VonderAhe Petroleum Engineer THRU' FROM: State Alaska DATE: July 19, 1974 FILE NO: TELEPHONE NO: SUBJECT: SOCAL's Falls Creek #43-6, Nin~]chik-Riyer ,No. _,l,, Cohoe Unit #1 I left home at 6:15 a.m. July 17th and flew to Kenai via A.A.I. Our departure was 20 minutes late so I had barely enough time to rendezvous with Wayne Wilson of SOCAL after picking up a Hertz rental car and driving to Sol dotna. We ~rove to the location of ~SOCAL'sFalls Creek ¢f43.-6_which is 1.8 miles past ~iam Shell Lodge and about 1/4 mile to the east of the Sterling Highway. The location had been smoothly graded and seeded but the results were inef- fectual, with grass growing in only a few areas. Wayne said they planned to fertilize and re-seed the whole area. In fact he paced the sides to get an approximate size in acres to figure the amount of fertilizer and seed to use. The marker was standard 4" pipe with a bull plug welded on top and the re- quired information was bead-welded on the pipe and painted black so it was very legible against the orange background of the pipe. The caption bead- welded in the pipe was: "SOCAL 1973-FALLS CREEK #43-6 - SE 1/4 SEC. 6 T1N R12W, S.M." The water well was left in useable condition with a 1/4" plate welded on top. The whole area was quite level except for the area of the sump which had settled 1 1/2 to 2 feet but the sides of the depression are rounded smoothly and sloping. Not vertical. Altogether the condition of location is very satisfactory. Verbal approval of final abandonment given Wayne Wilson. (3 photographs attached) I thendrove to Ninilchik and out to Brinkerhoff, Ninilchik #1 which is '4 '1/2 miles northerly from'the Ninilchik airport entrance road which in turn is about 3 miles to the east of the Sterling Highway, arriving at the site at 10'15 a.m. The location is in ver~ poor condition including the well itself. The 13 3/8" surface casing is protruding about 20" above ground with the 4" pipe marker cemented into the top of it and extending more than 5 feet above it. (see photos 4,7 & 10) The 13 3/8" rat hole casing was not cut off or removed and pro- trudes more than 3 feet above ground. (same photos) The marker has infor- mation bead-welded on the side reading downward as follows- "BRINKERHOFF CO - OP. NINILCHIK RIVER NO. 1 Sec. 21 - 1S - 13W SN. EL 275 LEASE NO ADL 41217, PERMIT NO. 73-39, SPUDED 12-31-73, P&A 2/25-74" (~)R63072 Homer L. Burrell -2- July 19, 1974 The water well 6 5/8" casing (see photo #5) protrudes about 5 feet above ground with a 1/8 inch plate incompletely welded on top with a 2 foot piece of 2 inch pipe, open at top, welded to the plate. On the 2 inch pipe is bead-welded: "WATER WELL 140 FEET". The location is fairly clean as only a couple pieces of planking were exposed near the well and a grease bucket (to the right edge of photo #10).. The surface was apparently bladed when the ground was very wet as it is exceed- ingly rough. If any .attempt was made at smoothing the surface by backblading it was ineffective; probably because of surface being too wet. In left center of photo #9 which shows area to left of the location of the car in photo #8, a vertical bank about 8 feet high shows where material has been bladed out to heap up the area in the foreground of both these pictures. Recommendation: (1) That the rat hole casing be either pulled out or cut off below ground level and filled with earth, sand or gravel. (2) That the sur- face of the area be bladed and "back bladed" while dry and smoothed out. (3) I believe enough material should be bladed from an area large enough to not noticeably change the general surface elevation, and build up the area around the marker high enough to bring the surface up to cover the surface casing by a few inches, this surface could taper outward from about ten feet from the well without it being too noticeable. (4) A thicker plate or bull plug should be welded on top at the 6 5/8" casing to seal it completely. After leaving the Brinkerhoff location at 11:40 a.m. and stopping at Ninil- chik for lunch I arrived at Union Oil Company's Cohoe Unit #1 at 1:20 p.m. The location is in excellent condition, well smoothed and cl_ean with no indication'of where the sump was located which was along right side of photo #14. The marker is rather high, estimated 9 feet, so that it is a little difficult to read the information bead-welded on' it near the top. The captions reads- UNION-NEWMONT CLARK 819 N & 1302 WEST OF STH EST CORNER SEC. 8 T3N RllW S.M. PERMIT # 73-25". Spruce trees 'removed from the location were limbed and stacked beside the access road. (photo #12) I walked around the perimeter of the location area and the only debris exposed was along the south slope where the rains had caused some slumping and gullying and exposed a few short pieces of 4" plastic pipe, a piece of 2" metal pipe and a few feet of wire rope. Also a rather large bundle of sheet plastic (Visqueen) was washed down one gully and into the edge of the woods. (Photo #13) This was