GENERAL DRILLING AND COMPLETION PROCEDURE
KUPARUK RIVER FIELD-Injector
KRU 2L-317A Sidetrack
Current wellbore status: Surface casing was set at 3461' MD and cemented with
full returns to surface. Production hole was drilled to 14,161' MD with the Tarn
(Bermuda) interval top (T3.1) picked at 13,462' MD, but there was not enough
net pay to complete. The rig is in the process of setting a continuous 15.8 ppg
class G cement plug from TD to 13,300' MD to cover the entire Bermuda
interval. Then 300' of 17.0 ppg class G cement will be set from 9650-9350' MD
for a kick-off plug. The plan is to sidetrack to a new bottom hole location target
in the Bermuda interval approximately 1829' north & west of the current BHL as
follows:
1. Sidetrack off cement plug at--MD and drill 6-3/4" hole to TD according to
directional plan. Run LWD logging equipment with gamma ray, resistivity, and
density-neutron tools.
Note: If significant .hydrocarbon zones are present abOve the intermediate
casing point, sufficient cement will be pumped for isolation in accordance with
20 AAC 25.030(d)(3)(C).
2. Run and cement 5-1/2" L-80 BTC Csg X 3-1/2" L-80 8rd EUE-Mod tapered
production casing string with Baker casing seal receptacle at crossover point.
3. Pressure teSt casing to 3,500 psi.
4. Run 3-1/2" L-80 8rd EUE-Mod completion assembly. Sting into polished seal
bore wi[h seal assembly and pressure test tubing and annulus to 3,500 psi.
5. Set TWC, ND BOPE and install production tree.
6, Secure well. Rig down and' move out.
7. Handover well to Operations Personnel. (Cement bond log will be run prior to
perforating well).

Brian,
Thanks for the information. Bummer about the original BHL. What you propose will
meet the regulations and you are correct regarding not having to tag the bottom plug
since it starts at TD. Kicking off on the upper plug will accomplish the weight
test on that one.
I am copying the inspectors with this note. Please have the company man contact
them with regard to witnessing any plug they wish.
I will look forward to seeing the paperwork tomorrow. Have the courier deliver it
to our old address.

As we discussed, we've reached TD on 2L-317 but there is insufficient net pay to
complete the well. Nabors 19E has made.short trip, conditioned hole, and is
ready to trip out and prepare to set cement abandonment and kick-off plugs.
The Tam (Bermuda) interval top (T3.1) was picked at 13, 462' rnd and there are no
hydrocarbon bearing intervals present above this depth. We propose setting a
continuous 15. 8 ppg class G cement plug from TD of 14,193' to 13, 300' rrd to
cover the entire Bermuda interval. Also propose not tagging this bottom plug
since in is being set from TD.
The open hole above 13,300' md will contain 9.6 ppg LSND mud up to the sidetrack
kick-off point (9500' md). We plan to spot 20 bbls of high-vis 9.6 ppg LSND
mud and then 300' of 17.0 ppg dass G cement (9650-9350') for l~ck-off plug.
The new BHL (2L-317A) targeting the Berrruda interval is 1829' north & west of
the abandoned 2L-317.
Please let me know if additional information is needed for you to verbally
approve plan and we'll file the appropriate forms tomorrow.
Thanks- Brian 265-6979

KRU 2L 317
Reason for Sundry: Phillips Alaska, Inc. suspended 2L-317 operations in May
2000 to move Nabors 19E to 2N pad before the roads thawed and to drill
higher rate potential wells. Surface casing was cemented and the plug
bumped with seawater and 1200' tvd diesel cap.
We anticipate moving the rig back to 2L-317 about November 13 to drill
to TD and complete the well as described in the original permit to drill
(permit number 200-060, approved May 1,2000).
1. Move in and rig up Nabors 19E.

