C. via Regional Oil &t Gas Supervisor Alaska Region United States Geological Survey Box 259 Anchorage, Alaska Dear Sir: Application is herewith made for designation of the Salmon Berry Lake Unit area as an area logically subject to development under a U:riìt Agreement and for determination of the depth of a test well and for approval of the proposed form of Unit Agreement for the proposed Salmon Berry Lake Unit. The proposed SalmonBerry Lake Unit is located approximately 28 miles west by northwest of Glennallen, Alaska, as measured from the center of the proposed unit area. Filed concurrently herewith is a Geologic Report for the proposed SalmonBerry Lake Unit area, which report is marked "Confidential". Said Geologic Report is the basis for unit proponent's request for designation of the Salmon Berry Lake area as a logical unit area. The proposed Salmon Berry Lake Unit is shown on Exhibit "A" attached hereto, and contains 50,043.00 acres, more or less. Ownership of lands within the proposed unit is 100% Federal. There has been no determination of navigability . . The Dire ctor United States Geological Survey Washington 25, D. C. November 21, 1963 as .to the inland water bodies; therefore they are herein presumed to be Federal in' ownership. Acreage is only approximate, as exact acreage of unsurveyed lands is unknown. The above-referenced Exhibit "A" shows the lease ownership of all lands in the proposed Salmon Berry Lake Unit area, with leases identified by Bureau of Land Management serial numbers. These leases are as follows: Anchorage 035073 035074 035075 035076 035591 035604 035610 035611 035612 035613 035840 035841 035846 035859 035962 035963 035964 035966' 035967 035972 035973 035914 035980 035989 035994 036654 038305 038324 038834 053704 A unit plan for the exploration and development of the Salmon Berry Lake Unit area will be prepared and submitted for approval as soon as it is indicated that the proposed unit area as outlined is acceptable for unitization. The Unit Agreement to be submitted will be the 1961 reprint of the standard 'form of Unit Agreement, with the changes proposed in Exhibit "B" hereto. Unit proponent proposes that the test well to be drilled upon said Salmon Berry Lake Unit area be drilled to a sufficient depth to test to the satisfaction of the Supervisor all possible oil and gas reservoirs of Mesozoic age, unless at a lesser depth unitized substances shall have been discovered which can be produced in paying quantities, or the unit operator shall at any time establish to the satisfaction. of the Supervisor that further drilling of said well would be unwarranted or impracticable; provided, however, that the unit operator shall not be required to drill said well below a 'depth of 8500 feet. Unit proponent also requests that the form of Unit Agreement referred to hereinabove, as modified by Exhibit liB" hereto, be approved for use in the proposed Salmon Berry Lake Unit area. Respectfully submitted, SOCONY MOBIL OIL COMPANY, INC. '----. ----,. /J '&: /} ~ r;;;r'-Y .&&¿Yd-- . D1Stri ct Lan . . EXHIBIT "B" TO APPLICA TION FOR DESIGNATION OF SALMON BERRY LAKE UNIT AREA, STATE OF ALASKA The proposed form of unit agreement will be the 1961 reprint of the standard form of unit agreement, with only the following modifications: 1. Added onto the end of Section 9 (Drilling to Discovery) as a new paragraph wil~ be the following: "Notwithstanding anything else in this agreement to the contrary except Section 25 (Unavoidable Delay), the drilling obligations for the first three test wells or until discovery of unitized sub- stances in paying quantities, whichever occurs earlier, shall , be specified in this paragraph. Unit Operator shall be require~ to commence three such test wells as follows: One within six months after approval of the unit agreement, with the understanding that any such well commenced after November 1, 1963 will be accepted, one within two years after approval hereof, and one within three years after approval hereof. Prior to discovery of unitized substances in paying quantities, failure to commence timely drilling will result in automatic termination of this unit agreement as of the first day of the seventh, twenty-fifth, or thirty-seventh month, respectively, following such approval. As to said three wells, the Director may grant reasonable extensions of time, but only in event the Director determines conditions beyond the control of Unit Operator so warrant. In event the first or second " . . well discovers unitized substances in paying quantities, any remaining well of the three shall no ¡onger be due as an exploratory test well, but all unit development after said discovery shall be under an approved plan of development. Upon completion of the three-well obligation or upon discovery of paying unit production, this paragraph shall have no further significance. " I 2. Added as the new penultimate paragraph of Section 14 (Royalty Settlement) will be the following: "1£ liquified petroleum gases obtained from lands or formations not subject to this agreement be injected into the unitized land for the purpose of increasing ultimate re covery, which shaU be in conformance with a plan first approved by the Supervisor, part or all of such liquified petroleum gases may be withdrawn royalty free pursuant to such conditions and formulas as may be prescribed or approved by the Supervisor." 