Dear MS~? Cha~:
·
This'is ~"'
pursUant to and in confirmation of your July 23, 1980
discussion with Harry Kugler and John Levorsen at this office
concerning Marathon's Preparation of petrographic thin sections
of samples from the designated intervals in the following
wells:
Sample
Set No. Well Interval
46
Chevron Beluga Riv.#l (212-35) 15,880-90
89 Shell MGS ~ ~-43-11 9,710 70

It is understood that Marathon will bear all costs entailed and
will Provide the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission with
all thin sections prepared and return all remaining sample and
core residues. No thin section or sample material is to be
retained by .Marathon. All thin sections and remaining sample
material are to. be received by the Commission by January 1;
1981. All materials are to be transmitted to the Commission and
are not to be examined by other parties. -
Please 'understand that the State's well sample library is public
property and that granting Marathon permission to extract por-
tions of material from the library for the purpose of providing
the indicated slides enhances the value of the library and is in
the public interest.

Dear. Mr. Marshall:
Enclosed are the results of our analyses of samples from the following
wells, furn±shed to us by your off±ce.
Standard Oil Company of California
North Fork Unit 41- 35
Sec. 35, T45~ R14W SM
-S'tandard Oil Company of California
Pein
S ~ R15W SM
Our general interpretation of these analyses is that both sections are
thermally immature with respect to liquid petroleum hydrocarbon generation.
In addition, the organic matter in most of the sediments analyzed does not
yield a significant amount of hydrocarbons upon pyrolysis (Pyrolytic HC/
Organic Carbon < 20%), suggesting that the sediments are not potential
oil source rocks. An exception to this generally unfavorable oil source
potential is the deeper part of the North Fork section (i.e., from 11,900
to 12,500 feet). Samples from this interval have very good organic richness
(~-2% organic carbon) and undergo relatively high conversion of organic
matter to hydrocarbons upon pyrolysiS (pyrolytic HC/Organic Carbon > 40%).
The organic matter in theSe sediments is, however, thermally immature a__t
this' locality~ and would appear to require further burial metamorphism
equivalent to about five thousand feet of additional overburden to be
considered effective oil source rocks.
The organic-rich (dominantly coaly) Tertiary section is known to be
productive of gas. Our investigations are primarily aimed at evaluation
of oil source potential.