Remove tree. Install and test BOPE to 3,500 psi. Pull TWC, tubing hanger
and joint 2-7/8" tubing. Test casing to 2000 psi.
RIH, displace seawater and diesel with 9.1 ppg LSND mud. Drill out cement
and 20' of new hole. Perform formation integrity test not to exceed 16.0 ppg
EMW. This establishes a maximum allowed drilling mud weight below the
casing shoe per 20 AAC 25.030 (0.5 ppg less than the FIT or LOT EMW).
Drill 6-1/2" x 7-1/2" hole to TD according to directional plan. Run LWD logging
equipment with density and porosity tools.
Note: If significant hydrocarbon zones are present above the Tarn, sufficient
cement will be pumped for isolation in accordance with 20 AAC

KRU 2L 317
Revised 5/11/00
REASON for Sundry: Phillips Alaska, Inc requests an "Operations
Shutdown" for 2L 317 after drilling and casing the Surface Hole. The
Tarn Operations group has requested the Drilling Group to proceed to
2N Pad to drill the higher rate wells as quickly as possible. Nabors 19E
required some modifications after finishing the NPRA wells and the 2L
317 surface hole provided an opportunity to complete this work. We
anticipate that Nabors 19E will be ready to move to 2N 347 on
Monday/Tuesday of next week. The intent will be to return to 2L 317
later on this year and drill to TD as indicated in the original permit to drill.
1. Move in and rig up Nabors 19e.
2. Install diverter system.
3. Drill 9.875" hole to 7-5/8" surface casing point according to directional plan.
,
Run and cement 7-5/8" 29.7#, L-80 BTC-Mod casing string to surface. Employ
lightweight permafrost cement lead slurry to assure cement returns to the
surface. Adequate excess cement will be pumped to ensure cement reaches
the surface. If cement does not circulate to surface, a Top Job will only be
performed after consulting with the AOGCC.
,
The plug will be bumped with seawater and a 1200' TVD diesel cap. A tubing
hanger with pup will be set in the casinghead, and a Tree installed/tested. The
casing will be tested to 2000 psi and a BPV installed.

Dear Mr. Alvord:
Enclosed is the approved application for permit to drill the above referenced well.
Please note that any disposal of fluids generated from this driiling operation which are pumped
down the surface/production casing annulus of a well approved for annular disposal on Drill Site
2L must comply with the requirements and limitations of 20 AAC 25.080. Approval of this
permit to drill does not authorize disposal of drilling waste in a volume greater than 35,000
barrels through the annular space of a single well or to use that well for disposal purposes for a
period longer than one year.
The permit to drill does not exempt you from obtaining additional permits required by law from
other governmental agencies, and does not authorize conducting drilling operations until all other
required permitting determinations are made.
Blowout prevention equipment (BOPE) must be tested in accordance with 20 AAC 25 035.
Sufficient notice (approximately 24 hours) must be given to allow a representative of the
Commission to witness a test of BOPE installed prior to drilling new hole. Notice may be given
by contacting the Commission petroleum field inspector on the North Slope pager at 659-3607.

*Spud mud should be adjusted to a FV between 100-120 sec/qt to drill gravel beds ..
Drilling fluid practices will be in accordance with the regulations stated in 20 AAC
25.033.
Maximum Anticipated Surface Pressure:
Maximum anticipated surface pressure (MASP) while drilling the production hole is
calculated using a surface casing leak-off of 13.5 ppg EMW (0.70 psi/fi) and a gas
gradient of 0,11 psi/fi. This shows that formation breakdown would occur at a surface
pressure of 1,357 psi. Therefore ARCO will test the BOP equipment to 3,500 psi after
setting surface casing.
MASP = (2,300 ft)(0.70 - 0.11)
= 1,357 psi
Based on offset well data, reservoir pressures in the Tarn sands in the vicinity of 2L pad
are expected to be --2,300 psi (0.43 psi/fi). Assuming a 150 psi overbalance is required
to safely drill and trip in this formation, then a required mud weight of 8.6 ppg can be
predicted as the maximum mud weight needed to safely drill in this formation, assuming
a TVD of 5,521'. Target (Midpoint T2 T3) (2300+150)/(0.052'5521)=8.6.

