APPLICATION OF STANDARD OIL COMPANY )

FOR AN ORDER AUTHORIZING APPLICANT TO )
CONDUCT A GAS INJECTION PROJECT IN )
FURTHERANCE OF PRESSURE MAINTENANCE BY )
INJECTING GAS INTO THE HEMLOCK ZONE OF TEE )
SWANSON RIVER FIELD, KENAI PENINSUIA, )
A~S~ )
Comes now Applicant, STANDARD OIL COMPANY OF CALIFORNIA, WESTERN
OPERATIONS, INC., and in support of this application respectfully shows:
(1) Applicant is the Operator for Richfield Oil Corporation, Union
Oil Company of California, The Ohio Oil Company, and itself in the Swanson
River Unit, and the Operator for Richfield Oil Corporation, Texaco, Inc.,
and itself in the Soldotna Creek Unit. All wells presently producing
from th~ Swanson River Field are located upon lands included within these
Units.
(2) Applicant desires to conduct an injection project within a
portion of the lands included in the Swanson River and Soldotna Creek
Units by injecting gas into the producing formation called the Hemlock
Zone of the Swanson River Field. The Hemlock Zone is located at an aPproxi-
mate depth of lO, O00 to 12,000 feet and is composed of conglomerates and
fine to coarse grained sandstones-with interbedded coal and carbonaceous
siltstone.
(3) The purpose of this proposed project is to initiate pressure
maintenance by injecting gas into the Hemlock Zone of the Swanson River
Field.
(4) The group of leases covering lands included within the proposed
project, a portion of the Swanson River and Soldotna Creek Unit boundaries,
and the location and character of all wells within the area encompassed by
the proposed project as well as the formations in which all wells are
currently completed, are shown on the plat attached hereto, marked Exhibit
"A", and by reference made a part hereof.
(5) Applicant intends to inject into the Hemlock Zone of the
Swanson River Field through the proposed injection wells, the location of
which are also shown on Exhibit "A", attached hereto; and/or other wells
.
which may later be designated by the Applicant as information develops.
- 2 -
(6) The proposed injection wells are cased as indicated on the
attachments entitled~ "Description of Injection Wells' Casing", marked
Exhibit "B", (1 through 5)~ and by reference made a part hereof. Said
casing has been set and cemented in such manner that no damage will be
caused to oil~ gas or fresh water resources by the proposed gas injection.
Water shut off tests above the Hemlock Zone have been obtained for each
injection well. Applicant intends, periodically~ to run injectivity profiles
to determine where the injected gas is flowing. Ail injection wells are
to be equipped with a production packer above the top most perforation
open to the Hemlock Zone.
(7) Attached hereto, marked Exhibit "C", (1 through 5), and by
reference made a part hereof, are logs of the proposed injection wells.
(8) The initial injection rate through selected injection wells,
will be approximately 25~000 MCF of gas daily. The injected gas will be gas
produced in association with oil recovered from the Hemlock Zone and/or gas
produced from Shallow Zone gas sands of the Kenai formation. Estimated
pressures necessary to inject this gas are between 5000 psi and 6300 psi.
(9) Applicant plans to install increased injection capacity as
required by the project. The gas injection rate may ultimately be increased
to 75,000 MCF/day.
(10) Tabulations showing oil and water production rates and recent
gas-oil ratios for each of the producing oil and gas wells within the
area encompassed by the proposed project, are attached hereto~ marked
Exhibit "D" and by reference made a part hereof.
(11) The name and address of the Applicant who also is the Operator
of the proposed project is as follows:
Standard Oil Company of California
Western Operations, Inc.
P. O. Box 7-839
Anchorage, Alaska
(12) Ail lands containing wells producing from the Swanson River
Field which are encompassed within the proposed project are under oil and
gas leases subject to the Swanson River or $oldotna Creek Units and operated
under approved Unit Operating Agreements by Applicant.
(13) The proposed injection of gas into the Hemlock Zone through
said injection wells will be consistant with the furtherance of pressure
maintenance in the Swanson River Field.
WHEREFORE~ Applicant respectfully requests that:
Upon the hearing of said application the Comm~:ssion enter an order
a. ) authorizing and permitting Applicant to conduct a project for
the injection of gas into the producing formation called the Hemlock Zone
of the Swanson River Field in furtherance of pressure maintenance, by the
use of such injection wells as Applicant may select, and
b. ) authorizing and permitting AppliCant, consistent with conserva-
tion purposes and in accordance with good oil field practice, to expand
injection operations for pressure maintenance~ in an orderly fashion~
throughout the Swanson River Field.
