Mr. Ringstad;
I am responding to your April 21, 2003 letter to the Department of
Natural Resources, Division of Oil and Gas, .inquiring about the Nulato
Unit #1, operated by Paul G. Benedum. This well's permit number is
159-009; please use this number in future correspondence with us about
this well.
We have a suite of wireline log data (resistivity and sonic tools), a well
history including core descriptions and a petrographic report (rock
descriptions), and an American Stratigraphic Company graphic log from
the well. We do not have a Stratigraphic Column from the well and are
not aware of a published one for the Koyukuk Basin in general.
Please contact me if you are interested in any of the information I have
mentioned here. We look forward to assisting you.

I~TRODUCTION
The Benedum et al, ~.,~o. I Nulato Unit test represents the first
major attempt to evaluate the commercial oil and/or gas potential of
the Koyukuk Cretaceous Pasin of west-central Alaska.
This previously undrilled sedimentary and structural basin
occupies nearly 10,000 square miles. Tne [~ulato Unit is super-
imposed on a portion of one of the larger eiongated asymetrical
anticlines whose structural alignment conforms to the northeast-
southwest orientation pattern, characteristic of the southeastern
portion of the Koyukuk Basin.
Geographically the well is located near the west bank of the
Yukon River, about 200 miles east from Nome and nearly 350 air
miles west from Fairbanks. The nearest commercial production lies
350 miles to the northeast, in the Umiat Field of the Naval Petroleum
Reserve No. 4, and about the same distance to the southeast are the
newly established fields on the Kenai Peninsula. These are also the
ciosest wells to the area so that there are no wells with which to
establish correlation.
The South Fork anticline was seiected for driIling for several
reasons:
-16-
1. Logistic advantages, accessibility and proximity to
the supply point on the Yukon River.
2. Good definition of structural closure.
3. Proximity to an active oil seep.
4. This structure is .partially confirmed by seismic
information.
Other structures in the area may have had some, but not all, of the
advantages listed above.
The South Fork anticiine is underlain along the west flank by a
thrust fault which has only a few hundred feet of observed surface dis-
placement along its trace about two miles away. It was thought that
this fault would have little or no effect on the well site.
WELL SITE GEOLOGY
The well penetrated only rocks of Cretaceous age, probably all
lower Cretaceous. It was anticipated t~at older rocks would be en-
countered at the depth which was drilled. The first core, taken at
6858 yielded unmistakable evidence of faulting, as did several of the
succeeding cores. Above the first core much of the hole presented
· difficulty due 'to the fact that it tended to become crooked if any
appreciable weight were applied to the bit. This may have been a
function of steep dip or faulting. Examination of the sample log
suggests several zones of pOssible duplication, which to a lesser
extent are also suggested by the electric log. It is now considered
likely that the minor-thrust fault exposed west of the well is part of
a system of thrust faults which affected the well, and which dupli-
cated a great deal of section.
It is also very possible that the steep west side of the structure
was drilled, rather than the top, even though the surface location was
on or near the axial trace. Two cores indicated dips of 600 or more.
Even if faulting did not duplicate many of the rocks, steep dip cer-
tainly contributed to a decrease in the stratigraphic succession
penetrated. The major changes expected around 4500 to 6000 feet
Were not encountered, undoubtedly because of the structural condi-
tions that were present. These unknown conditions prevented the
penetration of older rocks, including the Paleozoic se~ction, which was
the primary objective.
~ost of the monotonous section was fractured and exhibited
evidence of brecciation. The fractures were filled with calcite or
silica and suggest two major stages of diagenesis. ~uch of the brec-
clarion shown in the cores is probably structural, although submarine
landsIide material is also probable.
It appears that the entire section penetrated represents primarily
a deltaic deposit formed in a rapidly subsiding environment. Shallow
-18-
marine sediments above 6000' contained cannel coals, whereas the
lower deltaic part contained carbonized plant remains as deep as
10,500 feet. No metamorphic rocks were observed in the section.
To be sure about these and other conditions four thin sections were
prepared from the cores, by Cal-Brea, P. O. Box 254, Brea, Calif-
ornia, where specialized equipment was available to impregnate the
specimens in plastic. The microscopic anlysis was made by a
specialist on the Amstrat staff. Results of these analyses follow:
Thin Section Analyses
Dep th: 6861
Petrographic Desription:
Texture: Angular, unsorted, clastic debris with average grain
size of sand fraction about 0.13 mm. Maximum grain size of sand
fraction 0.60 mm.; minimum size 0.063 mm. About 40% silt, clay,
chlorite and sericite matrix. ~irocrystalline to fine crystalline
mosaic quartz healing fractures.
Structure: Abundant healed and open fractures at miscellan-
eous orientations.
Porosity: About 7% porosity as open fractures. About 20% of
the entire rock is composed of secondary quartz that has healed
fractures.
Mineralogy: Angular, unsorted, clastic quartz sand, 18%;
angular, unsorted, rock grains, 14%; mica, 8%; feldspar (all types),
2%; fine material, such as clay, sericite, chlorite and quartz silt,
37%; secondary mosaic quartz cement in fractures, 21% .Organisms: ~one.
Diagenesis: Many stages of fracturing and healing with
secondary mosaic quartz are apparent. Post-healing strain is ap-
parent in some of the quartz.
