On further discussion, we do concur that although threads do exist in the hanger it is quite possible that they might not be able to provide the seal desired. In the presented plan, you will have killed the tubing, loaded the annulus and placed a BPV prior to removing the tree. After NU the BOP, the only components that will not be tested are the lower pipe rams and blind rams. Although the sealing ability of the rams will not be tested, the integrity of the BOP body will be verified when the upper rams and annular are tested. Based on the above discussion,Your ram arrangement and proposal to .test the lower pipe rams and blinds after pulling the completion is accepted. Good luck and do not hesitate to call with any questions. Tom Maunder, PE Petroleum Engineer AOGCC "Billingsley, Tim" wrote: Tom, As we discussed on the telephone the morning of 4/26/01, the FMC equipment at King Salmon does allow us to set a BPV in the tubing hanger profile and then screw in a blanking plug in the hanger lifting threads above the BPV. The blanking plug running tool has a left hand thread where once the blanking plug is seated, the running tool can be further turned to the right to release the running tool. This would allow us to test the blind rams and lower pipe rams on the initial rig up of the BOPs. Unocal prefers not to run the blanking plug for two main reasons; 1) The hanger lift threads are of questionable quality and may not hold pressure. In K-13RD's case, the tubing was run in 1983 so considerable time may have deteriorated the threads. We won't know this until the tree is pulled. In any case, it is difficult to screw in a blanking plug with sufficient torque to give pressure integrity, screw off with left hand threads and still be able to recover it after testing blind rams so you can make up the landing joint. 2) Even if the hanger threads are good, there is still an unknown and unmonitorable situation below the blanking plug once it is installed. FMC does not make a two-way check for this equipment, it is a blanking plug. The BPV gives you an added level of protection below the > blanking plug but there is no way to check to see if it is working with the > blanking plug in p/ace. A piece of debris has in the past kept the BPV open I of 3 5/3/01 10:28 AM Re: FW: K-13RD abandon and reddil BOP tests and alltowed two way communication through it. This could allow pressure to become trapped under the blanking plug, with no way to determine that it's there, resulting in a safety hazard. Therefore, even though there is FMC equipment available to test the blind rams and lower pipe rams with the tubing hanger still on seat, Unocal requests permission to wait until after the tubing and tubing hanger has been pulled to test these lower rams with a test plug. This would be safer and more efficient than using a blanking plug screwed into the tubing hanger. Thank you for your consideration and please call with any questions. We are currently running the completion on K~1RD on 4/27/01 and expect about a 1 week leg move. Therefore, the initial BOP test on K-13RD will be probably the weekend of May 5-7. Tim Billingsley Drilling Engineer, Unocal 263-7659 .--Original Message--- From: Billingsley, Tim Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2001 2:55 PM To: Maunder Tom (E.mail) Cc: Byrne, Don S Subject: K-13RD abandond and redrill BOP tests Unocal would like to propose a BOP ram configuration and test procedure for the K-13RD abandonment. As you know, we have had problems with landing joint thread leaks in old tubing hangers and trapped pressure safety concerns under blanking plugs installed in tubing hangers. For K-13RD (which has 4-1/2" tubing), Unocal proposes to install the BOPs as follows: Annular Top of double gate with 4-1/2" pipe rams Bottom of double gate with blind rams Drilling cross Single gate with 2-7/8" x 5" variable bore rams t) The initial test after ND the tree would be a 3000 psi test of the choke manifold, choke and kill valves, 3000 psi test of the annular and a 3000 psi test of the 4-1/2" upper pipe rams only. A cut will be made in the 4-1/2" tubing at 8g00', then pull the 4.1/2" tubing. 2) After the tubing is out of the way, change the 4-1/2" pipe rams to 5" pipe rams for the upcoming drill pipe work, run a test plug into the tubing head, and test the 5" rams, the blind rams and the VBR's to 3000 2 of 3 5/3/01 10:28 AM Re: FW: K-13RD abandon and reddll BOP tests psL This would avoid setting a blanking plug in the old tubing hanger. It is a potential hazard to remove the blanking plug if an air bubble has accumulated under the plug while testing the rams. K. 13RD is a shut-in gas lifted producer. The tubing and 9-5/8"x tbg annulus will be killed with FIW prior to ND the tree. Please let us know if it is acceptable to proceed on the proposed initial BOP test of only the annular and the upper pipe rams with deferring the blind ram and lower ram test until after the tubing is pulled. Thank you for your consideration. The well has been shut-in since 1997 due to high solids production indicating a casing hole has developed at the perforations. Solid fill was tagged at 8954' on 11/18/00. The well has been identified as a candidate for a redrill to the Trading Bay Unit Hemlock Northern Nose feature. The existing Hemlock completion will be abandoned and the redrill will result in a horizontal completion in the Hemlock HB-2 bench to the north of existing King Salmon production. This Application Form 403 covers the preliminary abandonment operations. Based on reservoir pressure data, 8.5 ppg filtered inlet water will be sufficient for use as the abandonment fluid. There will be LCM available if excessive fluid loss to the formation is encountered. The existing 4-1/2" tubing will be cut just above the tag of fill at 8954' and pulled. A 9-5/8" cement retainer at 8900' will be used to abandon the Hemlock zones in the 7" liner at 11688'- 11830'. A variance from 20 AAC 25.112 (c)(1)(D) is requested due to the retainer being more than 500' above the perforations. It would be an economic hardship to attempt to remove the solid-filled tubing. An injectivity test was performed down the tubing on 11/17/00 where approximately 6000 BWPD was able to be injected through the tubing at 430 psi. The abandonment cement should also be able to be pumped through the remaining tubing stub and down into the perforations. The sidetrack operations for K-13RD2 will commence with a whipstock placed on top of the retainer at 8900'. A separate Permit to Drill Application Form 401 will be submitted for the proposed redrill of K-13RD2. As we discussed this morning, we have considered the burst limits of the 13-3/8" casing and the collapse limits of the 9-5/8" casing. We will limit our breakdown and subsequent injection pressure to 2250 psi. Thank you for your consideration and verbal approval to pro- ceed with this method of disposal. Sincerely, C. R. DESCRIBE PROPOSED OR COMPLETED OPERATIONS (Clearly state all pertinent details, and give pertinent dates, including estimated date of starting any proposed work. We propose to dispose the used mud from the subject well by injecting into the 9-5/8" x 13-3/8" annulus. The mud is a KC1 based low solids polymer system at about 10.5#/gal. The volume involved will be about 1000 bbl. The 13-3/8" csg in the subject well consist of 2500' of 61# J-55 rated at 3090 psi burst and 2511' of 68# K-55 rated at 3450 psi burst. The 9-5/8" csg consist of 4560' of 47# N-80 rated at 4750 psi collapse and 6980' of 47# S-95 rated at 7100 psi collapse. The fracture gradient at the 13-3/8" shoe @ 4200 TVD is estimated to be 15.3 ppg equivalent mud weight. With 10.5# mud in the annulus, this results in an estimated fracture pressure of 1050 psi and injection pressure of 1420 psi at the surface. These pressures are substantially lower than the burst rating of the 13-3/8" and the collapse rating of the 9-5/8" casings. A DIL log showed no fresh water sand below the 13-3/8" shoe and no permeable sands within 100'. Considering all the above factors, it should be safe to fracture the formation below t~l~-~~.e~ and inject waste mud into it by pumping into the subject annulus. 16.
