I spoke to Marty Scheerer on August 08, 1995 about the following events that were
reported for April:
Flow Station 2
04/12/95 Inlet air high DP shutdown T/C 1803
DP means delta pressure. The inlet air sucks air into the machines. If ice builds up in the
screens, they will plug off and shut down the machines. This was a false dp caused by an
instrumentation problem. Someone had to come in and recalibrate the sensor.
04/20/95 Manually depressured 4B, 4C, and 4D for maintenance work.
They shutdown drill site 4 to change out the well divert valves and the low pressure drain
valves on drill site 4. Volume flared was depressurization volume.
04/20/95 Started motor used to spin turbine for water wash on 1804
When they're water washing a compressor, it's not in service. They use fuel gas to start a
starting motor. The production rates are cut back before the turbine is shut down. When
water washing, they spray the turbine blades with water and sometimes detergent to clean
the blades. They loosen soot and deposits that have built up, increasing efficiency.
04/21/95 Ran 1803 in crank mode for water wash
This is the same as the operation on the 20th, just using a little different terminology. Gàs
is used with an air powered motor. When they are water washing the compressor isn't in
service. They use fuel gas to use the starter motor. The rates are cut back before the
turbine is shut down. Crank mode just means that they're using this starter motor to spin
the turbine blades while they wash them with a water and detergent mix to clean the
blades.
Flow Station 3
04/20/95 1806 cranking for wheel space cool down. Turbine maintenance
1806 is the artificial lift compressor. Cranking for wheel space cooldown means that they
are slowly cooling down the machine. If they shut it down too fast, they can bow the
turbine shaft, causing severe damage. The amount of time spent cooling down varies with
ambient temperatures and operators. They check the exhaust temperature to tell when the
equipment is cooled down enough. The inlet air has to be compressed, so they have to
cool the machine down evenly with a starting motor. Wheel space refers to the different
areas between the different stages. Since this is the gas lift compressor, they initially shut
in wells, but start bringing them back on line as the gas lift falls off. This is maintenance
flaring and not production flaring. Wheelspace cooldown is like a boroscope, but they
look at the firing .
e
e
04/20195 1806 suction piping depressured for suction scrubbed valve replacement
This is the vessel before the suction. It has an internal cyclone, which deflects gas to the
side as it travels upward, to knock out liquids. The liquid drain valve may have
malfunctioned. The volume flared was depressurization volume. The scrubber is isolated
from the wheelspace cooldown, so the earlier operation in the day had not impact on the
volume flared in this instance. The liquid outlet valve was leaking, so it was replaced.
04/29195 Water washed 1806
This operation is the same as that mentioned above for Flow Station 2.
CCP
04/08/95 Flare system testing
This is a very common event, required by another state agency.
CGF
04/08/95 Process upset in MI section of facility. MI compressor 1855 shutdown.
Compressor 1856, part of the waste heat recovery system, had a high exhaust pressure.
They had to slow it way down, which upset the L TS (low temperature separation) system.
The MI got a high, high level into the suction scrubber. The first time the MI compressor
went down at 07:05 on a delta fuel oil pressure. They tried to restart it and at 08:30 it
went down on a high, high level. at 09:30 they tried to restart it again but it wouldn't
load.
04/23/95 1812 TIC at CCP shutdown
High vibrations caused the TIC 1812 at CCP to shut down.. CGF has a higher flare
capacity, so it's very common for CCP to send their gas over to CGF to be flared. The
volume flared included shutdown, restart and water wash volumes.
04/27/95 L TS #2 turnaround deinventory gas and liquids (black smoke)
They shut down L TS #2 and added a deflector. The original was a bad design. They
added a 1/2 pipe, to make the gas change course.
04/28/95 Shutdown TIC 1855 for boroscope and water wash
TIC 1855 is the MI compressor. A boroscope was done on the GG, which is the gas
generator turbine that drives the compressor. They introduce a water and detergent mist to
clean the soot and deposits off of the turbine blades. The boroscope is a flexible optical
tool which they ise to look for cracks and flaws on the turbine blades.
e
e
04/29/95 Started TIC 1855
They had a 10 stage cooling error leak on the gas generator, fixed the lube oil leaks, and
fixed the exhaust boot.

Repaired Servo valve tubing on 1802 and
brought unit back on line.
I spoke to John Minier on June 12, 1995 about the following events that were reported for
January:
Flow Station 1
01/19195 TIC 1802 SID due to suction scrubber high level
The gas goes into the suction scrubber before it goes into the compressors, and it drops
out liquid. A liquid slug will overload it and it becomes a safety concern. It had a drain
valve, but if a slug comes in it may not drain fast enough. If the liquid gets through the
scrubber and into the compressor it can do major internal damage. They shut down the
compressor and tried to start a second compressor. It wouldn't start so they had to vent
until they got the situation under control.
Flow Station 2
01/29195 Excessive inlet gas rates
This was an intermittent problem. He suspected an increase in ambient temperature caused
it.
Flow Station 3
01/05195 TIC 1802 aborted starts due to instlmech malfunction
01/06/95
He didn't know what the problem was but said that he'd check into it
----
I spoke to Adrian McCaa on June 20th about this. He said that for some reason the
compressor wouldn't go through the start sequence properly. Ther's a series ofintemal
checks that it does at start-up and if one instrument is out of tolerance, it won't start up.
He didn't know the exact cause but said it was probably something little like a contact or
switch or controller card problem and not much gas was flared.
01/29195
TIC 1802 SID due to servo valve tubing broke
He said servo valve tubing breakage is stress induced and felt certain that it had nothing to
do with the events earlier in the month. 1801 was unable to load due to mechanical
problems with IP discharge valve, so they had to get 1802 back on line.
I spoke to Adrian McCaa further about this.
The servo-valve supplies fuel gas to the compressors. The tubing broke, cutting the fuel
supply. Hence, the compressor wasn't getting enough fuel to operate. The IP discharge
valve controls backpressure on the compressor.

CGF
01/1 1/95
MI compressors 1855 & 1805 shutdown due to master pressure controller
failure
MI is miscible injectant. As the gas is brought into CGF the first vessel is the chiller, then a
low temp. separator. Next the dry gas gets sent to CCP from the top. The bottom is in
liquid stage and goes to a stabilizer where it is heated. The lower product of this phase is
NGL and the top is miscible injectant. Miscible injectant is pressure controlled. It is
compressed for reinjection back into the field. With the MI compressors down, they still
have gas coming off of the stabilizer. their only two choices are to flare it or shut down the
entire facility. If they shut down the facility, fieldwide production rates will drop. 4-16
hours is a reasonable time frame for repairing these compressors. At the flow stations, the
1801 and 1802 compressors (2nd and 3rd stage) S.T.V.I.P. - should be anywhere from IS
minutes to 2 or 3 hours for repairs.
When the CCP shutdown affect the CGF they usually only can cut rates in planned
situations. If it's an unplanned event, the problem is usually fixed by the time the rates
would have been lowered.
CCP
01/28/95
TC 18 I 2 SID due to an eleclinstr malfunction
He didn't know exactly what the problem was and had to check.
I spoke to Adrian McCaa on June 20th about this and he said the 18 I 2 was a high stage
compressor. He checked but couldn't find out any more information about the
instrumentation problem.
