February 22, 1980
IT APPEARING THAT:
·
Union Oil Company of California submitted an
application dated January 11, 1980 requesting a modifi-
cation of Conservation Order No. 115, which pertains to
the commingling of production from certain oil pools'~in
the Trading Bay Field. Conservation Order No. 115
amended Rule 3 of Conservation Order No. 93 which
pertains to commingling.
·
Union Oil Company of California is operator of the
Monopod, the drilling and production platform in the
Trading Bay Field and states that there can be no
further drilling in the field since all available
drilling conductors have been used.
·
Approximately 83% of the estimated reserves that can be
recovered from the Monopod have been produced.
·
It is imperative that each wellbore be used to recover
the maximum amount of oil.
·
Many of the wells from the Monopod are dually completed
and increased water and sand production from the wells
has caused holes in the tubing strings because of
erosion.
It has become economically infeasible to work over some
of the wells to repair the tubing leaks.
·
The Trading Bay Field Rules require separate measurement
of production when the "D" and "E" oil pools are com-
mingled although some exceptions to this requirement
have been approved.
·
.
Notice of the application was published in the
Anchorage Daily News on January 15, 1980.
A public hearing was held on January 25, 1980 at the
Municipality of Anchorage Assembly Room, 3500 East
Tudor Road, Anchorage, Alaska. Union Oil Company of
California presented testimony and there were no other
testimonies, statements or protests.
FINDINGS:
·
·
·
The current field rule pertaining to the commingling of
pools in the Trading Bay Field must be amended to maxi-
mize the ultimate recovery from the field.
The commingling of production from the Trading Bay
Middle Kenai "D" Oil Pool, the Trading Bay Middle Kenai
"E" Oil Pool and the Trading Bay Hemlock Oil Pool will
eliminate the need to prematurely abandon wells due to
tubing leaks caused by erosion.
The total production from all commingled pools in each
well can be allocated back to each individual pool
based on past production history and fluid entry surveys
run annually or whenever significant well production
performance variations occur.
CONCLUSION:
The requested modification in the commingling rules for the
Trading Bay Field will prevent waste and the correlative rights
of all operators in the field will be protected.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS ORDERED THAT:
Conservation Orders No. 115 and No. 147 are hereby cancelled.
Rule 3 of Conservation Order No. 93 is amended to read:
Commingling in the borehole of production from the Trading
Bay Middle Kenai "D" Oil Pool, the Trading Bay Middle Kenai
"E" Oil Pool and the Trading Bay Hemlock Oil Pool is per-
mitted. The total production from all pools in each well
shall be allocated so that each pool is credited a share of
the total production. The allocation shall be based upon
past history of production from each pool, production well
tests,, and/or fluid flow surveys run annually or when. total
produced oil volumes change by as much as 25% over any three
months period. The method of production allocation utilized
-2-
for each commingled well shall be reported monthly by noting
on Form 10-405, Monthly Production and Injection Report. All
fluid flow surveys run in a well and the analysis of fluid
entry from individual pools shall be filed with the Commis-
sion by the 20th of the month following the month in which
the surveys were run.

Gentlemen:
Union Oil Company of California, on behalf of itself as Operator, and
Marathon Oil Company, hereby requests Rule 3. Commingling, of Conservation
Order No. 115, dated August 15, 1972, be deleted and the following
modified Rule 3. Commingling be substituted therefore:
"Commingling in the borehole of production from the Trading Bay
Middle Kenai "D" and "E" Oil Pools with the Hemlock Oil Pool is
allowed'. Allocation of production between the "D", "E" and Hemlock
Oil Pools shall be reported monthly on Form 10-405.
The Monopod is in the late stages of its producing life. Approximately
83% of the recoverable reserves have been produced. All available slots
on the platform have been drilled, therefore it is imperative that every
wellbore be used to its maximum potential.
Increased water produCtion has resulted in increased sand production and
additional errosion resulting in holes in the long string of many dual
completions. It has become economically infeasible to pull these
just to repair tubing leaks. This will cause wells to be shut-in or one
zone in a dual completion to be eliminated. This will result in the
loss of production and ultimately in the loss of reserves.
Alaska Oil and ~ Conservation - 2 - f~
Commission
January 11, 1980
The Middle Kenai Oil Pools, D and E and Hemlock zones account for approx-
imately 63% of the ultimate recoverable reserves from the Monopod Platform.
These three zones have produced 33 mm bbls. or 61% of the cumulative
production from the platform. The D and E Pool are defined within the
Lower Tyonek Formation of the Middle Kenai Group whereas the Hemlock
Pool lies within the Lower Kenai Group Hemlock Formation. Strata within
these formations are generally lenticular and often discontinuous. The
Tyonek Formation is typically composed of well indurated to semi-unconsol-
idated, fine to very coarse grained, clean quartzose to clayey, poorly
sorted sandstone and conglomerate interbedded with siltstone, silty
mudstone, bentonite, and coal. The Hemlock Formation is a clayey to
sandy, pebble to boulder conglomerate, interbedded with pebbly sandstone,
minor siltstone and occasional coal.
D Zone oil is 27.6°API gravity with a bubble point of 2502 psig and a
solution GOR of 476 scf/bbl. E Zone oil is 29.8°API gravity with a
bubble point of 2706 psig. Hemlock oil is 31.1°API gravity with a
bubble point of 1622 psig and a solution GOR of 249 scf/bbl. The D zone
is currently under pressure maintenance while the E and Hemlock zones
are not. Based on material balance work, there is an active water
influx in the Hemlock which has succeeded in maintaining reservoir
pressure. Current reservoir pressure in the D zone is approximately
?~2560 psig while the reservoir pressure in the Hemlock is approximately
2100 psig. E zone pressures cannot be determined since all E zone wells
are commingled with the D zone.

