Attention: John DeGrey
Dear John: O~
I have compiled a summary of Anadrill's performance on DS 9-31B CT ST #2 drilled
with Dowell Coil Tubing Unit #2.
SERVICES PROVIDED
Directional, Gamma Ray and Multi-shot were used from the kickoff at 9407' on 20-JUL-
94 to TD at 9763' on 06-AUG-94.
OPERATIONAL STATISTICS
SLIM 1/Gamma Ray pumping hours were 115.50 total and the footage made was 488'
over a total of 21 SLIM tool runs. Of this footage, 57' represents the first attempt to drill
the well before the first plug was set and 75' represents the second attempt to drill the well.
A modified survey tool used exclusively for multi-shot modes was used on this well. This
tool moves the survey package from 13.5' from the bit to 2.3' from the bit. A total of 8
multi-shot runs were performed on this well, with the gamma ray tool being used on 6 bit
runs and the DSS tool being used on 7 bit runs. There was 1 MWD surface equipment
failure, 1 MWD gamma ray failure and 1 MWD battery failure associated with this well.
Bit runs 1-6 represented the first attempt to drill well #9-3lB. The kickoff point was 9410'
with the final TD before plug back being 9467'. The average measured dogleg from the
realtime surveys on bit run #1 was 66.00 deg/100'. This was well ahead of the planned
objective for the well. Numerous attempts were made to get the multi-shot tool down
through the shoe to get a profile of the well. In the end a reaming assembly was used to
clean the hole out. This proved ineffective for when the multi-shot tool was run on bit run
#6 it showed we had re-entered the old well bore with every survey being at 49 deg. This
was far short of the planned objective. The main reason for this was the cement plug that
was set was probably not large enough to sustain the action of the reaming/clean out runs.
The decision to set the plug was based on the surveys provided by the multi-shOt tool.
i~Y 0 7 1996
~.~.,,_a Oi~ & Gas Cons, Commission,
Bit runs 7-9 issued the start of the side track $1 on well $31B. The kickoff depth was at
9416' with the final TD being at 9491'. The downhole orienting sub presented us with
situations that delayed the well from being completed. Once the BHA was near bottom the
MWD tool would not show a change in the tool face readings even though the pumps were
cycled to activate the orienting sub. Indications were the sub was faulty. On bit run #8 a
realtime survey produced an angle of 64 deg on bottom. This angle proved we were not
building enough based on the planned objective. A multi-shot run was performed once 75'
were drilled. The multi-shot surveys indicated that we were not building enough angle. The
well profile showed we would need 88 deg/100' to complete the well. The decision was
made to cement back and to start the second kick off based on the lack of build made.
Bit runs 10-21 issued the start of the side track #2 on well $31B. The kick off depth was at
9407' with the final TD being at 9763'. The first 62' feet of sliding showed we were
building at 50 degtl00'. The multi-shot tool showed we had 73 deg at 9474'. In bit run
$12 an adjustable bent housing motor was used. After 51' was drilled the angle projected to
the bit was between 90-91 degrees. At that point a multi-shot with the gamma ray device
was used to determine the profile of the well. The final survey at the bit showed 89.3
degrees at the bit. The gamma ray data determined the depth was offby 18'. On bit run $15
high operating pressures were the order of the day. The high pumping pressures were
caused by the new coil tubing that replaced the original tubing was a fraction of an inch
smaller and the second reason was the mud started to thicken up. After sea water was
pumped to thin. the mud out the operating pressures dropped 500g to 3700 psi. Bit runs 16-
17 were good MWD runs that produced a final realtime angle of 89.4 deg after drilling
115'. Consistent with these two bit runs were variable ROP rates which suggested
formation changes at the bit and extensive stacking of weight to the bit. Bit run #19 was a
multi-shot run that produced 92.6 deg on bottom. This high angle at the bit coupled with
the large depth correction addition of 16' presented us with situations that delayed the well
from being completed. The final bit run was started at 9720' at an angle of 92.6 deg. The
plan here was to run in the hole with a 1/2 deg adjustable bent housing motor to time ream
the low side of the well to reduce the angle from 92.6 deg to 90 deg. After drilling 43' of
new hole it was determined that the well was side tracked from the drilled portion. The final
depth of the well was 9763' MD (coil tubing measurement).
JOB PERFORMANCE
DIRECTIONAL
A total of 8 multi-shot runs were done on this Well. From these runs 42 surveys were used
by the directional driller to determine the profile of DS 9-3 lB CT ST$2. The multi-shot
data showed good build rates through the sands. The final survey location was:
Survey Depth: 9718'
True Vertical Depth: 9048.7'
Dr: 92.6 deg
Az: 34.2 deg
North: 1431.9'
Target Section: 745.0'
Displace:1675.9' at Az 328.7 deg
FORMATION EVALUATION
Slim 1/Gamma Ray was used on a limited basis on this well. The log represents a section
of the well drilled previously that was logged this _time to try to tie the depth system to some
known reference point. On one multi-shot run the gamma ray log showed that the depth
system was off by 18'. This was when it was compared to the log from the previous
section of the well. Later on in drilling side track #2 the depth was corrected by adding 16'
to the TD-depth. The log provided in this end of well report shows the depth fluctuations
on both runs. The gamma ray data was gathered in three different methods on this well.
Recorded mode, realtime drilling mode and realtime reaming mode were all used to produce
the f'mal log. The sixteen foot depth correction is very evident on the section between 9400'
to 9500'. Here the comparison of the recorded data to the reaming realtime data is very
clear in showing the depth correction. The data was not combined to form one log for one
data is recorded and the other data is realtime.
The limited use of the gamma ray tool was based on the desire to run in the hole with a very
short BHA to complete the well and the difficulty to drill the final part of the well without
stacking weight to the bit. The addition of the gamma ray tool would stiffen up the BHA
and also move the sensor package farther away from the bit. The DSS package was the
BHA of choice on this well.
Enclosed please find a copy of the realtime surveys and multi-shot surveys from side track
#2, a 5" measured depth gamma ray log, a 5" true vertical depth gamma ray log, a 5"
gravity tool face measured depth log and an ASCII f'fle of all of the pertinent drilling data
associated with this well are also included in this package. Data backed up from the first
two attempts are also included in this report. It goes without saying that ANADRILL
appreciates being involved with ARCO ALASKA on these coil tubing jobs. If we can be of
further assistance to you on this well or on future directional drilling coil tubing wells then
please contact me at 349-4511.

Dear Mr. Cawvey:
Enclosed is the approved application for permit to redrill the above
referenced well.
The permit to redrill does not exempt you from obtaining additional
permits required by law from other governmental agencies, and does not
authorize conducting drilling operations until all other required
permitting determinations are made.
Blowout prevention equipment (BOPE) must be tested in accordance with
20 AAC 25 035. Sufficient notice (approximately 24 hours) must be given
to allow a representative of the Commission to witness a test of BOPE
installed prior to drilling new hole. Notice may be given by contacting
the Commission petroleum field inspector on the North Slope pager at
659-3607.
