs could be made on the next low tide. Also
prevented my return because helicopter flights were impossible until the storm
subsided.

SUBJECT: Field Trip to Shell West
Foreland Unit ~4
On October 24, 1966, I went to Kenai via PNA leaving Anchorage 7:18 a.m. and
thence to ~lomar II ship by helicopter. Left shore north of Standard loading
dock and flew directly across. Saw no signs of any oil or oil slicks on surface
of the Inlet but did notice considerable stea~ arising from the water around a
tanker that was moored to the dock. The steaming area covered possibly one to
two acres. The temperature at Kenai had been four below zero so the steam could
have been caused by the tankerpumping water ballast into the Inlet. However,
there was no oil or oil slick apparent at the time either there or any place on
our course.
That afternoon, a radio conversation between the Shell platform and their
shore facilities indicated concern over a possible pipeline break about a mile
offshore from the facility. A slick was noted there and also a pressure drop
at the platform end of the pipeline. Later tests showed a leak in the shore
end valve and also a leakage at the platform from the Shell line to that being
used by Pan American. There was still no accounting for the oil slick, however.
The only oil in the Inlet noted by the writer was a possible gallon or two
of heavy black oil near the test barge and the next day a narrow slick moving
north from a little (one or two gallons) live oil spilled in trying to get a
sample from a bleeder valve in the flow line. After the test, the oil in the
drill pipe was circulated out and into the barge. None went into the Inlet.

On October 24, 1966, I left Anchorage by PNA at 7:18 a.m. for Kenai then
to the above well by helicopter. The first test of the interval 9238'-9302'
was unsuccessful due to' the circulating valve leaking while running in.
The second test, on the following day, was normal but, while the oil reached
the surface after 25 1/4 hours, it would not flow and the test was discontinued
at 3:35 p.m. and the tool closed for a final shut-in pressure. Flow lines and
fill-up line froze and the rest of the afternoon was spent in thawing lines.
Pulled packer loose and started out of hole at 8:11 p.m. On top at 11:45 p.m.
As the company planned to set a plug above these perforations, run in and
condition mud, then rerun the C.B.L, before perforating the next zone and running
in to test it, I returned to Anchorage early on October 26, 1966. Further testing
has been postponed because of high winds in the Inlet.
