MEMORANDb, State o, Alaska Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission TO: David Johnston~~ DATE: Chairman '~ THRU: Blair Wondzell, .~~ FILE NO: P. I. Supervisor FROM: Jerry Herring, }~)/~ SUBJECT: Petroleum Inspector October 22, 1993 pe9kjqad.doc Perforation Plug Installation AAI, Well :DS18'23 Prudhoe Bay Unit ~'~---' Sunday, October 17, 1993: I traveled to Prudhoe Bay Field to witness a perforation plug on well DS18-23. The plug was being installed in preparation for a redrill of the well. The Plug and Abandonment Report is attached. The previous day, cement was circulated to the top of the perforations and squeezed with a coil tubing rig. The perforations were between 9,030 and 9,040 feet. The cement plug was tagged at 8,425 feet, providing 605 feet of cement fill above the top of the perforations. The plug was next pressure tested with a seawater/methanol solution to 1,200 PSIG at the surface for 15 minutes. The pressure held steady and the plug installation was determined to be acceptable. There was some discussion between myself and Steve Whiddon, ARCO Wireline Supervisor, on the test pressure requirements and whether a post pressure test tag of the plug was truly necessary. Due to the significance of this plug and that a redundant Otis plug was to be set at 8,291 feet for cutting the tubing and circulation purposes, I chose not to make an issue of this. Development of our plugging procedure for this situation is possible to address the required test pressure, duration and tagging procedure for perforation plugs such as this one for a redrill of the hole. Summary: I witnessed the successful installation of a perforation plug on well PBU DS18-23.