Dear Harry:
Enclosed is a revised Application for Modification of subject Rule 3
covering commingling of the Middle Kenai D and E Oil Pools with the
Hemlock Oil Pool, Trading Bay Field. As you pointed out the initial
application requesting modification of Conservation Order 57 was in
error, as Conservation Order 57 was superseded by Conservation Order 93;
Rule 3 of which was further modified by Conservation Order 115.
Your proPosed hearing date of January 25th is agreeable and we will
present testimony in favor of this application at that time. Thank you

Notice of Public Hearing
STATE OF ALASKA
Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission
Conservation File No. 162
Re: The application of Union Oil Company of California, dated
January 11, 1979, for an order modifying Conservation Order
No. 115, dated August 15, 1972, which pertains to the
Trading Bay Field.
Notice is hereby given that Union Oi]. Company of California
has requested the Alaska' Oil and Gas Conservation Commission to
issue an order modifying Conservation Order No. 115, which per-
tains to the commingling of. production from oil pools in the
Trading Bay Field. The operator states that the Trading Bay
Field is in the late stages of its productive life, 'there are no
more conductors available on the Monopod to drill more wells and
that each wellbore must be used to its maximum potential. The
operator further states that without modification there could be
a loss of reserves in the Trading Bay Field.
A public hearing will be held in the Municipality of
Anchorage Assembly Room, 3500 E. Tudor Road, Anchorage, Alaska at
9:00 AM on January 25, 1980. Union Oil Company of California
will present testimony in support of their application' and oral
and written statements will be taken from all interested parties.

INTRODUCTION
In compliance with Conservation Order No. 93, Rule, the Eighteenth
Semiannual P.rogress Report is submitted to the State of Alaska Oil
and Gas Conservation Committee.
GENERAL COMMENT
The Trading Bay Field pressure maintenance project consists of two
distinct water injection operations in the "C" Pool and "D" Pool of
the II-A Fault Block.
The "C" Pool project is into it's eighth year of operations. The
present well count is seven producing wells and two water injection
wells. Cumulative water injection, as of July 1, 1979, is 21,028,797
barrels and cumulative oil production since the beginning of the in-
jection project is 10,769,278 stock tank barrels.
The "D" Pool project is into it's tenth year of water injection. There
are a total of five producing wells and two injection wells. Cumulative
water injectiOn, as of July l, 1979, is 44,389,043 barrels and
cumulative oil production since the beginning of the injection project
is 19,830,555 stock tank barrels.
PROJECT RESULTS AND OPERATIONS
"C" Pool
The two "C" Pool injectors, A-12 and A-29, are injecting a total of
approximately 6900 BWPD. Production response remains good with current
production averaging 2199 BOPD. The primary producers are A-11S, A-14,
A-23S and A-25S. The watercut continues to increase in all producers
.with A-25 currently producing over 94% cut and A-10S producing at an
86% 'cut. All other wells are producing at less than 50% cut with A-11S,
the driest well, producing 2% water. Well A-16S developed a tubing
leak and was shut-in in June. This. well is scheduled to be worked over
in the first half of 1980. Exhibits I, II, and III show pertinent
production and pressure history for the IlCll Pool waterflood.
"D" Pool
The "D" Pool injectors, A-5RD and A-19, are injecting a total of
approximately 8000 BWPD. Current production from five producers is
averaging 2623 BOPD. The watercut 'in the downstructure wells continues
to increase with A-13S making 49% water~ A-llL making 42% water, and A-IOI_
making 59% water. Well A-2S is the driest producer making only 1% water.
Wells A-8S and A-13S currently have tubing leaks and are scheduled to be
worked over this fall. Exhibits IV, V, and VI show pertinent production
and pressure history for the "D" Pool waterflood.