3. Instead of Section 26 (Fair Employment) the following non-discrimination section will be used: NONDISCRIMINA TION. In connection with the performance of work under this agreement, the Operator agrees to comply with aU of the provisions of section 301(1) to (7) inclusive, of Executive Order 10925 as amended (28 F .R.6485). which are hereby mcor- porated by reference in this agreement. Exhibit "B" -2.. . . 4. Added as a new section will be the approved "State Lands" provisions (State of Alaska Form DL..93 June 1960). Exhibit "B" -3- . . CONFIDENTIAL November Zl, 1963 GEOLOGIC REPORT ACCOMPANYING APPLICATION FOR DESIGNATION OF PROPOSED SALMON BERRY LAKE UNIT Twps. 5, 6 & 7 N., Rgs. 5 & 6 w ., and Twp. 6 N. Rge. 4 W., C.R.M., Copper River Basin, Alaska INTRODUCTION The purpose of this report is to present geological evidence in support of the Application for Designation of the Salmon Berry Lake Unit. Attached hereto, as an integral part of this report, are the following eXhibits: Exhibit A Structure Contour Map, based on seismic ~ata showing outline of proposed unit area. Regional Geologic Map, showing geologic and geographic setting. Exhibit B The proposed Salmon Berry Lake Unit is located in the north-central part of the Copper River basin, approximately ZOO miles northeast of Anchorage and the same distance by road north of the port of Valdez. Access to the area , for exploratory drilling can be had by approximately lZ miles of winter snow road east from the Lake Louise road, or by air. STRA TIGRAPHY The Copper River basin is fundamentally a marine Mesozoic province as defined by outcropping formations on the western and eastern flanks. Most of the basin proper including the proposed unit area is covered by Pleistocene and Recent glacial and alluvial deposits. Rocks considered as "basement" in this area are metamorphosed volcanics . . CONFIDENTIAL and sediments which are unattractive for petroleum exploration. On the west they comprise the 'ralkeetna formation of Early Jurassic age and' on the east they are the Permo-Triassic Nikolai greenstone. Granite and undifferentiated Paleozoic meta-sediments constitute the basement on the north. The Jurassic section overlying the Talkeetna formation consists of shale and sandstone of middle and late Jurassic age. The section is correlative, and was probably originally contiguous, with that on the Alaska Peninsula where it has been subdivided into the Naknek, Chinitna and Tuxedni formations. Numerous oil seeps issue from these rocks in the latter area, but none are . known in the Copper River basin. However, the Socony Mobil Research Lab has extracted petroleum from Jurassic shales from the Nelchina area. The Ne1china formation of Early Cretaceous age consists of marine calcarenite and sandstone having good reservoir characteristics. In outcrop on the we~t these sediments are 800-1200 feet thick and may be much thicker in the subsurface. These rocks are considered the most promising objectives for petroleum accumulation in the area. Marine shales of the Matanuska formation of Late Cretaceous age are extensively exposed on the west flank of the basin where they reach a thickness of 8000-10,000 feet. These beds were also found to contain extractable hydro- carbons and are considered excellent source material for oil and gas. . Tertiary nonmarine sediments are but sparsely exposed in this area and are either thin or absent in the area of interest. ~2- . . CONFIDENTIAL STRUCTURE The structure shown on Exhibit A has been mapped exclusively by seismic methods, and the contoured horizon is a seismic "phantom". The proposed unit outline is based on the configuration of the -5200 foot contour. A fault has been interpreted trending northerly across the structure based on erratic dips; however"it does not aííect the total dip closure observed and there is no reason to pre-suppose it would have an effect on oil or gas accumulation. Several angular unconformities have been mapped on the surface within the Mesozoic section. It is impossible therefore to predict accurately the distribution and thickness of the formations in. the subsurface. However, a . refraction seismic line shot 10 miles to the east of the proposed unit identified a high velocity layer thought to be basement at a depth of 7500 feet. Projection along reflection seismic lines brings this layer in the area of the proposed unit at a depth of approximately 8000 feet. Therefore, although it is the intent of Socony Mobil to test the entire favorable Mesozoic section, a depth limit of 8500 feet is proposed to validate the unit. PROPOSAL TO DRILL Tentative location for the initial test well in the proposed unit is near the center of the northwest quarter of the northwest quarter of Sec. 24, T. 6 N., R. 6 W., C.R.M. The well will be drilled to commercial production of oil or gas or to a depth sufficient to explore all possible oil or gas reservoirs in Mesozoic sediments down to the Lower Jurassic Talkeetna formation. or to igneous or metamorphic rock, unless at any time the unit operator shall establish -3- . . CONFIDENTIAL to the satisfaction of the Supervisor that further drilling of said well would be unwarranted or impractical.· However, the operator shall not be required to drill said well below a depth of 8500 feet. It is respectfully requested that all information contained herein be treated as confidential. By -4-
