Gentlemen: In regard to the above referenced regulations, your attention is called to an attached list of wells which, according to our records, have not received a final location inspection and approval of clean up. In compliance with 20 AAC 25.170 Section (a), "Within one year of suspension or abandonment of an on- shore well", ali clean up work is to be finished. Section (b) provides the means for an extension of time if a valid reason exists. Section (c} provides for on site inspection. Consequently, we are presenting the following list of your abandoned and/or suspended wells. Many of these are now more than one ~ar old and are not in compliance with regulations. Others should have the final inspection completed this summer while v~ather permits. This list covers the years 1975 to date. There may be some earlier wells that also need inspec- tion. If you have any earlier wells to be inspected this sun%mcr please inform us. Therefore, we are requesting a schedule from you for this summer when our field inspectors can accompany your representa- tives to these sites for the final clean up inspection. y~ truly, /~ Lonnie C. A spacer spool to allow installation of a 12" mud spool with 4" flanged side outlets at or near ground level will be installed, after which the cellar will be filled in with gravel and a foundation built to accomodate the placement of a sub-base for a trailer- · mounted drilling rig.. 8" relief lines-will be laid from the 4" flanged connec- tions on the mud spool, and a 12" series 900 Hydril will be installed. The drilling equipment will then be moved on location. (All of the above described work will be done with the aid of a crane instead of the drilling rig). Drill pipe will then be run using Otis Pressure Control hydraulic snubbing equipment (if necessary), and an attempt will then be made to locate the top of the 4½" drill pipe which is presently assumed to be inside the 13-3/8" cas- ing. If successful, the loose drill pipe (if any) will be fished, the drill pipe washed over~ pipe with defective connection removed (if any), and the 4-~" drill pipe screwed into, allowing connection of the drill pipe now in the casing back to the surface. After connecting the 4½~' drill pipe to the surface above the blowout preventors, a 4" master valve will be installed on the top of the drill pipe and Otis Pressure Control, Inc., hydraulic snubbing equipment (if necessary) will be used to run small diameter tubing (probably 1.~" integral joint) will be used to wash the bridges of formation out of the drill pipe down to the top of the drill collars at approximately 8,650'. The drill pipe will then be perforated at various intervals beginning at 8,600', and working upward, each set of perforations will be .squeeze cemented before perforating the next successive higher interval for squeezing. If this perforating and squeezing operation is successful, the drill pipe will be cut off 100' below the surface, the mud spool and blowout preventors removed, and a cement plug p~aced in the top of the 13-3/8" casing from 100' below surface up to the surface. A steel plate will then be welded on top of the 13-3/8" casing and a permanent marker.installed. Marathon Oil Company March 3, 1967. He immediately instructed the Driller to shut down the mud pump to check the flow from the well bore. The well flowed back approximately a l" stream of mud. At 4:10 p.m., the mud pump was again put on the hole and pumping. At 4:20 p.m., the pump was again shut down to check the flow. The well was flowing a full stream of mud through the flow line as if the pump were still pumping. This mud was not gas cut at this time. At ~:~5 P.t..m.· , the drill string was raised 35' and the Hydril was closed, shutting the well in. The well was closed in completely.. The mud weight while drilling at 9,134' was lO.8~/gal. While the well was shut in there was 600~ pressure on the mu~ gauge on the standpipe. Raised mud weight of 170 barrels of mud in mud tank from 10.8 to 13.5~/gal. The well~wa~s_s__h~_t__~in____dur~ng this l~_~.od. The drill string was moved through the Hydril at 30-minute intervals while mixing mud, and a s_m_-!l_ amount of mud was pumped through the kelly to keep the mud system from freezing. At 7:00 ~p~.~,_ the 2" adjustable choke was opened wide open to the reserve pit, and at this time, mud was pumped down through the drill string. Dry gas, with no liquid, was flowin$ out of the choke line. Pumped in the 170 barrels of lb. 5~ mud in the hole and only a fine spray of mud showed at the choke line at the end of the pumping period. Flow immediately returned to all gas after the pump was shut down. Closed choke line at choke and pressure on the mud gauge on the standpipe was 200~ while closed in completely. At ~:~0 a.m., February 10, 1967, while mixing mud, the Coastal toolpusher observed gas bubbling through the fluid in the cellar on the rathole side, or east side of the celler. Opened 2" adjustable choke wide ~open at this time and pumped all available mud in pits, which was 400 bbls of 12.5~/gal. mud, into the hole through the drill string. Flow was all gas, with no fluid, at the end of the choke line in the reserve pit during · the pumping period and after the pumps were shut down. At 4:15 a.m.~ all engines were shut down and all rig lights were shut down in the doghouse and generator house. Gas was blowing strongly through the choke line at 4:30 a.m.