Well Proximity Risks:

Alaaka 0il & Gas Cons. C0~mis,~on
The nearest well to 2L-317 is 2L-315. The wells are19.5' from each other at a depth of
600'.
Drillinq Area Risks:
The primary risk in the 2L-317 drilling area is shallow gas below the permafrost. Therefore the
surface hole will need to be drilled with weighted mud (9.5 - 10.2 ppg) to avoid underbalancing
the hole. Another observed problem in the area is possible lost circulation at approximately
3,300' TVD and in the Tarn formation.
Analysis of pressure data from offset wells shows that a mud weight of 9.0-9.,5 ppg will provide
sufficient overpressure to safely drill, trip pipe, and cement the well. The 9-5/8" casing shoe will
be tested to leak-off, or to a maximum equivalent mud weight of 16.0 ppg upon drilling out of
the casing.
Annular Pumpin.~ O~3erations:
Incidental fluids developed from drilling operations will be either injected into an approved
annulus on the same pad or hauled to the nearest permitted Class II disposal well.. (Note that
cement rinseate will not be iniected down the dedicated disposal well but will be recycled or
held for an open annulus.) The open annulus will be left with a non-freezing fluid during any
extended shut down (> 4 hr) in pumping operations. The 2L-317 surface/production casing
annulus will be filled with diesel after setting production casing and prior to the drilling rig
moving off of the well. If isolation is required per regulations over significant hydrocarbons,
then sufficient cement volume will be pumped during the production cement job to cover those
formations.
F_ollowin.q_drilling operations, ARCO Alaska, Inc. will submit application for approval of 2L-317
f-°r ~-hn'ular pumPing of flUidS occurring as a result of drilling operations, per regulation 20 AAC
25.080. Any zones containing significant hydrocarbons will be isolated prior to initiating annular
pumping. There will be no USDW's open below the shoe or potable/industrial water wells within
one mile of the receiving zone. Reference the enclosed directional drilling plan for other
formation markers in this well.
Surface casing will be set in the Cretaceous shales below the base of the West Sak Sands.
These 300-500' thick shales are part of the Colville Group and are known to provide vertical
barriers to fluid flow. The surface casing shoe will be set a minimum of 200' vertically below the
base of the West Sak into the heart of the shales.
The maximum volume of fluids to be pumped down the annulus of this well will not exceed
35,000 bbl without the specific permission of the AOGCC. Fluid densities will range from diesel
to a maximum of 12.0 ppg for drilling fluid wastes. Using 12.0 ppg fluid and the rig's specified
maximum pumping pressure of 1,500 psi for annular injection, the maximum pressure at the
surface casing shoe is estimated by:
Max Shoe Pressure = (12.0 ppg) * (0.052) * (Surf. Shoe TVD) + 1,500 psi
= (12.0 ppg) * (0.052) * (2,300') + 1,500 psi
Max Pressure = 2,935 psi
This pressure is conservative, since frictional losses while pumping have not been taken into
consideration. The surface and production casing strings exposed to the annular pumping

Dear Commissioner Christenson,
ARCO Alaska, Inc. hereby files this Application for Permit to Drill a development weli'in the
Tarn area, KRU 2L-317, located approximately seven miles southwest of the Kuparuk River
Unit's 2M Drillsite.
The well is accessed via a new gravel road originating at 2M Pad. Nabors Rig 19e will drill
the well. If commercial, the well will also completed with Nabors 19e.
Attached is the information required by 20 AA(::; 25.005(c).
There will be no reserve Pit for this well. Waste drilling mud will be disposed of down the
annulus of an existing well on 'Drillsite 2L (subject to AOGCC approval), or hauled to a KRU
Class II disposal well. All cuttings generated will be preferentially ground at the on-site ball
mill and injected down an approved, existing well annulus on 2L pad or stored temporarily
onsite or hauled to the Prudhoe Bay Field for temporary storage and eventual processing for
injection down an approved disposal well.
The TD of this well. will be in the Tarn formation. H2S has not been encountered in this
region in any' stratum shallower than the Lisburne Formation. Therefore, ARCO has not
included an H2S contingency plan with this Application, and requests an exemption from the.
H2S requirements. However, all drilling mud, cores.and produced fluids exiting'the, wellbore.'..
will be monitored for detectable levels of H2S.
The following are ARCO's designated contacts for reporting responsibilities to the
Commission:
1) Completion Report Sharon AIIsup-Drake, Drilling Technologist 263-4612
(20 AAC 25.070)
2) Geologic Data and Logs Doug Hastings, Geologist 265-6967
(20 AAC 25.071)
If you have questions or require additional information, please contact Bill Lloyd at 265-6531
or me at 265-6120 in our Anchorage office.
Sincere!y,
c, RECEIVED
