Lonnie Smith Commissioner Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission 3001 Porcupine Drive Anchorage, AK 99501 .~ October 26, 1990 RECEIVED Subject' PBU GC-3C Disposal Well Dear Lonnie' OCT 51 1990 Oil f~ Gas Cons, The following is some backup information requested on the GC-3C disposal well during the October 15 meeting between Floyd Hoffer, Frank Hicks and yourself. Hopefully, this will clarify the status of the well with regard to our variance request. It is our opinion that the well has a "one-way" packer leak. The leak is one-way because fill on the packer seals when pressure is applied from above, but loses its seal when pressure is applied from below the packer. This explains why the well has been able to pass mechanical integrity tests but develops annulus pressure when returned to injection service. Work performed this year tends to confirm our diagnosis. In March, the annulus was pressure tested to 2000 psi for 30 minutes and the pressure held. However, after the :,,:el! was put back on injsction' a slow leak to the annulus was reestablished. Because of the leak, the well was used during the summer for backup service and reserve pit dewatedng. Annular pressure was controlled by bleeding it off on a regular basis. In July, after pressure became more difficult to bleed off, an attempt was made to stop the leak by placing a barite pill on top of the packer. The pill could not be pumped down the 4 1/2" X 7" annulus because the leak sealed and the annulus pressured up. The pill had to be circulated down by taking returns on the 7" X 9 5/8" heat string annulus (see attached wellbore diagram). After a 48 hour shutin period, the well was put back on injection and the leak was reestablished. After the job failed, North Slope personnel recommended, in August, that a rig workover be performed to repair the well and that a variance be requested so the well could stay in service until the workover was performed. The variance was requested in September. Currently, the well is on injection at a Iow rate to avoid freezing problems. A rig However, due to the inherent uncertainty in rig schedules, we have requested a variance through the end of January. We will contact you if our workover plans change or if the condition of the well changes. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Frank Hicks at 564-4853 or myself at 564-4458. L. S. Commission AnChorage Request for Variance to Inject with Packer Leak A packer leak has been detected in well GC-3C. A variance is being requested to allow injection until a rig workover can be performed. The workover, outlined below, is currently scheduled for the first quarter, 1991. Rio Workover Procedure -- 1. Pull 4 1/2 inch tubing. 2. Pull 7 inch glycol heating string. 3. Pull 4 1/2 X 9 5/8 inch packer. 4. Clean out well to top of liner at 5378 feet. 5. Run 7 x 9 5/8 inch packer. 6. Run 7 inch tubing. Note: A glycol heating string will not be run since this well will be freeze protected per standard operating procedures in the future. Box 196612 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6612 (907) 561-5111 Lonnie Smith Commissioner Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission 3001 Porcupine Drive Anchorage, AK 99501 Subject: PBU GC-3C Disposal Well Dear Lonnie: October 26, 1990 RECEIVED The following is some backup information requested on the GC-3C disposal well during the October 15 meeting between Floyd Hoffer, Frank Hicks and yourself. Work performed this year tends'to confirm our diagnosis. In March, the annulus was pressure tested to 2000 psi for 30 minutes and the pressure held. However, after the wel! was put back on injection, a slow leak to the annulus was reestablished. Because of the leak, the well was used during the summer for backup service and reserve pit dewatering. ~' PBU GC-3C Disposal W~. 10/26/90 A rig workover, outlined on the variance request, is scheduled for December. However, due to the inherent uncertainty in rig schedules, we have requested a variance through the end of January. We will contact you if our workover plans change or if the condition of the well changes. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Frank Hicks at 564-4853 or myself at 564-4458. L. S. A FOC at 2200' will be left open to circulate the well with non-freezing fluid. Drill 8 1/2" hole to 5685', change well over to brine~~ and open well bore to 15" by under-reaming. Set 220' liner in hole and gravel pack with sand. Complete well with 7" 23# Soo-95 tubing and production packer set at 4500'±. &' tubing will be equipped to receive a wireline suspended electric pump for water production. Actual open hole completed intervals to be based on logs from Wells GC-3A and GC-3B. PROPOSED DRILLING & COMPLETION PROGRAM WATER SOURCE WELL GC-3C Dry bucket drill 26" hole to 80' below ground level and cement 20" 94# conductor to surface.