~, when the choke line blew off at the choke manifold on the downstream side of the manifold. Gas was blowing in the direction of the drill pipe rack and catwalk sections. At this point, personnel abandoned the location. The only equipment drained was the boiler. Between 4:90 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. the choke line parted between the mud spool and the manifold, and gas cut a hole through the beam.on the Sub-base. At 9:00 a.m., gas was flowing strongly out of the nc~th side of the sub-base, directly out the side outlet of the mud spool and through the hole cut in the beam. Checked well again at 4:00 p.m. and was still blowing strongly. Well con- tinued to blow all night with flow rate estimated at 15 to 20 MMCFD and most of the flow being directly out the 2" outlet of the mud spool on the north side of the rig~ although some gas continued to come up through the rig floor. Engine house, rig floor~ and substructure collecting large deposits of silt and hydrates~ but no fluid was apparent. .F. ebruary ll~ 1967 (Saturday) Attempt was made to open the BOP's to divert gas flow up so that personnel could move in close enough to remove some of the winter panels on substructure. Unable to open BOP' s. Hydraulic opening lines from control unit probably broke in cellar. Unable to remove substructure paneling. Flow estimated ~ l0 - 15 MMCFPD with considerable amount of silt and hydrates--no apparent fluid. Lifted heavy mhd manifold into place using rig cat line operated by another Caterpilla~--tractor. Installed mud manifold using pipe tongs and ratchet assembly. Unthawed plug in drill pipe and pumped \ . in approximately 6 bbls of diesel 6il' into drill pipe using Halliburton truck located at location approximately 500' east of well. Wind blowing from northeast. Rigged up Schlumberger 5/16" wireline and d~_m~y gun and installed high-pressure lubricator above kill m~nifold. D~mmy ~n would not go down due to pressure on drill pipe (2700~). February 18~ 1967 (Saturday) Rigged up longer Schlumberger lubricator and ~/16" wireline truck~ installed additional weight bars, and attempted to run d~mmy gun. Pressure on drill pipe (2700#) kicked gmn up hole and parted electric wire line~ dropping weight bars and d~mmy gun in lubricator. Pumped into drill pipe with approximately 180 bbls water and l0 bbls dieseI oil in order to reduce pressure on lubricator to allow gun to fall. Checked shut-down pressure at various times while pumping. Static pressure reduced to zero after pumping approximately l~O bbls of water (approximate capacity of drill pipe). Pump pressure 1700~ 6 BPM after filling drill pipe~ Drill pipe appears to be all together with no leaks in pipe. After pumping entire 190 bbls of fluid~ pressure bled down very slowly to zero over about a 15 - 20-minute period and drill pipe went on vacuum. Well still flowing at ~bout same gas rate as past few days (estim~ted 15 MMCFD) with some silt and sand; hYdrates stopped apparently due to warmer weather, but first noticeable amounts of water had appeared earlier in ~a~before pumping 1967 ANCHORAGE -?- February 18, 1967 (Cont'd) began. The manner in which the pressure on the drill pipe bled down (from 1700 psi pumping pressure to zero) after the pump was shut do~m indicated that the lower zone (9070-9124') had possibly started bridging around the 6~~'' drill collars in the 8~" rat-hole. Rigged up Schlumberger 2~" Jet gun with 24 shots in 6' of expendable gun. Gun failed to go through lubricator~ probably due to the long, limber lubricator and the large number of stiff weight bars above the gun in the lubricator. Shut down for dark. February 19, 1967 (Sunday) Overnight (Saturday night) the well had begun producing huge quantities of formation (sand, silt~ shale, and gravel) and a considerably greater volume of Water. Estimated RO boxcar loads of sediment accumulated on north side of rig, adjacent to the spool outlet where the choke line had originally been located. Also the floor of the rig contained large amounts of these sediments and a flow had started around ~the rotary table, straight up around the kill manifold and Schlumberger wireline lubricator, making it very difficult to work on the rig floor. Total gas volume being produced had reduced to esti- mated 3 - 5 MMCFD and well was heading badly. It was dec~ded that .it would be prudent ~to connect up all kill lines to the kill manifold and attempt to kill the well through the bit nozzles even though the pumping rate would be limited. Connected up Halliburton lines to kill manifold above drill pipe~ tested lines and manifold with diesel oil to 5000~. Opened mauifold valves and was unable to pump into drill pipe at 5000~. Apparently the 8~" hole was bridged both below and above the bit. -8- February 19~ 1967 (Cont'd) While holding 5000~ on the drill pipe, a large flow erupted underneath the derrick floor with sufficient pressure to raise the floor up and knock o~f one of the Halliburton kill lines. This happened almost simultaneously or slightly after the side outlet in the spool below the blowout preventers had plugged and all flow had stopped through that connection. At this time all flow was now ~going straight up through the derrick and the well went completely out of