Com+, ~ . ~ - ~, Rnchorage Re: Application for change to Approved Program- Plug back abandonment and change to approved program for CD3-316 (permit no. 207-177) Dear Sir or Madam: ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc. hereby applies for a Sundry for a change to Approved Programs for CD3-316. Drilling operations on CD3-316 began on 1-15-08 with Doyon 19 (permit no. 207-177) and the well was drilled to the planned landing point in the Kuparuk reservoir. The plan was to drill a pilot hole to see if the Kuparuk C sand was present and to help land the intermediate casing in the sand. On 1-22-08, the sand was not found at the planned /' landing point, and additional 8-3/4" hole was drilled to confirm formation tops. It was decided to plug back the existing wellbore with cement, and sidetrack to another location north-east of the original landing location. The Nechelik sand was penetrated and will therefore will be plugged back with cement from TD of 9407' MD to 8907' MD, providing +/-300' MD above the Nechelik reservoir ~' penetration. There will also be a Kick off plug from +/-5850' to 6450' MD with a mud gap between the two cement plugs. The plan is to kick off at 6050' MD. Since the abandonment plug is planned with sufficient volume to cover +/-300' MD above the Nechelik interval, and another plug is planned to kick off from, ConocoPhillips requests that the requirement to tag the bottom abandonment plug is waived (provided / there are no problems during cementing operations). Once the well CD3-316A is kicked off, the 8-3/4" section will be drilled to a new pilot hole bottom hole location. A pilot hole will be drilled to assure the presence of Kuparuk C sand. If Kuparuk sand is encountered, the pilot hole will be plugged back and the well re-landed in the sand (close to the CD3-316A PB1 penetration). Intermediate casing will then be run and cemented in place. The productive interval will then be drilled horizontally. The well, CD3-316A, will be completed as a slotted liner injector. If there is no sand, the plan is to suspend the well until 2009 winter season while the Kuparuk reservoir is re -examined. The 8-3/4" original plugged back hole will maintain the name CD3-316. Once re-drilled, the new sidetracked pilot hole will become CD3-316A PB1 with an API extension -71 and the final wellbore will be called CD3-316A with API extension of -01. Please find attached the information: 1. Form 10-403 APPLICATION FOR sundry approval 2. A proposed plug back and drilling program 3. Proposed plug back schematic 4. Actual rig surveys for CD3-316 5. I did not include this log plot to indicate the Nechelik and the lack of Kuparuk. Could you add this to the package. Sorry it took so long. There was lot of discussion around this and the next plan which lead to the delays. We are currently waiting on weather to cement since it is phase three. F - ` a._ i';'r~~ ~ ~ '~.~ ~I~~eita t<,. : ~~n ~.;.~ ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc. hereby applies for a Permit to Drill an onshore horizontal injector well from the Fiord CD3 drilling pad. The intended spud date for this well is 1/10/2008. It is intended that Doyon Rig 19 be used to drill the well. CD3-316 is intended to be a horizontal Kuparuk C sand injector. A pilot hole, CD3-316PB1, will be drilled through the Kuparuk sand at 45° and continue through the Nechelik sand. The pilot hole will be abandoned with 3 cement plugs. Then the well, CD3-316, will be kicked off at approximately 8,000' MD and landed in the Kuparuk C sand horizontally. After setting 7" intermediate casing, the horizontal section will be drilled and the well completed as slotted liner injector. The well will be flowed back to mitigate formation damage and then be closed in awaiting completion of well work for the well to begin injection. It is expected that both the K2 (Qannik) and the Nanuq sand will be considered a significant hydrocarbon ~ bearing zone. The Nanuq will be cemented 500' above top of the sand. A sonic tool will be run in the production BHA for cement evaluation. A stage tool will be run to cement off the Qannik with 500' of cement above and below the interval. Lead cement will be pumped, then the stage tool will be opened and a second cement job pumped to isolate the Qannik. This will leave a mud gap between the two stages. CD3-115 is the nearest existing well to the CD3-316 plan with 17.8' well to well separation at 574' MD. Drilling Area Risks: There are no high-risk events (e.g. over-pressures zones) anticipated. Lost circulation: Faulting and low reservoir pressure within the Kuparuk reservoir section is considered to be the most likely cause of lost circulation. Standard LCM material and well bore