Under normal operations when the Joy #4 compressor is running, less COVs are produced. Steelhead Platform: A major failure of the gas lift compressor occurred in January. To avoid shutting in wells and harming ultimate recovery, the platform routed sales gas to the wells to serve as lift gas. Normally, excess lift gas is routed to the sales line for shipment to shore. When sales gas is routed to the wells, however, the option of sending the excess "lift/sales" gas to the sales line is precluded. Instead, the excess "lift/sales" gas must be flared. Unocal has since installed electric submersible pumps, which will make a repeat of this problem unlikely. Hope this helps. Please call if you require additional information. I'm not sure if damage occurs in Tyonek gas producers (GGS). We should ask them if the majority of the flared gas is from GGS and if so, are they also damaged by shutin. thanks dan "Camille 0. Taylor" <Cammy_Taylor~a admin.state.ak.us> Carnmy, You asked me to follow-up on the faring that occurred at Steelhead Platform last October, which occurred because the gas lift compressor failed. In order to keep the Steelhead oil wells flowing while the gas lift compressor was being repaired, Unocal diverted a small slipstream volume of sales gas to the lift gas system. The sales gas is pressurized for shipment to shore, so some of this gas can easily be injected downhote. Normally, lift gas is cycled back downhole, with any excess gas reinjected back into the sales line. With the lib gas compressor down, however, there is no means available for the return lift gas to be pressurized for reinjection, whether back downhole or into the sales line. Thus, return lift gas must be routed to flare whenever the lift gas compressor is down. Note that only enough gas is removed from the sales line to serve as lift gas, i.e., most of the Steelhead gas still goes to shore. Consequently, limiting the production of gas from the platform (i.e., shutting in gas wells} would not make sense in terms of minimizing the volume of lift gas flared. The same volume of lift gas would still be needed regardless of how much gas is being produced from the gas wells. Ultimately the best remedy is exactly what Unocal is doing--installing ESPs so that in the future, it will be less dependent en the lift gas system for maintaining oil production. Hope this helps. I also apologize for taking so long with it. I had totally forgotten that I had promised you a reply. David W.
