Box 196612, Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6612 MEMORANDUM State of Alaska Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission TO: David Johnston, DATE: Chairman August 16, 1998 THRU: FILE NO: Blair Wondzell, ~ P. I. Supervisor ¢//¢,~fee FROM: Lou Grimaidi,~¢'~ SUBJECT: Petroleum Ins~pector A7RJHPFE.DOC BOP Test, Nabors 28E BPX B1-28L2 Badami Field PTD #98-0132 Sunday, August 16, 1998; I witnessed the weekly BOP test on Nabors rig #28E drilling BPX well B1-28L2 in the Badami Field. I had traveled to location by plane the previous day and arrived to find the crew working on the choke, manifold repairing problems that John Spaulding had found on his previous visit. The test was not started until the following morning. The test went slowly due to a double failure of the Blind ram door seals (both doors). These were replaced and retested "OK". Other failures observed consisted of the Methane detector in the cellar not in calibration, Lower Kelly valve that could not be closed, and the controller for the HCR valve on the mud cross which would hang in a half-actuated position and bleed off the accumulator pressure. All these were repaired and retested before I left the following morning. My past experiences with this rig have been more successful than this tests~"/?~/ results. We should visit this rig more often than our maximum interval as we have// done in the past. ~ SUMMARY: The weekly BOPE test I witnessed on Nabors rig #28E revealed the following; Test time 10 hours, Five Failures. Stuck pipe - UGNU sands, West Sak Sands - differential Coals - stringers throughout well, 4500' to Canning formations at 9500' tvd. Badami sands are overpressured - normally 12.2ppg mw required at TD. Pressure transition begins just above shallowest sand. Shallow sands typically pressured between normal and the 12.2 ppg required in lower sands. Maintain minimum mud weight and utilize latest techniques to manage lost circulation hazards in shallow sands (flow rates, tapered drill stdng). Weight up as wellbore pressures dictate, maintaining a 200 psi overbalance throughout. B 1-28 Producer - Mu[ti-lateral PERMIT Hazards of well control and stuck pipe are managed by setting 7" casing above shallowest sand, before penetrating the full overpressure. THIS WELL REACHED A TOTAL DEPTH (TD) OF 14810'MD, 10738'TVD. SROP = SMOOTHED RATE OF PENETRATION WHILE DRILLING. SGRD = SMOOTHED GAMMA RAY. SGRC = SMOOTHED GAMMA RAY COMBINED. SEXP = SMOOTHED PHASE SHIFT-DERIVED RESISTIVITY (EXTRA SHALLOW SPACING). SESP = SMOOTHED PHASE SHIFT-DERIVED RESISTIVITY (SHALLOW SPACING). SEMP = SMOOTHED PHASE SHIFT-DERIVED RESISTIVITY (MEDIUM SPACING). SEDP = SMOOTHED PHASE SHIFT-DERIVED RESISTIVITY (DEEP SPACING). SFXE = SMOOTHED FORMATION EXPOSURE TIME. $ File Header Service name ............. STSLIB.001 Service Sub Level Name...