strengthening pills are expected to be effective in dealing with lost circulation. Additional care and attention will be given to the higher potential of inducing a kick when drilling horizontally as opposed to vertically. Good drilling practices will be stressed to minimize the potential of taking swabbed kicks. Annular Pumping Operations: Incidental fluids developed from drilling operations on well CD3-316 will be injected into a permitted annulus on CD3 pad or the class 2 disposal well on CD1 pad. The CD3-316 surface/intermediate casing annulus will be flushed with 300 bbls of fresh water prior to freeze protecting with diesel to 2000' TVD. The significant hydrocarbon zones are the Nanuq, Kuparuk, and the Qannik reservoir. There will be 500' of cement above the top of the Nanuq and Qannik reservoirs. Upon completion of CD3-316 form 10-403, Application for Sundry Operations, will be filed. Annular pumping of fluids occurring due to drilling operations, per regulation 20 AAC 25.080, could then begin once properly permitted. As stated above, any zones containing significant hydrocarbons will be isolated prior to initiating annular pumping. There will be no USDW's open below the shoe or potable/industrial water wells within one mile of the receiving zone. Reference the enclosed directional drilling plan for other formation markers in this well. Surface casing will be set near the base of the Schrader Bluff Formation (C-40). These 450-500' thick shales are part of the Colville Group and are known to provide vertical barriers to fluid flow in other areas. The maximum volume of fluids to be pumped down the annulus of this well will not exceed 35,000 bbl without the specific permission of the AOGCC. Fluid densities will range from diesel to a maximum of 12.0 ppg for drilling fluid wastes. Using 12.0 ppg fluid and the rig's specified maximum pumping pressure of 1,500 psi for annular injection, the maximum pressure at the surface casing shoe is estimated by: Max Shoe Pressure = (12.0 ppg) * (0.052) " (Surf. Shoe TVD) + 1,500 psi _ (12.0 ppg) * (0.052) * (2484') + 1,500 psi = 3050 psi Pore Pressure = 1,086 psi Therefore Differential = 3050 - 1086 = 1964 psi. The internal casing pressure is conservative, since frictional losses while pumping have not been taken into consideration. The surface and intermediate casing strings exposed to the annular pumping operations have sufficient strength by using the 85% collapse and burst ratings listed in the following table: OD Wt (ppf) Grade Range Connection Type Collapse 85% of Collapse Burst 85% of Burst 9-5/8" 40 L-80 3 BTC 9,090 psi 1,717 psi 5,750 psi 2,992 psi 7" 26 L-80 3 BTC-Mod 5,410 psi 4,599 psi 7,240 psi 6,154 psi ORIGINAL ~~ LJ DRILLING FLUID PROGRAM SPUD to 9-5/8"surface casing oint -12 %4' Intermediate hole to 7" casing point - 8 3/" Production Hole Section - 6 1/8" Density 8.8 - 9.6 ppg 9.6 - 9.8 ppg 8.8 ppg PV 10 - 25 10 -15 YP 20 - 60 15 - 25 25 -30 Funnel Viscosity 100 - 200 Initial Gels 4 - 8 10-15 10 minute gels <18 12-20 API Filtrate NC -10 cc / 30 min 4 -12 cc/30 min NA HPHT Fluid Loss at 160 (drilling) 12-14 cc/30 min PH 8.5 - 9.0 9.0 - 10.0 9.0-9.5 KCL 6% Surface Hole: A standard high viscosity fresh water /gel spud mud is recommended for the surface interval. Keep flow line viscosity at ± 200 sec/qt while drilling and running casing. Reduce viscosity prior to cementing. Maintain mud weight < 9.6 ppg by use of solids control system and dilution where necessary. Intermediate Hole Section: The intermediate section will be drilled with fresh water gel /polymer mud system. Ensure good hole cleaning by pumping regular sweeps and maximizing fluid annular velocity. There is potential for lost circulation, particularly after the reservoir is penetrated. Maintain mud weight at or below 9.8 ppg and be prepared to add loss circulation material. Good filter cake quality, hole cleaning and maintenance of low drill solids (by diluting as required) will all be important in maintaining wellbore stability. Production Hole Section The horizontal production interval will be drilled with a M-I Flo-Pro drill-in fluid. The base fluid will consist of 6% KCI, with ± 30PPB calcium carbonate bridging material to minimize formation damage. Flo-Vis Polymer and Dual-Flo starch will be used for viscosity and fluid loss control respectively. .,~t~ ^~GINAL Plug Back Completion Schematic RKB-GL=36.3' 9.8 ppg drilling mud in hol KOP 8,000' Top Kur~aruk Reservoir +/-8773' MD / 6746' TVD Tort Necheiik Reservoi +/-8300' MD / 7118' TV[ Updated 12/12/07 Sperry Sun Directional Plan WP04 Wellhead 16" Conductor to 114' 3" 40 ppf J-80 BTCM Surface Casing 747' MD / 2484' TVD mented to surface Plua #2:600' Kick off alua Too at +/- 7771' MD 17 oaa.
