The data samples are represented as IBM, 32-bit floating point numbers. The tape consists of a 276 byte heading record followed by a series of data records whose length is defined in the heading record. The last data record is followed by two end-of-files. The tapes are 9 track, 800 bits per inch. Heading Record The heading record contains the information necessary to recover the curve data from the data records and some identification information. · 1. The Epilog Computation Center (ECC) number is a unique number assigned at one of the Dresser Computer Centers. Any questions regarding the data should, if possible, include this number. 2. Company name - Well name. These are free format fields used to identify the well. 3. The number of curves (N) is designated as a 16 bit binary integer number. This number must be less than or equal to 20. It gives the number of curves of data that will be in the data records. 4. Curve names. Each curve is designated by a 4 character name. A list of Dresser Atlas standard names is given in the appendix. These names appear in the order in which the data appears in the data record. 5. The starting and ending depth gives the first depth for which there is data on the tape and the last depth respect- ivelY, l~en the starting depth is smaller than the ending depth the data is recorded downward. With field data, the ending depth may be smaller since the data is recorded from the bottom of the well upward. The ending depth may be given as 0 or 99999 when it is not known during record- ing; this occurs on BlT tapes recorded in the field. 6. Level Spacing (L) This field designates the depth increment between the data samples. The data samples are taken at regularly spaced depth increments. 7. Number of samples (F). This field gives the number of samples of each curve recorded in each data record. This number will be less than or equal to 125. i ii i I iiii i i __ iiii DATA RECORDS The samples in the data records are recorded as floating point members (IBM standard). This consists of a sign bit, 7 bit exponent and a 24 bit mantissa normalized to the nearest 4 bits. sign bit. mantissa The exponent is biased by 40~6. Thus, 41100000~6 represents the number 1.0. The data record consists of N . F . 4 bytes of data where N is the number of curves and F is the number of samples of each curve. The first F samples in the record will be of curve 1, the next F samples will be of curve 2, etc. Each record will contain data for F . L feet of data, where L is the level spa.cing. The current standard usage at Dresser data center is Level spacing = L = .5 feet Samples per record = F = 125 Thus each record represents 62.5 feet of data. These numbers are given as an example only, however, since L and F may vary from tape to tape, and will certainly be different for BIT tapes recorded in the field.
