First Determination of Cause:
1. High ambient temperature swings resulted in flaring and required cuts in production. Ambient temperature increased by

3. ARCO was bringing production rates up following State SSSV Testing at Drill Site #15 resulting in high Gas Transit Line
pressure.

Action Taken to Stop Flaring:
1. BPX reduced production rates and shut-in 2 wells equaling 30 mmscfd. ARCO reduced production rates and shut-in 3
wells equaling 80 mmscfd. Wells were shut-in or choked back starting at 02:12 hours.
2. BPX reduced production rates and shut-in 2 wells equaling 40 mmscfd. ARCO reduced production rates and shut-in 3
wells equaling 75 mmscfd. Wells were shut-in or choked back starting at 13:03 hours.
3. BPX reduced production rates and shut-in 4 wells equaling 60 mmscfd. ARCO reduced production rates and shut-in 2
wells equaling 60 mmscfd. Wells were shut-in or choked back starting at 16:12 hours.

1. D-bank 2nd stage flare valve opened during upset conditions.
2. Sk-18 LP compressor shut down because of a problem associated with unstable gas conditions.
3. The Carry Over Prevention System initiated LPS flare valve opening to prevent contactor flooding/TEG carryover when
gas transit line pressure became to low after K-3200 glt compressor was restarted.

1. Flaring was permitted to continue while GC operations personnel attempted to stablize upset conditions.

pressure and discharging to flare.
2. Test conducted determine anomalies related to unusual high pressures in V118 flare relief scrubber. The high
pressures occurred during the GC1 shutdown incident on 3/17/98.

1. Flaring was permitted to continue while GC operations personnel attempted find the cause of the problem. A valve was
found stuck open and was subsequently closed.
2. Flaring was stopped when the 30 minute test was terminated.