control. The flow contained some gas, large amounts of water, and great volumes of mud and formation (in large chunks). All hopes to pump into the well were abandoned because of the inability to break circulation and the huge upward flow. (The eruption under the floor was believed to have been a result of the 1~-~/8" casing rupturing immediately below the bradenhead or of the pressure breaking around the outside of the 1~-~/8" and RO" casings. This eruption occurred mt about 12 noon on Sunday, February 19th. ) The well continued to flow in this manner overnight, producing huge amounts of water, shale, sand, and coal, with some gas. These sediments were contained to a great degree by diking up around the drilling location with 'the Caterpillar tractors. By 8 o'clock the next morning, Nonday, the sediments were from ~ to 8' high. February 20, 1967 (MondaY) Well bridged at 8:15 A.M. Remained bridged until 12:15 P.E., when it started flowing again, producing increased volumes of water, shale, sand~ coal and varying quantities of gas. At times the flow rose to a height of 50' above the crown of the'derrick. Chunks of shale and coal up to 6 inches in diameter were blown into the air around the location. At about 8:50 P.M. on Monday, February 20th~ the well again bridged. RECEIVED iDtVl3lOikl 0/: MINES & ' ,,'- -9- February 21, 1967 (Tuesday) Well remained bridged all day. Kill manifold laying on derrick floor, top of drill pipe missing. One Joint of drill pipe found sticking up in reserve pit. F~ebruary P-R, 196..7.' (Wednesday) Well remained bridged all day. Derrick still standing. Inspected cellar. Found casinghead, Shaffer blowout preventers, and Hydril laying off to side of cellar. Top of 1~-3/8" casing and 20" casing visible in cellar. Apparently the casing had ruptured allowing flow to start outside of the BOP's and upward, which had cut the bradenhead loose from the casing. No drill pipe visible in casing. Well was only bubbling slightly with water in top of casing. February P-3~ 1967 (Thursday) Well came unbridged and started flowing again at 10:30 A.M., after remaining quiet for approximately 6P- hours. Initial flow was 500' above derrick. Pro- ducing large volumes of sand, shale, and coal dust with water and some gas. Well still flowing at dark and continued to flow overnight. February 24~ 1967 (Friday) (Temperature: -lO°F.) Well bridged off ~ 7:15 A.M., February 24, 1967. Derrick fell between 2:00 and 4:00. A.M., February 24, 1967. Well produced large amounts of sand, shale, coal, and gas with small amount of water. Mound at rig is approximately 25' above ground level. Formation 3' deep at edge of location. Diameter at top of mound is 30'. Hole in top of mound is approximately 10' in diameter and tapers down to about cellar diameter at ground level. Well kicks out formation and small amounts of water occasionally, going 2,]967 Ulvl~4Oiw OF MINES & M~N~P, AI.~i ANCI-IORAGE - l0 - February 24, 1967 (Cont'd) 5 to 30' above mound. Well has small roar but unable to see gas (5:30 P.M.). Some drill pipe blew out of hole before bridging. F. ebruarY 2.5, 1967 (Saturday) Well apparently did not kick during night. Well made one small head at ll:15 A.M.~ producing small amount of water and formation. Water and formation raised approximately 50' into air. Well still making slight roaring sound. Looked into mound. Unable to see into bottom of cellar to inspect top of casing. February 26~ 1967 (Sunday) Well did not kick any fluid or formation out of mound. Still rolling fluid at bottom of cellar. Inspection indicates that rolling fluid is in center of original well bore. Too much fluid to see top of casing. This A.M., observed very small amount of gas coming 'from mound. Fluid rolling with greater activity than prior, to 62-hour bridge-off. Not increasing. Removed several winterization panels from mud tanks at back of rig. Waiting on drag line and will remove more panels Monday, February27th. February 27, 1967 (Monday) Well did not kick during past 24 hours. Well has been bridged off for 82 hours as of 5:15 P.M., 2-27-67. Still rolling fluid in bottom of cellar with same activity as in previoUs 24 hours.. Observed free water on ice in reserve pit at 12:30 P.M., 2-27-67. Inspection indicated that an estimated 2" stream of water is spilling out over mhd tank located on northwest side of rig. Will catch sample for a~alysis. 'R E ~. Form 9-329 (January 1950) 16--25766-9 U.S. GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFT]CE MEMORANDUM TO: I-- Thomas R. Marshall, Jr. State of Alaska DIVISION OF MINES AND MINERALS FROM: DATE : February 16, 1967 SUBJECT: Field Trip Report on Marathon' Beaver Creek #1 Blowout On Wednesday, February 15, 1967, I travelled by PNA to Kenai where I met Mr- Dick Atchison of Marathon Oil Company. Mr. Atchison was acting as coordi- nator and expediter of activities associat~::j with bringing the Beaver Creek #1 under control. As nearly Ss I was able to determine, the following events took place prior to actual loss of control of the well. On Thursday, February 9, while drilling at approximately 9,100 feet, a drilling break was encountered. A short time later the pit level recorder indicated that mud level in the pit was increasing. The Marathon pusher shut down mud pumps to obtain an estimate of the rate of fill. The pumps were shut down ~or