BE PREPARED TO SHUT WELL IN AND RAISE WEIGHT TO 98 PCF. DISCUSSION PROPOSED REDRILL OF SCU 43-5 PROPOSAL: Abandon the present Hemlock 1-5 sand completion at~SCU 43-5, mill a window in the 7', casing and redrill to a total depth of ±10,650'. Recomplete well as SCU 43A-5 in the same Hemlock 1-5 sands as were previously perforated. New bottom hole location will be less than 40' frompresent location (see Figure #1)~ ~ ~ JUSTIFICATION: Well SCU 43-5 was completed during 1961 in the Hemlock 1-5 sands. Initial production was 453/5/118 B/D, M/D of O/W/G. Well SCU 43-5 was produced trouble free between the period 1961 and 1970. Prior to mechanical problems in 1970, representative production was 1100/38/1300, B/D, M/D of O/W/G. In June of 1970, the well sanded up and it was necessary to pull the-tubing. During these operations, bad casing was encountered from 10,534~-10,558' (across the Hemlock #4 sand). Two days after the well was returned to production, it resanded. In the s~ummer of 1971 the well was pulled again in an effort to restore its productivity. During this job it was noted that the 7" casing was probably parted at the top of the Hemlock #4 sand. (Refer to Figure #2). After the well was returned to production representative production was 300/8/350, B/D, M/D of O/W/G. During a depth pressure survey, approximately 100 days after being returned to production, sand heaved into the well bore and forced the pressure bombs up the hole. Well SCU 43-5 is presently sanded and continued efforts to recover the fish and bail sand from the tubing have been unsuccessful. In addition to the pressure bomb fish in the hole, there is an unknown amount of piano wire along with a wireline impression block jars. All fish are at an unknown depth and covered by sand. Well SCU 43-5 is currently unproducible and continued efforts to restore the well to production have been unsuccessful. A Hemlock sand 1-5 withdrawal point is required near the 43-5 location in order to fully process the 1-5 reservoir with gas. At the present time there is no well on the west flank between faults C and D producing from a full column of sands 1-5. Gas ,, Gas can be encountered after packers are released, while cleaning out 7" casing prior to abandonment and while redrilling. Gas entries into the mud column can cause serious problems. Care must be exercised at all times not to swab the well during trips or pulling production equipment. PRO 316-1 SERIES - SCU 43-5 January 15, 1973 Page two 1. B. Water Entries: Extreme caution must be exercised while redrilling this well for possible high pressure water entries. The first 200' of interval to be drilled is normally drilled with ±98 pcf mud; however, no major sand bodies will be penetrated. The entire redrill is programmed to be done with 76-78 pcf mud to minimize formation damage and lost circulation in the Hemlock. C. Lost Circulation: While drilling the Hemlock Sand 8 interval in Well 42-5 directly to the North, lost circulation occured with 98 pcf mud. A portion of this interval will be penetrated in the redrill of this well. D. Well killing Procedures: Since the.tubing is plugged with sand, it will be necessary t~ have sufficient mud weight at 9700' to control the Hemlock pressure from below. E. Precautions: Any kicks should be handled by our normal procedures. Drilling crews should be made aware of these methods and care should be exercised at all times by every member of the crew.. The hole must be kept full at all times. 2. Maximum Anticipated Formation Pressure: 4600 psig. 3. Maximum Possible Surface Pressure: 3000 psig. 4. Blowout Prevention Equipment: A. Prior to moving in rig, run feeler in tubing to determine effective depth. (11-7-72 depth 9739'). 2. Cut 3%" tubing ±15' above effective depth, using wireline equipment. 3. Move in drilling rig. 4. Kill well by displacing 76-78 pcf mud down ~e tubing around the cut and up the annulus· (76 pcf mud provides 5100 psi pressure at 9700', and Hemlock ..... pressure is estimated at 4600 psig.) 5. Install 10" - 5000 psig BOPE, including 5000# blow and kill lines (Refer 'to Figure #5). Pressure test according to Operating Instructions, D-17. 6. ~Pull and lay down 3%" tubing and mandrels. 7. Run overshot with circulating sub and engage 3%" tubing fish. At'tempt to release packer (s) . A. If packer(s) release, downsqueeze with sufficient volume of mud to displace to the Baker Model "F" packer at 10,538'. Continue operations until all jewelry is out of the hole. B. Have packer mill and wash pipe on loCation in case it is necessary to wash over tubing or mill packers (Brown HS-16-1). 8. Mill and recover Baker Model "F" packer at 10,538' E-log depth. Make note of drill pipe - E-log depth correction. 9. Clean out 7" casing to 10,583'+ or as deep as possible. Run 4-3/4" or smaller bit (Last bit run was 4-3/4" that was worked to 10,582'. Bruce State of Alaska Division of Mines & Minerals 329 Second Avenue Anchorage~ Alaska Dear Sir: In accordance with the telephone conversation~ Messrs. Bruce - Wyman on ~ay 25, 1961~ we plan to omit the water shut-off tests on well SCU 43-5 provi~ng the Cement Bond log in~[cates a satisfactoi~f cement bond over the critical intervals. As indicated during the subject telephone conversation, the omission of the water shut-off test immediately above the Hemlock Zone pro- ductive inte~¢al appears justified on three bases. 1. ~l~ne 100% success ratio that has been e~erienced in obtaining satisfactory upper water shut-offs in the Soldotna Creek Unit. The fact that the Operator is successfully relying upon Cement Bond log information to defer water shut-off tests below the Hemlock Z~one productive interval~ it has never been necessary to re-enter a well to repair a faulty lower shut-off resulting from use of this procedure in the Swanson Pdver Field. The upper water shut-off may be confirmed on the basis of early well production iz~ormation. If unusually highwater cuts should develop on completion of the well~ well remedial work may be necessazty to establish satisfactory water shut-offs. We will advise you of the results obtained by use of this procedure in well SCU 43-5. Very truly yours~ STA2~DARD 0IL C~PAI~Y OF CALIFORt~E~A ~lestern Operations, Inc.