called to their attention this morning and they promised to remove it. Final abandonment approval given by phone. I left the location at 2:20 p.m., turned the car in and caught the 4:00 p.m. A.A.I. flight arriving at home at 5:15 p.m. Attachments TO Hoyle H. Hamiltonff~ t / Phoned ~, ~nb~r of Br~erhoff regarding requ~re~ne~ on abandoment of their (1). Pull or cut off rat hole pipe at or below ground level and fill pipe with earth, sand or gravel. (2). Blade earth from large enough area so re~val will not be too obvious and fill area around well mar~r high enough to cover 13 3/8" casing a few inches. Taper outward gradually from about 10 feet from marker. (3).Weld plate solidly around top of water well or weld bull plug on top of 6 5/8" casing. 2" pipe there is not necessary if re~ved. (4). Backblade area to s~oth .out surface while it is fairly dry. '~ch of it appears as if no backblading had been done. He promised to get the contractor on the job t~ediately and correct these items. They informed me that their plane would arrive shortly and they would be taking off in a few minutes for West Foreland. I departed Anchorage by charter aircraft from Wilbur's Flight Operations at 7:05 a.m. arriving at Marathon's Trading Bay airstrip on West Foreland at 7'50 a.m. On arrival we found that the pipeline plane had already arrived and the two CIPL pipeline nun, Mr. Dick Lewis and Harry Ramsey had already commenced warming up the meter prover for proving the meters and were circulating the samplers but were awaiting my arrival to pul 1 the sampl es. Oil samples were then caught and .tested for gravity and BS&W. The Trading Bay Unit was read at 35.9u API at 70u F which adjusted to 35.2o API at 60o F. This sample had a 3/10 of a 1% BS&W content. The Trading sample was read at 30.1°API at 77o F which equates to a 29.0°API at ~ F. This sample also had a 3/10 of a 1% BS&W content. The Marathon production operator, Mr. Bob Roper and myself both checked these readings and accepted them as correct. We both signed the two Trading Bay run tickets and the four Trading Bay Unit run tickets. The following data was taken from these six run tickets: .Fie)d/Unit Ticket No. Meter No. Fa.c~t. or~ Gross Barrels Net Barrels TB 1064 1 .9971 62,975 62,604 TB 1065 2 1.00lO 66,325 66,604 TBU 1891 3 .9989 214,724 213,844 TBU 1892 4 .9992 228,465 227,597 TBU 1893 5 .9973 227,896 226,599 TBU 1894 6 1.005 230,208 229,632 1,03U'b93 1,026,880 I next went with Marathon's relief production o.pe.rator Mr. Swede Foss to review the installation of the LEX meter facilities. He drove me to the production operations building where the LEX meter counter is located. This counter (meter) is read each night at midnight by the production operator who telephones the LEX plant operator at the LEX plant, who records the Homer L. Burrell -2- January 22, 1974 the reading on the appropriate LEX Form (copy attached}. This has been the procedure since the LEX plant commenced operations and the original records are on file at the. LEX plant office. We next visited the production equipment building where the LEX meter is located so I could review the piping hook-up on the LEX meter and the operating procedures. The incoming LEX liquids enter a gas scrubber which prevents any gas from going thru the meter. From the scrubber the liquids go through the meter and then a choke which maintains a back pressure on the meter to prevent the vapor pressure from getting too low, on through an automatic shut-in valve and then into the crude oil line of the Trading I)ay Unit. Swede then took me to the Marathon operation office and turned me over to the temporary production supervisor and LEX plant operator, Mr. Lyle Anthony. Mr. Anthony drove us to the LEX plant where I reviewed the liquids system and reviewed his records.. The.liquids come out of the plant and go through an automatic diverting valve which normally sends the fluid to the LEX meter. Should the meter or crude oil line shut off for some reason, the liquids are automatically diverted into one of two 30,000 gallon holding tanks. These two tanks are located near the LEX plant building and are also used to prove the LEX meter. The meter proving procedure is as follows: An adequate stock is built up in one of the tanks by manually shuting off the LEX meter and diverting the LEX liquids into one of the tanks. The liquid level in either tank can be read to the nearest 1/4 inch {4 1/2 gallons) from a fixed tank gage on the sight glass of the tank. There are appropriate tank strapings for each of these tanks located in the LEX operators office. The input from the LEX plant ts then switched into a second tank, the level in the first tank is carefully read and recorded as is the meter reading. The liquids then are pumped out from the tank through the meter and crude line. The difference in the beginning and the ending tank readings vs. the beginning and ending meter readings, constitutes the variation in the meter reading from the tank reading. This