Interesting that on the well sketch that the original TOC for the 13-3/8" remedial cement job was estimated around 460'. The pressure decline does not appear to indicate a "large" leak. I agree that communication through the cement you have placed is unlikely. Good luck with the work. As usual, keep us informed regarding the operations. Tom Maunder, PE AOGCC Eller, Gary wrote, On 9/13/2005 1 :05 PM: Tom - We pumped cement into well Ba-501 on September 8, 2005 as per sundry approval #305-255. The operation went exactly as planned, however we are unable to get a pressure test on the 130/8" casing. Pressure bleeds from 1000 psi to 750 psi in 30 minutes. I suspect a casing leak above the top of cement at ±460' MD. It is inconceivable that there is a gas channel past 300' of cement and a solid 13%" wiper plug. The attached schematic shows the Ba-50 1 wellbore as it exists today. Chevron proposes to use 2Y8" tubing to spot a 120' balanced plug (i.e. 18.6 bbl) on top of the existing cement. This will put the new top of cement at ±340' MD. Since the mud line is at 180' MD, this proposal leaves sufficient room for eventual surface abandonment operations in well Ba-501. Chevron will retest the 13%" casing to 1000 psi following this second stage cementing operation. If the 130/8" casing still fails to test then it will certainly be due to a shallow leak in the 13%" casing, and Chevron will deal with that when the final surface abandonment of well Ba-501 is performed. «8a-501 Actual schematic 09-13-2005.xls» J. Operations were conducted periodically to get the well producing consistently, but by May 1967 the well was permanently idled. Records show that the well is perforated as shallow as 807' in 13%" casing and that a 5" gravel pack assembly was run from 764' - 1219':MD. The well has been known to produce gas along with fresh water from the very earliest well test reports. The well is not equipped with tubing or a Christmas tree. Well Ba-501 was discovered to have 160 psi of gas pressure on the 130/8" casing on July 16, 2005. The 13%" casing pressure was bled off but the well continues to provide a slight blow of gas. The pressure on the 20" casing is 40 psi, which has remained unchanged while bleeding down the 130/8" casing. Objectives: 1. Isolate all freshwater-bearing zones as per 20 AAC 25.112(c)(I)(C) 2. Test the cement plug to verify zonal isolation and 130/8" casing integrity as per 20 AAC 25.112(g) 3. Fill the wellbore with kill-weight fluid as per 20 AAC 25.112(f) Procedure: 1. Bullhead sufficient fluid into well Ba-50l to kill the well. Do not exceed 500 psi pump pressure during kill operation. Monitor pressure on the 20" casing during the kill operation. 2. Prepare to ND the 13%", 3m threaded flange. Prior to ND the flange, have the 130/8", 3M tubing spool with R-57 rubber-coated ring gasket ready to install. ND the existing 13%", 3M threaded flange. Inspect the flange face on the OCT casing spool. 3. Install a Halliburton top wiper plug for 13%", 54.5 ppf casing into the top of the 13%" casing stub. If unable to install the wiper plug, contact Drilling Superintendent and proceed with the next step. 4. NU a 13%", 3M tubing head, tubing head adaptor, and a 7", 5M gate valve. The minimum restriction through this assembly will be the tubing head with an ID = 60/8". Use a rubber-coated R-57 ring gasket to ensure an adequate pressure seal after NU the tubing spool. (Note: If the ring groove in the casing spool is badly deteriorated, can optionally use a Flexitalic gasket to get a seal instead of a ring Ba-501 Plugging Procedure August 30, 2005 Well Ba-501 W-ell Plugging Procedure AFE 164_ Page 2 gasket. Recommend first using the rubber-coated ring gasket to see if an adequate pressure seal can be obtained.) Also replace valves on the 2" side outlets if needed. 5. Prepare to pump 47 bbl of 14.5 ppg cement to abandon all open perfs. This is sufficient volume to fill 304' of 130/8" casing in well Ba-501. Will bullhead cement down the 13%" casing while blending cement on the fly. Notify AOGCC with 24-hou~,notice of planned plugging operations. 6. BUllhea6bbl of cement into well Ba-501 at a rate that will minimize pumping pressure.·, Maximum allowable pump pressure = 500 psi. If pump pressure exceeds 500 psi try reducing the rate or cut to displacement. Displace with 56 bbl of seawater so that the wiper plug reaches 700' MD. Strap the displacement tank to ensure an accurate displacement volume if the well is on vacuum during displacement. If the plug bumps do not exceed 700 psi pump pressure, but ideally the plug will not bump into the gravel pack completion at ±764' MD. (Note: Calculated displacement volume is based on the casing head being at an elevation of ±45' above MSL versus original RKB of 78' above MSL. If the cement job is cut short, adjust displacement volume so that a total of 103 bbl of cement and seawater are pumped behind the wiper plug.) 7. Wait on cement a minimum of 24 hours. (Note: Confirm cement set time from Schlumberger lab analysis.) Monitor the pressure on Ba-501. RD cementing equipment. 8. Notify AOGCC with 24-hour notice of planned pressure test. Pressure test 130/8" casing to 1000 psi. Contact Project Manager if it fails to pressure test. Secure well. 9. MURU slickline on well Ba-501. Pressure test lubricator and conduct pre-job safety meeting. RIH with a gauge ring. Tag top of cement while AOGCC rep witnesses. POOH, RDMO slickline. Unocal proposes to abandon the perforations with cement and leave kill weight fluid in the well bore in accordance with AOGCC Regulation 20 MC 25.112( c). '" Notice in step #9 that Unocal is requesting that the cement plug in Baker well #501 be tested to 1000 psi instead of the 1500 psi specified in 20 MC 25.112(g)(2). Although a 1500 psi test equates to just 55% of the API minimum yield stress for 13%", 54.4 ppf, K-55 casing, Unocal / has concerns about the condition of the 13%" casing in well #501. Documentation of this 1966 vintage service well is poor, and there has apparently been no downhole activity since 1968. It is Unocal's opinion that increasing the 13%" casing test pressure from 1000 to 1500 psi offers r-'" no material benefit while increasing the risk of a shallow casing failure. 1/2.(¡'J The Baker well #501 attachments include: . 10-403 requesting plugging of the perforations, · Procedure for plugging the perforations, . R. Marshall, Jr. RECFIVFD JAN 19 196 I~IVI$1ON O~ MINE.,?, & MINERAL~ ANCHORAGE Gentlemen: This will refer to our Form P-1 requesting Permit to Drill the MGS State 17595 Well No. 601 which was to be located in Sec. 31, T9N, R12W, SM, as approved by yourself on December 24, 1965. Pan American has changed its plans and will be drilling a water well from Conductor 8, Leg 2, of its MGS Platform B. We in- tend to drill MGS State 17595 No. 601 at a subsequent date from a different slot; and at such time, we will inform you of this change. In the meantime, we ask that the Form P-1 as approved by you on December 24, 1965, remain active fora short period of time until all of our plans are finalized with respect to drilling the well for which the application was submitted. Since a water well does not need a permit, this action is being taken.
