DATE : July 15, 1966
SUBJECT: Field Trip to Oldmans Bay ~1,
Hunt Oil Company, Operator
I left Anchorage International Airport via Cessna 180 chartered by Hunt
Oil C~mpany and flew to Kenai and changed to helicopter for the trip to Kalgin
Island with Bill VanAllen, Hunt Oil Company geologist. I inspected blowout
preventer equipment, including accumulators and remote control valves, but did
not request actual closing pressure tests because the bit was at the bottom of
the hole and a trip was aot likely for six or seven hours. Their drilling report
book indicated equipment tested at 5,000 pounds working pressure at 7,415' drilling
depth. The present depth as of yesterday was 10,130'. The stack consisted of
two Type "U" 10,000 pound working pressure rams and a GK 14 5,000 pound Hydril
bag.
Complaints had been made to Fish and Game by Kalgin Island fishermen that
garbage and trash from this drilling operation were fouling their nets. This
complaint seemed warranted to me judging from the debris I found scattered on
the beach. The operator has now dug a deep garbage pit and is using it for the
disposal of garbage and all other types of rig trash.
We had also received an oral complaint from Shell Oil Company that a reserve
mud pit at this operation was periodically flooded by high tides and partly
drained on the ebbing tide. This condition resulted from the fact that cuttings
drop from the shale shaker and desander over the shoreward side of the vessel
and accumulate there because tidal action throws up a sand bar at each end of
the vessel, thereby forming a shallow reservoir. This in no sense is a mud
reserve pit and contains no oil of any kind. No oil is used in the drilling
mud at this operation and waste oils are manifolded into ballast tanks.
Due to severe weather conditions, we were picked up at the rig by a Cessna
180 which landed and took off from an improvised beach landing strip.

Enclosed is a location plat which indicates the point near
Kalgin Island where we plan to drill a test well for the pur-
pose of evaluating our oil and gas leases in that area.
This operation is scheduled to commence about August 1, 1966,
and should have a duration, of approximately sixty (60) days.
For drilling this well,'we will use a submersible type drilling
barge which is currently drilling a test well for us at Kalgin
Island.
If your"office has no objection' to the proposed operation would
you please signify by letter to the undersigned.

Gentlemen:
Hunt Oil Company, as Operator, will soon make a request to your
Committee for permission to drill a well for oil and gas on the
North one-half of Section 2, Township 3 North, Range 16 West, SM.
We are acquiring the drill site by assignment from Bristol Bay
0il Company.
The drilling rig which we will use for this well will not operate
in deep water, and we plan to beach the rig in very shallow water
near the East boundary line of Lease No. ADL18719. Therefore, in
order that we may proceed with our drilling program, weare
respectfully requesting that you grant a de¥iation to us from
your regular spacing rules in order to allow us to drill from a
rig located in shallow water·near the East boundary line of Lease
No. ADL18719.

Re: ADL 18719 (O&G)
Gentlemen:
One of our subsidiaries, Bristol Bay Oil Company, contem-
plates farming out the above lease.
To assist us in preparing the agreements, we would much
appreciate your advice.as to the following matters:
1.) Has there been an actual survey of the
lands covered by the lease? If so, we would like
to have a copy of the plat.
2.) Th'e'farmee would earn an undivided 50%
interest in the entire lease. However, the Joint
Operating Agreement would contain a provision that
it would own 100% interest in the test well and
the production therefrom un~il it had recouped its
costs.
Since this provision would not affect
record title, we assume it would not result in
segregation of the lease into.two leases. However,
we would appreciate your confirmation.
In addition, we would iike to receive three copies of the
Operating Regulations to~ether with a supply of forms of Designation
of Operator, drilling bo~d, and appointmen~ of local agent for pur-
poses of the wildlife stipulatiOn.

Gentlemen:
This company is making plans to drill a' test well for oil and gas
on a State of Alaska lease at a water location. The record ownership
of~ the lease on which .the well will be drilled is held. by another company.
We will be operating the lease under a farmout agreement whereby we will
earn ownership of the lease through the drilling of the well.
We do not plan to operate under a state-wide bond. We need information
concerning the type of bond or bonds which we must make in connection with
the operation described above and the amount of the bond or bonds. We will
need the bond forms if they are available or a sample by which we can prepare
the bond forms (if this is permitted).
Since we hope to commence our drilling operation in the very near future~
your prompt assistance in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Kindly
direct your response to the writer.
Very truly yours~