approximately ten minutes and the rate of fill started declining. Mud pumps were then restarted, and fill rate started increas- ing more than normal. Mud pump_s were shut down a second time to determine rate of fill and it became obvious that no decrease in rate was occurring. At this point, drill pipe rams were closed with 600 pounds of pressure indicated on drill pipe. Mud weight at this time approximated 10.7 pounds per gallon, and operator started weighting mud. Periodically, gas was bled off through the choke control line until mud reached the surface when the choke control line was closed. This series of events continued until approximately 4 a.m. on February 10. During this time, plans were made and all personnel briefed on procedures and safety measures to be taken if it became necessary to abandon the well. At approximate- ly 4 a.m., a roughneck was instructed to jet the cellar and he reported that gas was escaping through the liquid accumulation. This flow increased rapidly. It became obvious that all control would be lost in a short time; and, as a last resort, the tool pusher pumped approximately 300 barrels of 13 1/2 pound mud down the drill pipe. This was mud which was being mixed to increase the overall weight on the system. No change in rate of escape was noted by pumping down, and no mud returns were observed at the surface. As the flow increased, all equipment was shut down, and personnel evacuated from the location as a safety measure. As of today, operator has, established a staging area approximately 4,000 feet from the well. Equipment on locatlon includes pump trucks, pump units, boilers, mud tanks, bulk mud, welders, bull dozers, trucks, trailers, snowmobiles, and heating units. Connections are being fabricated to permit mixing and storage of from 3000 to 5000 barrels of mud weighing in excess of 14 pounds per gallon. A water line has been laid to the nearby Beaver Creek for water supply and heating units are on location to keep lines thawed out. Temperature this morning was 28° below zero. Mr. "Boots" Hanson and Hr. "Coots" Matthews of the Red Adair Fire Fighters are on location and in charge of preparation to bring the well under control. Mr. Harry Wycoff with Otis Pressure Control, as well as Mr. Merle Walters, Mara- thon Operations Manager from Los Angeles, are on location and helping with opera- tions. Thomas R. Marshall, .Ir. -2- February 16, 1967 Prior to loss of control, operator pulled the Kelley up until a joint of drill pipe extended approximately five feet above~'rotary table at which point he closed the Hydrtl preventer and pipe rams. After well was closed in, the ro- tary hose froze. It is impossible at this point to pump down the drill pipe. It cannot be determined whether or not the Kelley cock is open or operative since the hose is frozen. As a result, plans are for Otis to tap into the drill pipe and set a plug in the drill pipe by freezing fluid to make a two or three foot plug. Once the plug is in place and has been tested, the Kelley will be removed, and a manifold head set into the joint of drill pipe extending above the rig floor. This manifold will have three connections. One 5 1/2" and two 2 7/8" lines are being laid from the remote site to the well site to permit' pumping mud down the drill pipe. When all facilities are in place and adequate volume of heavy mud has been mixed, an attempt will be made to kill the well by pumping mud to the bottom of the hole through the drill pipe. Of course, it is impossible to determine the actual amount of gas escaping at this point. Popular estimates are that between 10 and 15 million cubic feet per day are being blown to the air. All of this gas is being blown out under the rig floor apparently coming from the bleed and fill lines though this can- not be determined until the well is brought under control. Hydrates are visi- ble as the gas hits the atmosphere, and a turbulent cloud rises on each side of the rig. From this cloud the hydrates fall in snow-like flakes to cover the surrounding area with a gray coat. This material resembles dirty snow; however, upon examination and continuous rubbing between the fingers, the ma- terial melts into a water; very fine-grained, cement-like substance. None of the flake-like material is flammable. In the absence of a wind, the clouds rise vertically and dissipate into the atmosphere with the exception of the fl~k~s which fail near.by, Marathon has several gas sniffers on location and check each new area before personnel are allowed to work. These sniffers show no danger outside of the immediate location pad. After discussing in detail the steps taken by Marathon personnel from the time they first encountered this new pay zone until all control was lost, I am convinced they acted in a prudent manner and did everything within their power consistent with logistics problems to keep this well under control. In addition, they are doing everything possible consistent with good safety to regain control of the well. Best estimates are that the initial attempt to ~ .ump mud down the drill pipe will be made late Thursday, February 16, or Friday, the 17th. Inspection time on this trip required four hours and travel time required four- and-a-half hours with no unavoidable delays. OKG / jmd Form No. STATE OF ALASKA OIL AND GAS CONSERVATION COMMITTEE ..
