I agree with your diagnostic plan and the intent to place the cement as you indicate. In our discussion, it was my assessment that cement should be brought above the DV tool since the present pressure information indicates either a casing leak or the DV is leaking. Your plan should accomplish that. Good luck with the operations. Please call with any questions. Tom Maunder, PE AOGCC "Brandenburg, Tim C -Contract" wrote: Tom, Per our conversation today regarding the Abandonment of SRU 12-27, the original plan had been to abandon the Hemlock via bull heading cement down the 2-3/8" tubing and into the Hemlock Bench 3 through a sliding sleeve located at 10,749'. However, most recent attempts have been unable to establish injection into the Hemlock. Subsequent slickline indicates fill in the production tubing at 10,710' above the Hemlock Bench 3. Additionally, after bleeding gas lift pressure off the well it was discovered that the production casing and tubing both have 600 psi with water to surface in each string. It is believed that the source of this pressure is likely from a lower Tyonek water sand located between the TOC behind the 5-1/2" Casing (estimated to be around 8,800') and the stage tool located at 8178' in the 5-1/2". As a result of these developments, the plan forward is to verify tubing integrity from surface to the sliding sleeve located at 10,616' MD via slickline diagnostics. If tubing integrity is proven then our intent is to pump the abandonment slurry down the production tubing and out the sliding sleeve at 10,616'. The TOC will be balanced at 7,678'MD (500' above the DV tool 8178'). If the tubing does not have integrity then slickline will be used to diagnose the location of the leak to allow for additional planning. If you have any questions, please call Tim Billingsley as he will be the on call for this weekend. He can be reached 346-3092 (HM) or 227-7633 (Cell). This confirms that you and I did discuss the proposed changes to the 12-27 abandonment procedure. As noted in your attachment, after getting the rig on the well you plan to cut the tubing and (providing the tubing condition is acceptable) use the lower 4000' or so of the tubing to spot 2 balanced cement plugs. The deepest will be immediately above the cut point and the 2nd will be above and below the DV tool which is suspected ofleaking. Spotting the plugs as you plan should isolate the "debris plugged" production interval and cover the suspected leak. By copy of this email, you have approval to proceed as proposed in your revised procedure. When it comes time to pressure test the remaining wellbore, please contact the Inspector at (659-3607) so that test can be witnessed. Good luck with the operations. Tom Maunder, PE AOGCC "Bowen, Jerry -Alaska" wrote: Gentlemen; Unocal respectfully requests permission to revise the abandonment procedure in order to safely and efficiently plug and abandon the existing Hemlock completion in the subject well. I believe that you were informed late last week that we were unable to pump into the H3 perforations in the subject well perforations. We have also attempted to bail out sand and paraffin fill to expose the SSD at 10,751' in an attempt to be able to pump into the perforations. After bailing through a sand bridge at 10,635', the bailer became stuck for several hours at 10,702'. Essentially, we were unable to clean out the remaining fill and re-establish communication with the H3 perforations through the SSD at 10,751'. Additionally, we have determined that the well has a steady 600 psi SITP and SICP, with a full column of fresh load water. Since bleeding off the gas lift gas, the well has shown no significant sign of gas. There is no evidence of pressure building in the 13 3/8" surface casing, and the 5 1/2" casing is fully cemented up into the 9 5/8" drilling liner. Based on the limited evidence, it is considered likely that the 600 psi SITP and SICP is due to a leak somewhere in the bottom hole completion (possibly from the H2 perforations) or in the 5 1/2" casing below the multi-stage tool at 8178' (from a charged up Tyonek water sand). 5/5/2004 . . , . ~ ~ Page 2 of 2 Attached for your review, please find a revised summarized abandonment procedure and a revised abandonment schematic diagram. On 6/24/02, immediately after un-landing the completion, the 30-year-old 2 3/8" tubing parted at approximately 3305'. We had not yet picked up the full buoyant weight of the string, we had pulled approximately 28k lbs of the expected 41k lbs total weight when the failure occurred. It was later determined that a pup joint pin had torn and pulled out of the top of the second side pocket mandrel (SPM). Since we did not have sufficient reom to work a short catch overshot over the neck of the SPM, we were faced with running a spear inside the SPM to recover additional tubing from the well. Prior to running the spear we successfully ran a 1 13/16" jet cutter into the fish and made a cut at 7028'. We debated this cut depth for some time, then decided that we preferred to avoid firing a jet cutter above the eventual sidetrack point if possible (to eliminate the risk of casing damage), plus we felt that we had a reasonable chance to recover an additional 3700' of 2 3/8" tubing in one run with the fishing FW: FW: Proposed Revision of SRU 12-27 ...edure (AOG CC Sundry Approval #302-174) BHA. The first attempt to engage the fish with a spear was unsuccessful due to human error (Baker ran the wrong sized grapple), and we have since engaged the fish with a second spear/grapple and are POH with some amount of 2 3/8" tubing. We assume that we have recovered the tbg between 3305' and 7028', although this is not yet confirmed. Considering the fact that we do not need to recover tbg from below 7028' in order to carry out our original plan to sidetrack at -6000', Unocal respectfully requests permission to amend the abandonment program as shown on the attached schematic diagram. Please note that this plan is somewhat similar to the original approved abandonment plan. If necessary, Unocal could spend additional money in an effort to recover additional 2 3/8" tubing. However, it is our position that the proposed revised program will provide the necessary protection against any future leakage, without unnecessary capital expenditures. Thank you. As such, we will not pursue the pre-rig abandonment. I will be sending you the revised plan soon. Thanks for the help. Tim ----Original Message- .... Tom Maunder, PE AOGCC "Brandenburg, Tim C -Contract" wrote: Tom, Per our conversation today regarding the Abandonment of SRU 12-27, the odginal plan had been to abandon the Hemlock via bull heading cement down the 2-3/8" tubing and into the Hemlock Bench 3 through a sliding sleeve located at 10,749'. However, most recent attempts have been unable to establish injection into the Hemlock. Subsequent slickline indicates fill in the production tubing at 10,710' above the Hemlock Bench 3. Additionally, after bleeding gas lift pressure off the well it was discovered that the production casing and tubing both have 600 psi with water to surface in each stdng. It is believed that the source of this pressure is likely from a lower Tyonek water sand located between the TOC behind the 5-112" Casing (estimated to be around 8,800') and the stage tool located at 8178' in the 5-112". As a result of these developments, the plan forward is to vedfy tubing integrity from surface to the sliding sleeve located at 10,616' MD via slickline diagnostics.