Environment: Transitional, quiet. This rock would be classed
~as a subgraywacke and represents deposition by dumping of material
into rapidly subsiding basin. The source material was apparently
derived from a terrane of predominantly igneous and metamorphic rocks,
and transport was apparently not great. The paucity of feldspar suggests
much weathering in situ or a low feldspar source. Some argillite, shale,
quartzite and chert grains are present.
-19-
..Dep tn: 68 73
Petrographic Description:
Texture: Fine textured, dark clay with about 17% rock fragments
from silt size to coarse sand size scattered throughout. A fine network
of clay-lined fractures, dividing the thin section into an almost infinite
number of fragments is present. These probably represent the slicken-
sides seen in the core specimen.
Structure: The sliekensides represented by the clay films are the
only structure observable. ~o displacement can be found along any of
the slickensides.
Porosity: Nil.
Mineralogy: Dark colored clay, 83%; quartz silt, 6%; rock
grains, mostly argillite and quartzite, 11%.
.Organisms: None.
Diagenesis: Nil.
Environment of Deposition: Transitional, quiet. Deposition
probably occurred in a somewhat restricted portion of the delta area.
The shearing that caused the slickensiding is post-lithification in age
and probably of orogenic significance. No faulting or displacement can
be found, however.
Depth: 6874
Petrographic Description:
Texture: Angular, unsorted clastic debris with a mean grain size
of 0.325 mm. and coarse, crystalline calcite cement along healed frac-
tures. Some fractures are healed with microcrystalline mosaic quartz
(chert?).
Structure: Abundant fractures oriented at about 70° to each other.
Crude bedding may be indicated by slight lithologic changes across
bands of about 4 mm. thick. Subtle changes in the ratio of quartz
grains to rock grains are observable.
Porosity: None, although fracture porosity did exist before cemen-
tation of the fractures with quartz (chert?) and calcite.
~.ineralogy: Angular rock grains of argillite, chert, quartzite,
shale, limestone and fine textured igneous material, 24%; angular quartz
sand, 10%; angular feldspars, 8%; mica, 5%; carbonate, as secondary
cement, 13%; carbonate, as clastic grains, 2%; matrix material silt,
clay, sericite and chlorite, 38%. Many minor accessories such as
epidote, serpentine, garnet and pyrite were noted but constitute less
than 1% of the total rock. Organisms: None
Diagenesis: Silicification by quartz (chert?) cement along frac-
tures and within the main body of the rock, 2%; cementation by second-
ary calcite along healed fractures, 13%; fracturing as total, 16'%.
-20-
Depth 6874 (continued)
Environment of Deposition: The environment of deposition would
be transitional--quiet. The complex mineralogy of this rock is indica-
tive of a source terrane of shale~, argillite, chert and carbonate
(Triassic or Jurassic) and some crystalline rocks (quartz, feldspar and
mica). Transport was probably not great, because the sediment is im-
mature. Deposition was rapid and probably very nearly stayed in
equilibrium with subsidence.
Dep th: 78 73
Binocular Description:
Sandstone, dark gray, fine grained, angular, very poorly sorted
(5-5), micaceous, clayey. Calcite and quartz cement along healed
fractures. ~edding appears to dip at about 600 to the axis of t~e core,
as defined by fabric of the mica flakes and elongate grains.
Petrographic Description:
Texture: Fine grained, anguiar, poorly sorted quartz sand with
some rock grains and much fine grained muscovite. Elongated grains
show a definite fabric, probably parallel to the bedding. Fine material
composed of clay, silt a. nd mica.
Structure: ~edding is probably expressed by the fabric of the
mica grains.
Porosity: Nil.
Mineralogy: Quartz sand, 27%; silt, 9%; clay, 28%; rock frag-
ments, 7%; mica, 19%; carbonate, 9%; opaque minerals, 1%. Some
penninite, as a detrital mineral is disseminated throughout. This is
rather unusual.
Organisms: None.
Diagenesis: Fracturing and recementation by calcite and quartz
(alpha quartz)'.
Origin and Environment: This sediment was deposited in a quiet,
rapidly subsiding locale. The predominant source rock was probably
granitic or gneissic. Metamorphics and sediments were also available
and is indicated by the grains of shale, argillite, quartzite and chert.
-21-
CONCLUSIONS
Although no good reservoir beds were noted, several~ were potential.
Secondary materials such as silt, silica or carbonaceous rocks had in-
filled the void spaces. A shoreline facies, deposited in an agitated
environment probably exists in this stratigraphic succession. Beach
deposits suitable for reservoir beds will probably be found if additional
expIoration is conducted. However, the major possibilities still appear
to be concealed beneath the Cretaceous rocks.

Mr. Richard V. Murphy
Division of Mines and Minerals
529 Second Avenue
Ancao~age, Alaska
Dear t~r. Murphy:
On May 19, 1960 I received a print of the official protraction of the rec-
tangular· system of surveys published by the Bureau of Land w~ana~emento· February
1% 1060.~ The location of the ~ulato Unit No. 1 well is the center of the oE~ ~ ~
of Sec. 12,'~. l0 S., R. i E., Xateel River Meridian according to this protrac-
tion which is official as I understand it.
Accordingly, I~want to advise you of the correction in the location des-
ignation. I wo~ld appreciate it if you would tell me the proper method and forms
to use for this. I checked the Regulations and found a section covering change
in location which referred to changing the location prior to drilling. Our prob-
lem is one of keeping the location in one place and moving the land net about.
Rather than guessing at the right method I thought I would write you and find
out the proper procedure.
Tours truly,
William C. Fackler
Project Manager
