January 23, 1967 Placid Oil Company Hunt Petroleum Corporation 1401 Elm Dallas I, Texss DECIS ION : : : : : : ANCHORAGE Oil and Gas ADL 17580 Extension of Lease Term by Drilling Reco~n. ized On November 21, 1966, Placid Oil Company filed a letter stating the circumstances relative to the drilling of a well in SW%NW~ of Section 3, Township 9 North, Range 12 West, Seward Meridian. The facts and circumstances of this case indicate that the lessees did commence, or cause to co..~.~nence, drilling a well on the lease on September 5, 1966, and pursued drilling operations with reasonable diligence until icing conditions in Cook Inlet forced the stoppage of drilling operations. The facts also indicate that the lessee could have reasonably expected to complete a well on a formation capable of produc- ing hydrocarbons in paying quantities prior to the depth of 12,405 feet at which depth the well was suspended. Thus, the Director finds that applicants aave continued drill- ing operations on the subject well with all reasona01e d~ligence and will continue to be so considered if they continue drilling on the well at the beginning of the 1967 drilling season as soon as is reasonably oossible, if said well results in the oroduction of oil and/or gas in paying quantities, lease ADL 17580 shall remain in force and effect as long as oil or gas is produced therefrom. Pedro Den ton Gentlemen: State of Alaska Lease ADL 17580 _ Please refer to Lease ADL 17580, dated March 1, 1962~ between the State of Alaska and H. L. Hunt~ and particularly to paragraph 27 thereof~ which lease is now owned by Placid Oi]~ C<'~]pany and Hunt Petroleum Corporation. On September 5, 1966, we spudded our State Lease 17580 No. 1Well~ located in the Southwest Quarter of Northwest Quarter of Section 3, Township 9 North~ Range 12 West, Seward Meridian. Since that date, we have been drilling with all due diligence in a good faith effort to evaluate all known zones in the Ter%iary~ in the Cook Inlet Area~ which are cap- able of producing oil and/or gas. We have now suspended exploration operations after drilling to a depth of 12~405 feet~ but because conditions beyond our control have been encountered~ as hereinafter men%ioned~ we have not been able to reach our objective depth at this time. Due to the severe weather conditions, which now exist in the area~ such as icing and large accumulations of floe ice in the waters around our rig, we have been forced to suspend drilling operations as of the 21st day of November, 1966, for the winter before fully evaluating all prospective producing horizons underlying the subject lease. To continue drilling at ~his time under such conditions would jeopardize the lives of all our employees and WOuld involve a tremendous risk of the loss of our rig and equipment° REC.F.