data was originally entered into a log book carried at the LEX plant operations office and the data was sent in to the accounting office in Anchorage. Now there is a regular LEX Sales Meter Test meter proving form for this data {See Attachment). This form is sent in to the main office where I presume that the meter factors are calculated. I recorded two of the previous meter proving data sets from the operations log, and obtained copies of two of the most recent meter proving data sheets {attached). One was recorded on October 28, 1973 and one on December 2, lg73. Factors are not run every month, just when personnel think it is desireable, Iluedue to a variation in the meter pressure or some problem associated with the meter. From the two attached copies of meter tests that I have obtained, I calculate that the November meter factor should have been .98999 and the December meter factor 1.0072. Homer L. Butte11 '-3- January 22, 1974 Following my review of the LEX metering system I returned to the Cook Inlet Pipeline meter building where meter proving was nearing completion and checked over the meter proving reports and metering procedures.. I recorded the following list of data from the meter proving reports after they were all completed. The Cook Inlet Pipeline crew then took the proving data back to their office at Drift River to calculate the factors and they will send me a copy of these meter proving reports when completed (final factors from reports listed above). I returned to Marathon's production office to pick up the charter pilot and found I had a phone call from Anchorage informing me to procede to the Brinkerhoff Drilling Company rig, #59 on the Ninilchik River No. 1 well near the town of Ninilchik, to witness BOP test. We took off from West Foreland at 10:50 a.m. and arrived at the designated Ninilchik airstrip at 11:25 a.m. The Brinkerhoff Drilling Company tool pus her , Mr. Jerome Dodge, picked us up at the airstrip at 12:15 p.m. and carried us to the rig. They were still in the process of nippling up the BOP equipment on the 9 5/8" casing that had been run and cemented at 2996' I made a general inspection of tile drillsite pad and rig finding everything to my satisfaction with the exception that there was no well sign posted. I discussed this with Jerome Dodge and he assured me that they would prepare a we'll sign and post it. By approximately 3:30 the BOP nippling- up was completed and a test plug was run into the bottom of the BOP stack. The pipe rams were closed and a pressure of 2500 psi was put on the system with the rig pump. Everything seemed to be holding so I requested that the hydrill be actuated, the switch was thrown and it worked immediately. I also required that the kellycock valve be actuated. The floor valve was being used on the bottom of the test plug to prevent the pressure from entering the casing so it was also being tested at this pressure. I then went down to the manifold house to observe the further pressure increase from that point. Pressure on the BOP and manifold system was increased to 3900 psi where a leak developed and it was necessary to bleed the pressure and tighten a couple of flanges. Following the tightening of these flanges the pressure was again put on the system and increased tO 5000ppsi where it Honmr L, Burrell -4- January 22, 1974 bled off slowly for awhile and .after checking we could..find no leaks. A valve on the casing, below the test nipple, was opened and it indicated no leak so we kicked the pressure back up to 5000 psi and it became solid and held. Evidently there was an air picket somewhere in the pipe system which went into solution in the test fluid under pressure. I watched the pressure for awhile and it was holding to my satisfaction so I informed Jerome Dodge that he could continue with his pressure test of the blind rams and the kellycock. Due to the approaching darkness it would be necessary for myself and the pilot to leave because the airstrip at Ninilchik has no lights. I informed Mr. Dodge that I did not have any blank Field Inspection Report forms with me, but that I would fill out one after I returned to the office and mail it to his company office in Anchorage. He drove us back to the airstrip while the rig crew continued with the testing and we took off from Ninilchik at approximately 4:40 p.m. with the last light of the evening and returned to Anchorage, arriving at 5:40 p.m. On this field trip I witnessed the run tickets and meter proving for Trading Bay and Trading Bay Unit and reviewed the LEX metering system, meter proving procedures, records and operation procedures at Marathon's West Foreland production facility. I also inspected the rig and wit- nessed the BOP test on Brinkerhoff's Ninilchik River NO. 1. It is recommended that the LEX meter factors used for the November and December LEX net production reports be checked to see if they agree with the two attached random samples of meter proving reports I inspected at the LEX plant office.
